BACKGROUND: Leukemia/lymphoma cases reported in 2001 among United Nation soldiers or peacekeepers deployed to the Balkans aroused alert on the exposure to depleted uranium. Recent epidemiological studies carried out in different European countries among peacekeepers who served in the Balkans failed to demonstrate a higher than expected risk of all cancers but, mostly due to their limitations in size and follow up time, leave open the debate on health risk of depleted uranium. The aim of SIGNUM (Study of the Genotoxic Impact in Military Units) was to identify potential genotoxic risk associated

CONTEXT: Previous research has demonstrated neuropsychological changes following Iraq deployment. It is unknown whether these changes endure without subsequent war-zone exposure or chronic stress symptoms.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the associations of time since deployment, combat intensity, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression symptoms with longer-term neuropsychological outcomes in war-deployed soldiers.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study involving (1) soldiers assessed at baseline (median, 42 days prior to deployment) and following return from Iraq (median, 404 days after r

BACKGROUND: Military medical readiness plays a significant role in global military operations. While the severity of combat-related trauma is evident, musculoskeletal injuries (MSK's), are the largest medical threat to deployment readiness, and accounted for more than 60% of limited duty days in 2019. Across MSK's, the spine (lumbosacral: 30%; cervical: 22%; thoracic: 10%) accounts for 62% of MSKs. In the military population, there is a tremendous economic impact in training, retaining, and deploying a service member. Return-to-duty (RTD) rates and length of time for the treatment protocols fo

INTRODUCTION: Military forces have long supported epidemic and pandemic response, offering rapid mobilization, logistics, and operational capacity in challenging environments. Their roles-from building treatment centers and transporting supplies to enforcing quarantines-were especially visible during the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite abundant case-specific literature, no broad synthesis has examined operational contributions, ethical dilemmas, coordination mechanisms, and long-term effects on health systems.

BACKGROUND: Helminth infections caused by parasitic worms, including nematodes (roundworms), cestodes (tapeworms) and trematodes (flukes), can cause chronic symptoms and serious clinical outcomes if left untreated. The US military frequently conducts activities in helminth-endemic regions, particularly Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. However, the military does not currently screen for these infections, and to date, no comprehensive surveillance studies have been completed to assess the frequency of helminth diagnoses in the military personnel and their families.

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed tocompare recurring themes in the artistic expression of military service members (SMs) with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury and psychological health (PH) conditions with measurable psychiatric diagnoses. Affective symptoms and struggles related to verbally expressing information can limit communication in individuals with symptoms of PTSD and deployment-related health conditions. Visual self-expression through art therapy is an alternative way for SMs with PTSD and other PH conditions to communicate their lived experiences. This study

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a significant public health concern, particularly among military service members exposed to blast-related trauma. While mild TBIs often resolve within weeks, a subset of patients may experience lifelong, persistent, debilitating symptoms. We report a case of a previously healthy male combat medic who sustained a blast-related traumatic brain injury during deployment in Afghanistan, with no loss of consciousness or direct head trauma. Despite the initial mild presentation, he has experienced chronic post-concussive symptoms for over 15 years. This patient pr

The 2014 West Africa Ebola virus disease outbreak prompted the deployment to Sierra Leone of non-governmental organisations and the UK Joint Inter-Agency Taskforce including personnel from the UK Defence Medical Services (DMS). Some of these military personnel partnered with the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) as an example of Defence Healthcare Engagement (DHE).UK DMS mentors assisted RSLAF to plan and upscale Ebola treatment units. Use of military analysis and planning tools facilitated robust and flexible plans to be produced while under significant time and resource constrain

BACKGROUND: Healthcare providers (HCPs) play a pivotal role in shaping access to and ethical deliberation around fertility preservation. While fertility preservation due to oncological and non-oncological diseases is widely accepted, its use for other reasons, such as career development, gender transition, or military deployment, raises ethical and professional questions. This study aimed to explore the attitudes of HCPs in Portugal towards fertility preservation across different indications and to identify professional factors associated with variations in perceived support.

Engaging in firefights or witnessing death and other types of combat experiences are occupational hazards associated with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and depression in military personnel returning from combat deployments. The present study examined savouring beliefs as a moderator of the relationship between combat exposure and mental health symptoms among U.S. Army soldiers deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Soldiers (N = 885) completed measures of combat exposure, savouring beliefs, PTSD, and depression. Savouring was negatively related to symptoms

The Spanish Armed Forces require optimal oral health to ensure operability during international missions. In a cross-sectional study with a sample of 691 military personnel, 17.66% were classified as temporarily unfit (NAT), predominantly among enlisted ranks (21.7%). Employment status and smoking showed significant associations with NAT (P < .000), while gender, age, and alcohol consumption were not significant factors. The decayed, missing filled teeth index, particularly its decayed component, was strongly related to NAT (P = .000). Periodontal disease presence and the need for multiple den

As a result of scientific publications indicating that the last two decades have seen an increase in the number of suicides in the US Armed Forces, the topic of suicide in the military of other countries, such as Germany, has also received a lot of attention in media and science alike. Risk factors for suicidal behaviour and suicide were identified in several research projects in the US, Canada, the UK, and Germany. Until now, German suicide research among military service personnel has mainly focused on epidemiological aspects of suicides and suicidality, individual risk factors, sub-groups a

Physiological and hygienic requirements imposed on water supply for troops in the Arctic zone. The deployment of military garrisons in the Arctic zone requires solutions of health and working capacity maintenance among the military personnel. One of them is to provide a physiologically adequate and safe water supply. Direct use of water for drinking purposes, obtained by the melting of snow, does not meet the physiological needs of the body as a result of the almost complete lack of mineral salts in it. It determines the urgency of the problem of melt water conditioning. The article contains a

Retrospective studies of military personnel and survivors of community disasters suggest a link between traumatic exposure and substance use. This is the first study to investigate this association prospectively in a military population. A representative cohort of members of the UK Armed Forces was recruited into a longitudinal study, with 1382 people surveyed at baseline, and 941 followed up around three years later. Alcohol and cigarette use were assessed on both occasions, and combat exposures during this time were assessed at follow-up. Alcohol consumption and the prevalence of binge-drink

The Blast Exposure Threshold Survey (BETS) is a recently developed measure of lifetime blast exposure. Although promising, it is considered a fundamental tenet to establish that the BETS (and other measures like it) have good psychometric properties before it can be recommended for clinical use. The purpose of this study was to examine the test-retest reliability of the BETS in a military sample. Participants were 83 United States service members and veterans prospectively recruited from three military medical treatment facilities and from the community. Participants were classified into two b

Military service is associated with increased risk of mental health problems. Previous reviews have pointed to under-utilization of mental health services in military populations. Building on the most recent systematic review, our narrative, critical review takes a complementary approach and considers research across the Five-Eyes nations from the past six years to update and broaden the discussion on pathways to mental healthcare in military populations. We find that at a broad population level, there is improvement in several indicators of mental health care access, with greater gains in ini

INTRODUCTION: Women make up 16.3% of the Department of Defense (DoD) active duty military population. January 2016, the Secretary of the Defense opened all military positions to women, including combat positions. Identifying conditions that may impact health and military readiness are essential to maintaining a fit and ready force. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that has significant health and military readiness implications for active duty service women (ADSW). Some of the common manifestations of PCOS, overweight, obesity, and abnormal menstrual cycles, have a direct impact

In the wake of recent atrocities there has been renewed apprehension regarding the possibility of chemical and biological weapon (CBW) deployment by terrorists. Despite various international agreements that proscribe their use, certain states continue to develop chemical and biological weapons of mass destruction. Of greater concern, recent historical examples support the prospect that state-independent organizations have the capability to produce such weapons. Indeed, the deliberate deployment of anthrax has claimed several lives in the USA since September 11, 2001. In the event of a signific
