PURPOSE: To investigate the toxicity of topical glaucoma medications using cultured stratified human corneal epithelial sheets (HCES).
METHODS: HCES were exposed for 30 minutes to the following glaucoma medications: 0.1% brimonidine with sodium chlorite as the preservative, 0.005% latanoprost with 0.02% benzalkonium chloride (BAC) as the preservative, and 0.5% timolol with 0.005% BAC as the preservative. A surgically obtained lens from a 66-year-old man with the Weill-Marchesani syndrome was examined histopathologically by light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. PURPOSE: To determine the presence of bacterial biofilm on nylon sutures removed from clinically noninfected eyes after cataract surgery.
SETTING: The Eye Institute, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore, Singapore.
METHODS: Sutures were removed from 10 eyes after cataract surgery at different time periods. Immediately after removal, the sutures were fixed and dehydrated. All sutures were viewed by scanning electron microscopy, and 6 were also viewed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Dental hypersensitivity, a prevalent oral health issue, is closely associated with the exposure of dentinal tubules. We studied two cases of mandibular radicular cysts lined in part with ciliated epithelium by examining them histopathologically and ultrastructurally. In addition, we examined the incidence of cilia in 205 radicular cysts in the biopsy materials collection in our Department. No other mandibular cysts having cilia in the lining were found, and so these were very rare. The effect of vagotomy on parietal microflora was studied in intact rats and rats with chronic experimental gastric ulcer using stereometry, as well as light, transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Vagotomy was found to increase the relative amount of parietal microflora on day 30 following denervation, especially in the duodenum and pylorus. Chronic gastric ulcers are also associated with a rise in the relative amount of parietal microflora.
