Qualitative and quantitative bone features were determined in nondecalcified and decalcified bone from 20 predetermined bone sites in each of 44 patients who died with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), some of which received bisphosphonate treatment (BP) in addition to androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT). BACKGROUND: The U.S. Navy's casualty-receiving ships provide remote damage control resuscitation platforms to treat injured combatants deployed afloat and ashore. We report a significant mass casualty incident aboard the USS Bataan, and the most warm fresh whole blood (WFWB) transfused at sea for traumatic hemorrhagic shock since the Vietnam War.
METHODS: Casualty-receiving ships have robust medical capabilities, including a frozen blood bank with packed red blood cells (pRBC) and fresh frozen plasma (FFP). The blood supply can be augmented with WFWB collected from a "walking blood bank."

Recently, we found that the translocation of inhaled nanoparticles from the air space to secondary organs is age dependent and substantially greater in neonates than in adults (J Respir Crit Care Med 177: A48, 2008). One reason for this difference might be age-dependent differences in alveolar barrier integrity. Intradiploic epidermoid cyst of the skull is a rare clinical entity that can exceptionally grow to a large size with intracranial extension. The authors report the case of a 38-year-old man with a giant epidermoid cyst of the parietal bone with extra and intracranial extension, presenting with focal neurological symptoms. Melioidosis is an uncommon infection caused by a Gram-negative bacillus, Pseudomonas pseudomallei. Only a few case reports of orthopaedic infection have been published in English, and most were of isolated septic arthritis or secondary to melioidosis of another organ. We have reviewed ten patients with localised melioidotic osteomyelitis; six had underlying conditions. We discuss the importance of obtaining a bacteriological diagnosis, and of surgical debridement as well as appropriate antibiotic therapy.

Acrylates and methacrylates are industrial chemicals with insufficiently known irritating and allergenic effects. In this paper, the simple monoacrylates and monomethacrylates are considered. Methyl acrylate is an irritant, giving a reaction in 10 out of 30 patients, when tested at 20 p. 100 in olive oil. It is also an allergen (2 out of 22 cases). Because of its irritating properties, the concentration of 2 p. 100 is proposed for allergeric investigations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the transverse strength of denture base resin repaired with autopolymerizing resin and metal wire using a metal conditioner, along with the synergistic effect of a surface preparation for denture base resin. It was found that the use of Co-Cr-Ni wires air abraded with 50 microm alumina, followed by treatment with a metal conditioner and dichloromethane for denture base resin, was the most effective method for repairing fractured denture base resin.
