Coordinated human-exoskeleton locomotion emerges from regulating virtual energy.

Lower-limb exoskeletons have demonstrated great potential for gait rehabilitation in individuals with motor impairments; however, maintaining human-exoskeleton coordination remains a challenge. The coordination problem, referred to as any mismatch or asynchrony between the user's intended trajectories and exoskeleton desired trajectories, leads to sub-optimal gait performance, particularly for individuals with residual motor ability. Here, we investigate the virtual energy regulator (VER)'s ability to generate coordinated locomotion in lower limb exoskeleton. Contribution: (1) In this paper, w

Association between cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic health metrics and long-term cardiovascular risk: Findings from the Chinese Multi-provincial Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The American Heart Association (AHA) introduced the concept of cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) health and stage, reflecting the interaction among metabolism, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and the cardiovascular system. However, the association between CKM stage and the long-term risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) has not been validated. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term CVD risk associated with CKM health metrics and CKM stage using data from a population-based cohort study. METHODS: In total, 5293 CVD-free participants were followed up to around 13 years in the C

The Association of Linear Energy Transfer and Dose With Radiation Necrosis After Pencil Beam Scanning Proton Therapy in Pediatric Posterior Fossa Tumors.

PURPOSE: Proton therapy is the preferred treatment modality for most pediatric central nervous system tumors. The risk of radiation necrosis may be increased at the distal end of the beam because of an increase in linear energy transfer (LET) and relative biological effectiveness (RBE) dose. We report on the association of LET and dose with radiation necrosis after pencil beam scanning proton therapy in pediatric posterior fossa tumors using a case-control framework. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2019 to 2022, 33 patients less than or equal to 18 years of age treated with first-line proton ther

Residential proximity to unconventional oil and gas development and birth defects in Ohio.

BACKGROUND: Chemicals used or emitted by unconventional oil and gas development (UOGD) include reproductive/developmental toxicants. Associations between UOGD and certain birth defects were reported in a few studies, with none conducted in Ohio, which experienced a thirty-fold increase in natural gas production between 2010 and 2020. METHODS: We conducted a registry-based cohort study of 965,236 live births in Ohio from 2010 to 2017. Birth defects were identified in 4653 individuals using state birth records and a state surveillance system. We assigned UOGD exposure based on maternal resident

Quantitative bone scan imaging using BSI and BUV: an approach to evaluate ARONJ early.

OBJECTIVE: The usefulness of bone scan index (BSI), a quantitative metric of the area of uptake in computer-aided diagnosis in bone scintigraphy, has been reported for the diagnosis of anti-resorptive-agent-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (ARONJ). The aim of this study is to validate the diagnostic ability of BSI for the early detection of ARONJ. In addition, the Bone uptake value (BUV), another quantitative index obtained from bone scintigraphy that indicates the degree of radioisotope (RI) accumulation, was used to improve the diagnostic ability for early detection of ARONJ. METHODS: A tot

Wearable hand exoskeletons for motor rehabilitation: a scoping review.

This scoping review maps the current development landscape of wearable hand exoskeletons for motor rehabilitation, covering publications from 2010 to October 2025 across four major databases. A total of 134 articles were included, identifying 116 unique devices validated with human subjects. The results show a clear predominance of soft structures over rigid or hybrid ones, with electric motors and tendon-driven mechanisms being the most frequent actuation and transmission choices. However, there is a lack of uniformity in the information on device metrics, such as total weight and system dime

Metric characters of the hard palate and their cephalometric correlations in Namibian !Kung San and Kenyan tribes.

The metric characters of the head and hard palate of 138 black males from Kenya and 110 male !Kung San from Namibia have for the first time been compared to describe the black and Khoisan variation with respect to these special trait systems. The palate measurements were taken from prints of self-hardening plastic. Nearly all metric characters show significant differences between the two populations, which are reflected in a relevant discriminant function. The analyses of correlations between the individual head and palate measurements yield different correlation patterns in the two samples al

An uncertainty-incorporated method for fast beam angle selection in intensity-modulated proton therapy.

AIM: We propose a novel metric called ψ - score to rank the Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT) beams in the order of their optimality and robustness. The beams ranked based on this metric were accordingly chosen for IMPT optimization. The objective of this work is to study the effectiveness of the proposed method in various clinical cases. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We have used Pinnacle TPS (Philips Medical System V 16.2) for performing the optimization. To validate our approach, we have applied it in four clinical cases: Lung, Pancreas, Prostate+Node and Prostate. Basically, for all clin

Attenuation of noise correlations in the transformation from the frontal eye field to movement.

Correlated activity between neurons can cause variability in behavior across trials, as trial-by-trial cofluctuations can propagate downstream through the motor system. The extent to which correlated activity affects behavior depends on the properties of the translation of the population activity into movement. A major hurdle in studying the effects of noise correlations on behavior is that in many cases this translation is unknown. Previous research has overcome this by using models that make strong assumptions about the coding of motor variables. We developed a novel method that estimates th

Exploring the relationship between urban flood risk and resilience at a high-resolution grid cell scale.

The assessment of flood risk and resilience has become increasingly important in recent years for effective urban flood management. While flood resilience and risk are two distinct concepts with unique assessment metrics, there is lack of quantitative analysis and understanding of the relationship between them. This study aims to investigate this relationship at the grid cell level in urban areas. To assess flood resilience for high-resolution grid cells, this study proposes a performance-based flood resilience metric, which is calculated using the system performance curve based on flood durat

Real-time lane detection model based on non bottleneck skip residual connections and attention pyramids.

The security of car driving is of interest due to the growing number of motor vehicles and frequent occurrence of road traffic accidents, and the combination of advanced driving assistance system (ADAS) and vehicle-road cooperation can prevent more than 90% of traffic accidents. Lane detection, as a vital part of ADAS, has poor real-time performance and accuracy in multiple scenarios, such as road damage, light changes, and traffic jams. Moreover, the sparse pixels of lane lines on the road pose a tremendous challenge to the task of lane line detection. In this study, we propose a model that f

A Buprenorphine Retention Report to Measure Opioid Use Disorder Care Metrics and Guide Outreach.

BACKGROUND: As opioid overdose rates remain high, systems-level tools are needed to monitor and improve the quality of care for opioid use disorder treatment. Although retention in care is a commonly used metric, the concept is variably defined in the literature, and clinics may not have real-time access to their own retention data. METHODS: We designed a Structured Query Language (SQL)-based reporting tool to provide real-time and summative metrics related to buprenorphine retention. A retrospective observational design is used to characterize the summative metrics for an urban network of co

Measuring Psoriasis Severity at Home.

Psoriasis plaque severity metrics, such as induration (thickness), erythema (redness), and desquamation (scaliness), are associated with the subsequent development of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) among cutaneous-only psoriasis patients (patients with skin or nail psoriasis but no psoriatic arthritis). These metrics can be used for PsA screening. However, a key challenge in PsA screening is to optimize accessibility and minimize costs for patients, while also reducing the burden on healthcare systems. Therefore, an ideal screening tool consists of questions that patients can answer without a physi

Inflammatory cytokine response and reduced heart rate variability in newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether systemic inflammation-modulating cytokine expression is related to heart rate variability (HRV) in newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). STUDY DESIGN: The data from 30 newborns with HIE were analyzed. Cytokine levels (IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-13, IL-1β, TNF-α, IFN-λ) were measured either at 24 h of cooling (n=5), 72 h of cooling (n=4) or at both timepoints (n=21). The following HRV metrics were quantified in the time domain: alpha_S, alpha_L, root mean square (RMS) at short time scales (RMS_S), RMS at long time scales (RMS_L), while low-

Delta Features From Ambient Sensor Data are Good Predictors of Change in Functional Health.

Sensor systems can be deployed in the homes of older adults living alone for functional health assessments. Their information is very useful for health care specialists. The problem lies in developing person independent models while facing a large variability in behavior. We address this problem by, first, proposing a new feature extraction method for data from ambient motion sensors. The method uses functional similarities between houses and daily structure to extract meaningful features. Second, we propose a change-based approach for analyzing data, taking difference scores of both the senso

Application of diffusional kurtosis imaging to detect occult brain damage in multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica (NMO) are two common types of inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. Early distinction of NMO from MS is crucial but quite challenging. In this study, 13 NMO spectrum disorder patients (Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) of 3.0 ± 1.7, ranging from 2 to 6.5; disease duration of 5.3 ± 4.7 years), 17 relapsing-remitting MS patients (EDSS of 2.6 ± 1.4, ranging from 1 to 5.5; disease duration of 7.9 ± 7.8 years) and 18 healthy volunteers were recruited. Diffusional kurtosis imaging was employed to discriminate NMO and
