BACKGROUND: Scrub typhus is an emerging vector-borne zoonosis, caused by Orientia spp. and transmitted by larvae of trombiculid mites, called chiggers. It mainly occurs within a region of the Asia-Pacific called the tsutsugamushi triangle, where rodents are known as the most relevant hosts for the trombiculid vector. However, the reservoir(s) and vector(s) of the scrub typhus outside Asia-Pacific are unknown. The disease has recently been discovered on and is considered endemic for Chiloé Island in southern Chile. The aim of the present work was to detect and determine the prevalence of chigge

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and ocular Demodex mite infection.
METHOD: About 381 patients with T2DM from nearby communities were enrolled, and 163 age-matched and sex-matched nondiabetic patients from the cataract clinic were included as the control group. All subjects underwent personal history and demographic data collection, ocular examination, and lash sampling, followed by microscopic identification and counting of Demodex mites. Binocular fundus photography was performed for diabetic patients. Statistical corr

A sample of 196 Irish stoats Mustela ermineae hibernica Thomas & Barrett-Hamilton (Carnivora: Mustelidae) were examined and yielded 2580 arthropod ectoparasites, including 1819 larval mites Neotrombicula autumnalis (Shaw) from a single host. Other ectoparasites recovered included lice (99% Trichodectes ermineae (Hopkins], ticks (mostly Ixodes hexagonus Leach) and four species of fleas. The ticks and fleas were considered to have come mainly from nests of other hosts. The flea species did not reflect the status of their usual hosts in the diet of stoats, but did reflect the stoats' use of their

Mange caused by Psoroptes cuniculi was first recognised in goats in Fiji in 1977. Of 33 widely separated herds examined 16 were infested 4 herds having the "extensive" type lesions in older goats. Treatment of the skin and superficial ear lesions with malathion or gamma-BHC was successful but mites survived in the proximal parts of the ear canal. Re-appearance of the mites following treatment was a common problem.

Invasive environmentally transmitted parasites have the potential to cause declines in host populations independent of host density, but this is rarely characterized in naturally occurring populations. We investigated (1) epidemiological features of a declining bare-nosed wombat (Vombatus ursinus) population in central Tasmania owing to a sarcoptic mange (agent Sarcoptes scabiei) outbreak, and (2) reviewed all longitudinal wombat-mange studies to improve our understanding of when host population declines may occur. Over a 7-year period, the wombat population declined 80% (95% CI 77-86%) and ex

Multiple nodular skin lesions on an adults Saanen doe were found to be caused by demodectic mites. An identical condition developed in the daughter of the affected goat despite separation from the mother at 24 hours after birth. Of 7 other goats in contact with the doe, 2 had a few demodectic nodules. Of 84 goats examined at a local show, 7 (from 4 herds) were similarly affected. The observations suggested that the nodular form of demodicosis is widespread in Michigan dairy goats and that perinatal transmission may occur..

Megninia ginglymura (Mégnin) (Acari: Analgidae) is a widely distributed feather mite species. In South America, ectoparasitism have been documented in laying hens in Venezuela and Brazil, with records in the latter country from the states of Ceará, Paraíba, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Rio Grande do Sul. Between March and June 2024, were examined, monthly, feathers from Automated Vertical Climate System (AVC), Automated Vertical System (AVS) and Automated Californian System (SIG) in the northeastern region of the state of Pará, Brazil, in the Amazon biome. Poultry red mites (PRMs, Dermanyssus gallinae) are hematophagous ectoparasites of chickens that pose a significant threat to the egg-laying industry. The emergence of acaricide-resistant PRMs raises the demand for alternative control approaches such as vaccination. However, several vaccine antigens have failed to suppress the growth of PRM populations in field trials due to difficulties in maintaining antibody levels. In ticks, the molecules exposed to the host, such as lipocalins, can facilitate antibody production, and are therefore considered advantageous as vaccine antigens. Therefore, we

BACKGROUND: Demodex mites are among the most prevalent human parasites. While commonly found on healthy individuals, an overpopulation of this arachnid resident of human skin triggers demodicosis, a neglected yet widely prevalent disease with considerable skin and eye morbidity. Despite its health impact, demodicosis remains overshadowed by other common skin diseases. This neglect has significant consequences for individual and public health, which require a paradigm shift in our understanding and management of this ubiquitous ectoparasite. We reviewed the literature to re-evaluate the pathoge

Psoroptic mange causes relevant losses of productivity in cattle. Macrocyclic lactones are one of the main pharmacological tools recommended for controlling it. The aim of the current work was to compare the relationship between the pharmacokinetic behavior and the effectiveness of both ivermectin (IVM) and doramectin (DRM) following their administration as either the traditional (1 %) or long-acting (3.15-3.5 %) injectable formulations to cattle naturally infected with Psoroptes ovis. The overall work involved three trials (1, 2 and 3) carried out on commercial beef cattle farms (grazing syst

OBJECTIVE: An increase in the counts of the Demodex mites that exist in the microbiota of healthy individuals may lead to some dermatological diseases. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of Demodex spp. among patients diagnosed with acne vulgaris, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, and pityriasis folliculorum and the relationship between the demographic and clinical data of such patients and Demodex.
METHODS: This study included 144 patients (70 with acne vulgaris, 6 with pityriasis folliculorum, 15 with seborrheic dermatitis, 39 with rosacea, 8 with ecze

BACKGROUND: Canine demodicosis is a common disease in small animal practice. Although a number of studies evaluating treatment efficacy for canine demodicosis have used clinical scoring systems, none have been validated.
OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the validity, reliability, reproducibility and sensitivity to change of a clinical scoring system for canine demodicosis.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Fifty-eight dogs with generalised demodicosis were evaluated using a clinical scoring system that assessed erythema, comedones/ papules/pustules, follicular casts/scales/crusts and alopecia, rated fr

BACKGROUND: Sensitive skin is subjective cutaneous hyperreactivity to environmental factors. Demodicosis is a skin disorder caused by Demodex mites. There may be a link between demodicosis and sensitive skin.
AIM: This study aimed to examine facial Demodex mites density and other factors associated with sensitive skin in patients.
METHODS AND METHODS: A total of 349 randomly selected patients presented to the dermatology department. The research data were collected using a questionnaire form that included the participants' sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics, a sensitive skin ques
