Identifying potential programs and platforms to deliver multiple micronutrient interventions.

This article reviews the potential of four broad types of platforms, health, agriculture, market-based, and social protection programs, to deliver multiple micronutrient (MMN) interventions (supplementation, fortification, and dietary modification). We assessed the platforms' potential based on seven performance criteria related to programs within these platforms: 1) targeting, 2) efficacy of interventions, 3) quality of implementation, 4) utilization, 5) impact, 6) coverage, and 7) sustainability. We highlight one type of program per platform to illustrate strengths and weaknesses for deliver

Micronutrient intake and risk of colon and rectal cancer in a Danish cohort.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrients may protect against colorectal cancer. Especially folate has been considered potentially preventive. However, studies on folate and colorectal cancer have found contradicting results; dietary folate seems preventive, whereas folic acid in supplements and fortification may increase the risk. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between intake of vitamins C, E, folate and beta-carotene and colorectal cancer risk, focusing on possibly different effects of dietary, supplemental and total intake, and on potential effect modification by lifestyle factors. DESIGN: In a …

Micronutrient deficiencies and anemia among preschool children in rural Vietnam.

The prevalence of trace elements deficiencies, vitamin A deficiency, anemia, and their relationships were investigated in a cross sectional study involving 243 children aged from 12 to 72 months in rural Vietnam. Serum levels of copper, zinc, selenium and magnesium were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer and that of retinol by high performance liquid chromatography. Hemoglobin concentration in whole blood was measured by the cyanmethemoglobin method. The prevalence of deficiencies in zinc, selenium, magnesium, and copper was 86.9%, 62.3%, 51.9%, and 1.7%, respectively.

Multiple micronutrient deficiencies persist during early childhood in Mongolia.

Data on the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in children in Mongolia is limited. We therefore determined the prevalence of anaemia, iron deficiency anaemia (IDA), and deficiencies of iron, folate, vitamin A, zinc, selenium, and vitamin D among young Mongolian children. Anthropometry and non-fasting morning blood samples were collected from 243 children aged 6-36 months from 4 districts in Ulaanbaatar and 4 rural capitols for haemoglobin (Hb), serum ferritin, folate, retinol, zinc, selenium, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) assays. Children with alpha-1-glycoprotein >1.2mg/L (n=27) indi

Blood iron, glutathione, and micronutrient levels and the risk of oral cancer.

The risk of oral cavity cancer was determined in relation to serological levels of iron; vitamins A, B2, C, E; zinc; thiamin; and glutathione (GSH). The study included 65 hospitalized patients with oral cancer and 85 matched controls. In comparing the highest to the lowest tertiles, the risk was odds ratio (OR) = 0.3 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.1-0.6] for iron; 3.2 (95% CI = 1.3-8.1) for total iron binding capacity (TIBC), which measures the concentration of the iron delivery protein transferrin; and 0.4 (95% CI = 0.2-0.9) for transferrin saturation (iron/TIBC x 100). These associations

[Application and significance of fortification in prevention of micronutrient deficiency-induced diseases].

Fortification is defined as adding of one or more essential elements to food article, regardless of whether it has been already added to foo … ented and eliminated by means of appropriate and diverse nutrition and supplementation of deficient micronutrients, but on the national level, food fortification is the best solution. Two basic conditions for the application of fortification are the following: that the food article is in wide use and that it is cheap (available). The purpose of our paper was to …

Empowering a tea-plantation community to improve its micronutrient health.

This project was designed to convince and empower management and plantation workers to improve their own nutritional health status and productivity. Plantations are generally bypassed by the government's primary health-care system. A nine-month intervention with iron (60 mg of elemental iron) and vitamin A supplementation and iodized salt was performed on the Balanoor Plantations in India. Of the women tea pickers, 99% (n = 334) received the supplements and bought the iodized salt from the plantation ration shop. Their mean hemoglobin level rose significantly from 11.0 to 11.9 g/dl. The women

Micronutrient status and glutathione peroxidase in bedridden patients on tube feeding.

Deficiency of micronutrients, especially selenium, is common in critically ill patients. We investigated the micronutrient status (selenium, zinc, copper and manganese) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in 30 tube-fed patients and 21 hospitalized non-tube-fed control patients. Serum levels of selenium, copper and manganese in tube-fed patients were significantly lower than in control patients (selenium: 4.85+/-1.38 microg/dl versus 8.67+/-1.45 pg/dl; copper: 44.7+/-36.9 microg/dl versus 92.1+/-21.2 microg/dl; manganese 0.59+/-0.41 microg/dl versus 1.52+/-0.59 microg/dl). Developing industrial-governmental-academic partnerships to address micronutrient malnutrition.

Micronutrient malnutrition affects approximately 2 billion people and has a significant impact on mortality, morbidity, reproductive health, individual growth and development, and economic productivity. The World Bank has suggested that micronutrient interventions are among the most cost-effective of all health interventions. Therefore, greatly increased collaborative efforts are needed to bring about further reductions in micronutrient malnutrition. At the FAO/WHO International Conference on Nutrition, the importance of various partners in improving nutrition was recognized in the World Decla

Maternal multiple micronutrient supplementation in rural Pakistan increased some milk micronutrient concentrations, but not infant growth, at three-months postpartum: a randomized controlled trial substudy.

BACKGROUND: In Pakistan, maternal micronutrient deficiencies are highly prevalent, and stunting affects 43% of infants by 6-mo postpartum. Human milk composition for some micronutrients can be negatively affected by suboptimal maternal nutrition; however, it is unknown whether this affects infant growth. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine whether mothers receiving multiple micronutrient supplements (MMSs) compared with standard of care had 1) greater concentrations of iodine, vitamins A, E, and B12, and folate in their milk at 3-mo postpartum; and 2) improved growth of their offspring. Associa…

Phenotypic and molecular analysis of seabuckthorn accessions reveal promising genotypes and candidate genes associated with micronutrients.

Seabuckthorn (genus Hippophae L., family Elaeagnaceae), rich in vitamin C, anthocyanin, and minerals including iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn), is a potential candidate to combat micronutrient malnutrition. In this study, high diversity for Fe (39.7-341.5 mg kg- 1), Zn (0.6-12.7 mg kg- 1), and vitamin C (40-595 mg 100 g- 1) was found in 70 accessions across Gilgit region of northern Pakistan (2444-3172 m.a.s.l). Orange/yellow fruit colours abundantly found at lower altitudes showed the highest Fe concentration (250.03 ± 61.5 mg kg- 1). Despite high phytic acid levels (785-1811 mg kg- 1), low ratios fo

Dietary Intake of Micronutrients and Use of Vitamin and/or Mineral Supplements: Brazilian National Food Survey.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Vitamin and/or mineral supplements are designed to correct micronutrient deficiencies or maintain adequate intake. However, evidence suggests the indiscriminate use of these products, particularly among populations that already meet their micronutrient requirements through diet. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of vitamin and/or mineral supplement use and assess the dietary intake of micronutrients among users and non-users in the Brazilian adult and elderly populations. METHODS: The prevalence of vitamin and/or mineral supplement use was estimated from a samp…

Seed coating with micronutrients improves germination, growth, yield and microelement nutrients of maize (Zea mays L.).

Soil and foliar application are the most widely used methods for adding micronutrients to maize. High quality micronutrient fertilizers, however, are difficult to obtain in developing countries; micronutrient seed coatings are an attractive and practical alternative. We applied this approach to maize (Zea mays L.) to demonstrate the effects of boron (B), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo) and zinc (Zn) sulfates on maize germination, vigor, seedling growth, seed yield and seed quality as well as on seed microelement concentration. Seed coating was tested on three representative Chinese …
