The in vitro effect of methylmercuric chloride on superoxide dismutase activity of pig platelets.

Incubation of the suspension of washed pig platelets with methylmercuric chloride (MeHg) caused decrease of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity at the concentrations of MeHg 10(-5)-10(-4) mol/l. We also observed the increase of enzyme activity at low concentrations of MeHg (10(-7)-10(-6) mol/l). MeHg affects the SOD activity similarly to other mercurials which are known to react with sulfhydryl groups, and differentially influence enzymatic systems.

Metabolism of methylmercuric chloride by the gastro-intestinal flora of the rat.

1. The contents of the caecum and small intestine of the rat metabolized methylmercuric chloride in vitro to a volatile product over a period of 3 to 4 days. The bacterial flora of the gut were responsible for the metabolism. 2. in the presence of caecal contents methylmercury was reduced to metallic mercury. 3. The contents of the small intestine metabolized methylmercuric chloride indirectly, as a result of prior synthesis of H2S to a volatile sulphur derivative of methylmercury.

Bell-shaped response of mercury methylation to sulfate loading in urban sewer systems: Implications for source-level control.

Urban sewer systems act as incubators for mercury-methylating (hgcA) microorganisms, yet how sulfate-an abundant and variable sewage constituent-drives this process remains unclear. Here, we combined controlled bioreactor experiments, batch incubations, and genome-resolved metagenomics to demonstrate that Hg methylation potential follows a nonlinear, bell-shaped response to sulfate loading. The MeHg production rate peaked at moderate sulfate concentrations (75-150 mg/L), reaching levels 1.2-5.4 times higher than those observed under low sulfate conditions (6-30 mg/L). This enhancement arose fr

Monomethylmercury Isotopes Reveal a Hidden Biomagnification Pathway in Marine Ecosystems and Their Environmental Implications.

Monomethylmercury (MMHg) is a potent neurotoxin to which humans are exposed via fish consumption. However, the relative importance of planktonic and benthic biomagnification pathways to fish MMHg concentrations in marine food webs is challenging to quantify. Here, we apply compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) of Hg to identify fish MMHg biomagnification pathways across nearshore bay (NB), marine continental shelf (MCS), and pelagic ocean (PO) regions. We observe significant differences in Δ199Hg between MMHg and total mercury (THg), highlighting the limitations of using THg isotopes to re

A review on the distribution and transformation of dimethylmercury in marine environments.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is the major form of mercury (Hg) that poses risks to humans and wildlife. Dimethylmercury (DMHg) is the most toxic organic mercury compound, and it plays an important role in the cycling of MeHg in the ocean. However, there is a lack of systematic review on DMHg in the marine environments. This review was divided into six sections: (i) detection of DMHg in marine environments, (ii) distribution of DMHg in marine environments and its influencing factors, (iii) the exchange fluxes of DMHg at the sea-air interface, (iv) potential formation pathways of DMHg in the ocean, (v)

Thermal fractionation of mercury in environmental matrices: a critical review of direct analyzer techniques.

Understanding the biogeochemical transformations of mercury (Hg) and managing the associated ecological and human health risks require analytical approaches that go beyond total Hg and methylmercury (MeHg) measurements and resolve the forms that control the mobility and bioavailability of this metal. Yet no single speciation technique currently provides a routine, multi-matrix solution suitable for environmental monitoring. This review evaluates temperature-programmed thermal fractionation of Hg, implemented using direct Hg analyzers, as a pragmatic tool to bridge this gap. We summarize the th

Behavioral and physiological toxicity of dietary methylmercury exposure to larval dragonflies.

While ecotoxicology has traditionally focused on impacts to reproduction and mortality, sublethal effects on behavior can also have important consequences that affect toxicity risk. Mercury is a potent neurotoxicant with well-documented effects on vertebrate behavior, although behavioral toxicity to invertebrates is understudied. Over a series of experiments, we assessed how a gradient of dietary methylmercury exposure influenced behavioral and physiological endpoints in dragonfly larvae, a widely used mercury biosentinel. Mercury exposure induced suboptimal behaviors in an artificially ideal

Effects of redox-modified biochar on mercury reduction and methylation on electron transfer in Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA.

Geobacterplays a key role in mercury (Hg) methylation and reduction in rice fields.Biochar boosts microbial electron transfer, but its impact on Hg reduction and methylation remains unclear. This study investigates how oxidative (OBC) and reductive (RBC) biochar influence Hg reduction and methylation by Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA. OBC increased electron donating capacity (EDC) but reduced electron accepting capacity (EAC), while RBC decreased electric resistance. Correlation analysis revealed biochar's electron exchange capacity (EEC) positively correlated with -OH (r = 0.73*), O-CO (r = 0.8

Transformations of aquatic mercury species by the diatom Cyclotella meneghiniana.

Phytoplankton are traditionally viewed as simple bioaccumulators and key entry points for mercury (Hg) into aquatic trophic chain. However the more recent findings suggest that they can function as dynamic biological systems capable of enhancing Hg cycling reactivity and altering its speciation. Nevertheless, the role of phytoplankton species in mercury transformations remains largely overlooked. The present study examined inorganic mercury (Hg(II)) methylation, monomethylmercury (MeHg) demethylation, and the production of dissolved gaseous mercury (Hg(0)) following exposure to sub-nanomolar c

Occurrence and controlling factors of methylmercury in non-contaminated Cambodian rice paddy soils.

Methylmercury (MeHg) can form through the microbial transformation of divalent inorganic mercury (HgII). However, it remains unknown whether the total concentration of HgII is a main controlling factor for this methylation process in paddy soils unaffected by local Hg point sources. Here we study the occurrence and controlling factors for MeHg levels in non-contaminated rice paddy soil in Cambodia using 164 soil and 100 overlying water samples from different provinces in wet and dry seasons. Paddy soils were characterized with respect to particle size classes, nutrients, and biogeochemical par

Incubation Experiments, Observations, and Modeling Highlight the Key Role of Dimethylmercury on Seawater Methylmercury Distributions.

The origin of the bioaccumulative neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg) in the ocean remains elusive. The current paradigm suggests that the microbial methylation of inorganic Hg within the oceanic water column produces monomethylmercury (MMHg) and potentially dimethylmercury (DMHg). Reaction rates and main drivers governing MeHg levels (sum of MMHg and DMHg) are poorly constrained. We conducted ambient Hg species measurements and enriched isotopic tracer experiments in waters of two contrasting marine environments: the oligotrophic Mediterranean Sea (MED) and the mesotrophic Atlantic Ocean (ATL). Structural and functional shifts of mercury methylating microorganisms during an exceptional drought can elevate ecosystem risk of nearshore area.

Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant and its transformation to the highly toxic methylmercury (MeHg) is mediated by anaerobic microbes carrying hgcA gene, which can affect human health risk through fish consumption. The Pearl River Estuary in southern China is productive but suffers from increasing anthropogenic stresses. However, it remains poorly known regarding the environmental response of hgcA+ microorganisms to climatic variations. We demonstrated that saltwater intrusion driven by prolonged drought led to elevated sedimentary MeHg concentrations, particularly in the nearshore zone, compar

Total mercury and selenium levels in commercial shrimp along the Pacific coast of Mexico.

The present study analyzed the content of total mercury (THg) and selenium (Se) in the muscle of shrimp collected from local markets in the 11 Pacific coastal states of Mexico. Methylmercury (MeHg) concentration, Se:Hg ratio, health benefits value from selenium consumption (HBVSe) and the permissible weekly consumption were estimated to assess the health risk to consumers. All THg and Se concentrations were below the maximum permissible limits. All hazard quotient (HQ) values were <1, however in Hermosillo, Culiacán and Guadalajara, the Se:Hg ratio and HBVSe were <1 and negative, due to the lo

Methylmercury neurotoxicity: Beyond the neurocentric view.

Mercury is a highly toxic metal widely used in human activities worldwide, therefore considered a global public health problem. Many cases of mercury intoxication have occurred in history and represent a huge challenge nowadays. Of particular importance is its methylated form, methylmercury (MeHg). This mercurial species induces damage to several organs in the human body, especially to the central nervous system. Neurological impairments such as executive, memory, motor and visual deficits are associated with MeHg neurotoxicity. Molecular mechanisms involved in MeHg-induced neurotoxicity inclu

Genomic and transcriptomic characterization of methylmercury detoxification in a deep ocean Alteromonas mediterranea ISS312.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is one of the most worrisome pollutants in marine systems. MeHg detoxification is mediated by merB and merA genes, responsible for the demethylation of MeHg and the reduction of inorganic mercury, respectively. Little is known about the biological capacity to detoxify this compound in marine environments, and even less the bacterial transcriptional changes during MeHg detoxification. This study provides the genomic and transcriptomic characterization of the deep ocean bacteria Alteromonas mediterranea ISS312 with capacity for MeHg degradation. Its genome sequence revealed

New Insights into MeHg Accumulation in Rice (Oryza sativa L.): Evidence from Cysteine.

The intake of methylmercury (MeHg)-contaminated rice poses immense health risks to rice consumers. However, the mechanisms of MeHg accumulation in rice plants are not entirely understood. The knowledge that the MeHg-Cysteine complex was dominant in polished rice proposed a hypothesis of co-transportation of MeHg and cysteine inside rice plants. This study was therefore designed to explore the MeHg accumulation processes in rice plants by investigating biogeochemical associations between MeHg and amino acids. Rice plants and underlying soils were collected from different Hg-contaminated sites i

Application of diffusive gradient in thin films probes to monitor trace levels of labile methylmercury in freshwaters.

This study aimed to optimize the methods for sampling and analyzing methylmercury (MeHg) concentrated within diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) and its application to different water bodies. We explored the elution solution for MeHg, comprised of 1.13 mM thiourea and 0.1M HCl, optimizing its volume to 50 mL. In addition, we found that it is necessary to analyze the entire extraction solution after adjusting its pH, to ensure completion of the ethylation reaction. The DGT samplers were deployed in two distinct aquatic environments (i.e., Okjeong Lake and Nakdong River) for up to 6 weeks, a

Anaerobic fermentation of straw with sulfate addition: A suitable approach for straw utilization in mercury-contaminated areas.

Returning raw straw to the soil can significantly elevate soil methylmercury (MeHg) and crop mercury (Hg) levels, underscoring the need to investigate safer approaches to straw utilization in mercury-contaminated regions. In this study, rice straw underwent anaerobic fermentation with the addition of sulfate, and the resulting fermentation products were utilized in a pot experiment involving water spinach to assess the impact of anaerobically fermented straw return on soil Hg methylation and its bioaccumulation. Findings revealed that the addition of sulfate during straw fermentation markedly

Methylmercury induces ectopic expression of complement components and apoptotic cell death in the retina of the zebrafish embryo.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a well-known neurotoxin of humans and wildlife. Visual impairments, including blindness, are frequently present in human patients with MeHg poisoning and in affected animals. It is widely assumed that MeHg-induced damage to the visual cortex is the sole or primary cause of vision loss. MeHg has been shown to accumulate in the outer segments of photoreceptor cells, and to alter the thickness of the inner nuclear layer of the fish retina. However, it is unclear whether the bioaccumulated MeHg has direct deleterious effects on the retina. Herein we report that the genes en

Baseline monitoring of contaminant concentrations in American lobster (Homarus americanus) tissues from coastal Northumberland Strait, Nova Scotia, Canada.

A baseline survey was conducted in 2018 to characterize contaminants in American lobsters, Homarus americanus in the Northumberland Strait, Canada. Sampling included three age classes of lobsters at sites 4, 20, and 70 km from the Boat Harbour estuary, a historically contaminated site set to undergo remediation. Lobster tissues were measured for metal(loids), methylmercury, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-furans. Contaminant concentrations were generally below the guidelines set by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the En
