Reduction of occupational exposure to perchloroethylene and trichloroethylene in metal degreasing over the last 30 years: influences of technology innovation and legislation.

Occupational exposure to trichloroethylene (TRIC) and perchloroethylene (PERC) in metal degreasing is analyzed by calculating airborne concentrations for a large set of possible exposure scenarios (Scenario-Based Risk Assessment, SceBRA). Different types of degreasing machines ranging from open-top machines used until the 1980s to closed-loop nonvented machines used since the 1990s are investigated; the scope of the study is Germany. Concentrations are calculated for different kinds of releases (emissions from open baths, leakage, release of contaminated air during loading and unloading) with

Lead exposure in children living in a smelter community in region Lagunera, Mexico.

Industrial growth has created the potential for environmental problems in Mexico, since attention to environmental controls and urban planning has lagged behind the pace of industrialization. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess lead exposure in children aged 6-9 yr attending 3 primary schools and living in the vicinity of the largest smelter complex in Mexico. One of the schools is located 650 m distant from a smelter complex that includes a lead smelter (close school); the second is located 1750 m away from the complex and at the side of a heavy traffic road (intermediate scho

[Lipid peroxidation abnormalities in miners with Reiter's disease and gout].

The paper presents results of investigations designed to study changes in lipid peroxidation and in antioxidant system of miners in different vocational groups with Reiter's disease and gout. It is shown that the condition of the above systems is affected by both diseases as such and occupational conditions of miners. Based on the secured findings it is recommended that treatment of the above patients be supplemented with an antioxidant agent, copherol in particular.

Occupational skin disease from cutting fluids.

Cutting fluids, oils, and coolant are well-known causes of occupational skin diseases. The mission of cutting fluids, their major types, and the cutaneous disorders related with their use are discussed. The relevance and the clinical manifestations of irritant and allergic contact dermatitis secondary to metal working fluids are reviewed.

Trichloroethylene exposure in vapour degreasing and the urinary excretion of N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase.

In order to elucidate the potential nephrotoxicity of low level occupational exposure to trichloroethylene (TRI), urine analysis of the tubular enzyme N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (U-NAG) was included in a cross-sectional study of metal degreasers in central Sweden. Eighty-six percent of 8-h TRI in air measurements were well below 50 mg/m3. Normal levels of NAG were found in morning urine samples from 29 workers compared to a historical reference group. A weak positive correlation (r = 0.48; P < 0.01) was observed between U-NAG activity and the concentration of the TRI metabolite trichloroa

Eosinophil-related respiratory disease in aluminium workers.

We carried out a nested case-control study in an aluminium producing plant, using the results of pre-employment examination to identify workers with an increased risk of developing work-related obstructive respiratory symptoms. Cases (n=49) are those who had become unable to work because of work-related respiratory disease. They were compared with 49 matched controls. Pre-employment eosinophil count was strongly related to the occurrence of work-related obstructive respiratory disease. This finding is interesting in the light of a possible pathogenesis.

Occupational cadmium exposure in jig solderers.

The cadmium body burden, blood and urine cadmium concentrations, and renal function were studied in a group of 53 cadmium solderers. The results showed raised blood and urine cadmium concentrations and raised cadmium body burden in all workers (31) with more than five years exposure, with 27 having urine cadmium concentrations in excess of the proposed biological threshold of 10 nmol/mmol creatinine. Renal tubular dysfunction was found in 17 of the subjects with more than five years exposure and in one this was associated with glomerular dysfunction. These data indicate that cadmium body burde

Evaluating occupational hazards using information known only to employers: a comparative study.

A comparative study was conducted to assess empirically the suspected bias associated with occupational health studies based only on information obtainable from employers' records. Standardised mortality ratios were extracted from five occupational cohorts for which extensive follow up had been conducted and were compared with proportional mortality ratios based on deaths known (KTE) and unknown (UTE) to the employer, and on total deaths. For the five cohorts examined the suspected bias for the cause of death categories all cancer, respiratory cancer, heart disease, and accidents was generally

Renal cadmium overload without nephrotoxicity.

A redundant nickel/cadmium battery worker was investigated for non-specific fatigue after completing five years in the industry. Sensitive techniques for in-vivo organ cadmium measurement showed a moderate accumulation in the liver but a very large concentration in the kidneys. Despite this, overall glomerular and tubular function were not impaired. It was concluded that the mechanism of proteinuria observed in some cadmium workers is obscure and not clearly related to the degree of kidney saturation with cadmium.

Synergistic air pollution and CO2 emission reduction in China's iron and steel industry based on real-time monitoring data.

As the world's largest producer of crude steel, China's iron and steel industry (ISI) is one of the major sources of both air pollutant and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the country. To better track emission patterns and assess the synergistic reduction potential under various policies during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, a high-frequency, smokestack-level and national emission database was developed that covers both air pollutants (i.e., particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx)) and CO2 emissions in the ISI from 2021 to 2023. The results demonstrated a con

Manganese exposure and sleep quality in iron and steel industry workers.

Manganese (Mn) is an essential element crucial for the proper functioning of the human body. However, excessive exposure to manganese can lead to complications, particularly neurotoxicity. Among the health issues associated with exposure to heavy metals, one of the major concerns in the adverse effect on sleep quality. A total of 189 employees from a steel factory were divided into two groups: exposed (149 people) and non-exposed (40 people). Air samples were collected using the NIOSH 7300 method, and blood samples were obtained at the end of each shift. The samples underwent analysis by ICP-O

Long term insight into biodiversity of a smelter wasteland reclaimed with biosolids and by-product lime.

Smelter wastelands containing high amounts of zinc, lead, cadmium, and arsenic constitute a major problem worldwide. Serious hazards for human health and ecosystem functioning are related to a lack of vegetative cover, causing fugitive dust fluxes, runoff and leaching of metals, affecting post-industrial ecosystems, often in heavily populated areas. Previous studies demonstrated the short term effectiveness of assisted phytostabilisation of zinc and lead smelter slags, using biosolids and liming. However, a long term persistence of plant communities introduced for remediation and risk reductio

Advanced oxidation removal of hypophosphite by O3/H2O2 combined with sequential Fe(II) catalytic process.

Elimination of hypophosphite (HP) was studied as an example of nickel plating effluents treatment by O3/H2O2 and sequential Fe(II) catalytic oxidation process. Performance assessment performed with artificial HP solution by varying initial pH and employing various oxidation processes clearly showed that the O3/H2O2─Fe(II) two-step oxidation process possessed the highest removal efficiency when operating under the same conditions. The effects of O3 dosing, H2O2 concentration, Fe(II) addition and Fe(II) feeding time on the removal efficiency of HP were further evaluated in terms of apparent kine
