Emission reduction from diesel engine using fumigation methanol and diesel oxidation catalyst.

This study is aimed to investigate the combined application of fumigation methanol and a diesel oxidation catalyst for reducing emissions of an in-use diesel engine. Experiments were performed on a 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated direct-injection diesel engine operating at a constant speed of 1800 rev/min for five engine loads. The experimental results show that at low engine loads, the brake thermal efficiency decreases with increase in fumigation methanol; but at high loads, it slightly increases with increase in fumigation methanol. The fumigation method results in a significant increase in …

Degradation of Trichloroethylene by Methanol-Grown Cultures of Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b PP358.

A soluble methane monooxygenase-constitutive mutant strain of Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b, strain PP358, was grown with methanol as the carbon source, and the kinetics of trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation were determined. PP358 exhibited high TCE degradation rates under both oxygen- and carbon-limiting conditions. The optimal pseudo first-order rate constant for TCE was comparable to the values measured for cells grown with methane. We found that growth under oxygen-limiting conditions results in increased accumulation of polyhydroxybutyrate, which in turn correlates with higher transfor…

Quantitation of methylated hemoglobin via hydrolysis of methyl esters to yield methanol.

Methyl esters formed by methylation of carboxylic acid groups on hemoglobin can be quantitated via GC/MS negative-ion chemical ionization analysis of the pentafluorobenzoate derivative of the methanol released from the hemoglobin upon base hydrolysis. Although the method requires extensive cleanup of extracting solvents because of the ubiquitous presence of trace levels of methanol, it is possible to quantitate adducted hemoglobin at levels as low as 4 ng per gram of hemoglobin using [13C, 2H3]methyl alcohol as the internal standard. In principle this method can be used in humans as a dosimete…

Methanol to polypropylene: life cycle assessment and a preliminary social impact analysis.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) are currently essential tools for evaluating the sustainability of products and industrial systems. Although LCA is systematically applied today and is considered a stable methodology, supported by material-specific guidelines and rich databases, S-LCA remains immature in certain aspects. In the presented case study, LCA was applied to compare 11 methanol synthesis processes, all based on reverse Water-Gas Shift, but characterized by different sources of CO2 and H2 supply, to identify the most promising. Accordingly, the mode…

Non-Destructive Hydrophobic Engineering of Inverse Catalysts for Methanol Synthesis from CO2.

CO2 hydrogenation to green methanol using renewable hydrogen offers a promising approach for achieving a sustainable carbon cycle. Among various catalyst designs, inverse catalysts have attracted growing interest due to their unique structural advantages. However, the performance of inverse catalysts, such as ZrO2/Cu, is hindered by their hydrophilic nature, while the systematic investigations into their surface wettability remain rare. In this study, we report a non-destructive hydrophobic modification strategy for ZrO2/Cu catalyst through physical mixing with polydivinylbenzene (PDVB). The o…

Single atoms of indium on hafnia enable superior CO2-based methanol synthesis.

Indium-zirconium oxides rank among the most selective and stable catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Yet, despite extensive research, the mechanistic origin of the exceptional role of monoclinic zirconia remains unresolved and continues to set the benchmark in the field. Here we show that monoclinic hafnia, a wide-bandgap oxide rarely explored in catalysis, can outperform this benchmark. Nanostructured indium-hafnium oxides synthesized via flame spray pyrolysis achieve up to 70% higher indium-specific methanol productivity than indium-zirconium oxides, with the largest gains observed …

Promoted Cadmium Catalysts Supported on TiO2 for Efficient CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol.

Among various CO2 utilization strategies, methanol synthesis via hydrogenation has been extensively studied due to its technological maturity and broad downstream applications. However, the development of catalysts that simultaneously provide high activity, selectivity, and cost-effectiveness remains challenging. This work investigates cadmium-based catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, examining the influence of support composition, crystal phase, and metal promotion on catalytic performance. It was found that Cu-promoted cadmium sites supported on TiO2 with a mixed-phase of anatase an…

Unveiling Zeolite-Confined Aromatic-Water Dynamic Interplay in Methanol-to-Olefins Catalysis.

Water-induced structural dynamics of zeolite framework have been extensively explored in binary model systems comprising only water and zeolites. However, under practical zeolite catalytic systems, water coexists with organic guest molecules within the confined microporous environment, giving rise to dynamical and multicomponent host-guest interactions. Combining in situ spectroscopic characterization with theoretical calculations, this study unveils, at the molecular level, the dynamic ternary interplay among zeolite, confined aromatics, and water during SAPO-34-catalyzed methanol-to-olefins …

Dopant-controlled oxygen vacancy dynamics define CO2-to-methanol catalysis on In2O3.

Controlling the intrinsic activity and long-term stability of active sites is essential to advance the formulation of catalysts. The hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol over indium oxide (In2O3) is believed to proceed at oxygen vacancies (VO∙∙) formed in situ. Here, we study how the structural dynamics of c-In2O3 are altered through doping with Sn or Zr, affecting the local structure, catalytic activity, and stability. We find that VO∙∙ sites in Sn-doped c-In2O3 are unreactive towards their replenishment by CO2, leading to catalyst deactivation by the formation of In0 and Sn0. Conversely, VO∙∙ si…

Computational Insights into Selective Water-Methanol Transport in rGO/PSS Composite Films.

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) wrapped with poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) forms a stable hybrid material (rGO/PSS) capable of producing ultrathin films with promising barrier properties for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) applications. These films aim to mitigate methanol crossover, one of the major limitations of DMFC technology. In this work, we investigate the mechanisms underlying the methanol barrier effect of rGO/PSS, while maintaining water permeability. Classical Molecular Dynamics simulations were employed to explore the structural and dynamic properties of rGO/PSS at different polymer …

Dual-site synergy via interfacial engineering for enhanced CO2 electroreduction to methanol.

Electrocatalytic CO2-to-methanol (MeOH) is hindered by the low efficiency of single-site catalysts, primarily due to insufficient local concentration of the key ⁎CO intermediate. This work aims to construct a dual-site catalyst to synergistically boost ⁎CO generation and its subsequent hydrogenation, thereby enhancing methanol production. Herein, a cooperative interface was designed by integrating single atoms Ni (SAs Ni) for CO2-to-CO conversion and amino-functionalized cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc-NH2) for methanol formation on N-doped carbon nanotubes ((SAs Ni + CoPc-NH2)/N-CNT). The dual-si…

Generative Discovery of Alloy Catalysts for Radical-Mediated Methane-to-Methanol Conversion.

Selective oxidation of methane to methanol under mild conditions remains a "holy grail" in chemical manufacturing, constrained not only by the inertness of the C-H bond but also by the difficulty of controlling highly reactive intermediates once methane is activated. Plasma activation provides a nonequilibrium reaction environment in which methyl radicals are generated independently of the catalytic surface, effectively bypassing surface-mediated C-H activation. However, this shifts the bottleneck to subsequent interfacial chemistry, where radical interception, product selectivity, and catalys…

Alcohol dehydrogenase-mediated methanol dissimilation increases carbon efficiency in synthetic autotrophic yeast.

The efficient production of food and biochemicals using microorganisms that utilize single-carbon feedstocks presents a promising approach for advancing a circular bioeconomy. Komagataella phaffii (formerly Pichia pastoris) is a methylotrophic yeast already widely used in industry, making it an attractive host for such applications. Recently, K. phaffii was converted into an autotrophic strain capable of assimilating CO2 into both biomass and secreted organic acids, using energy derived from dissimilation of methanol to CO2. In these strains, methanol oxidation is catalysed by an alcohol oxida…

Chitosan biguanide attenuates methanol poisoning by scavenging formaldehyde and reducing oxidative stress.

Methanol poisoning is a life-threatening condition primarily driven by the accumulation of toxic metabolites such as formaldehyde (FA), formic acid and reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, we evaluated chitosan biguanide (CSBG) as a novel aldehyde scavenger and antioxidant therapy to mitigate methanol toxicity. CSBG showed strong binding affinity for reactive aldehydes and effective reduction in FA-induced cytotoxicity in vitro and in the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) model. In a rodent model of methanol poisoning, CSBG treatment corrected acid-base imbalance and reduced histopatholo…
