The Effects of Chronic Medical Conditions and Obesity on Self-Reported Disability in Older Mexican Americans.

We investigated the effect of chronic medical conditions including obesity on self-reported disability and mobility in Mexican Americans aged 75 or over using data from the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiological Study of the Elderly (Hispanic EPESE) Wave 5 (2004-2005). Disability was assessed with a modified version of the Katz activities of daily living (ADL) scale and mobility was assessed with the Rosow Breslau scale of gross mobility function. The percentage of participants needing assistance with ADLs were as follows: 26.7% for transferring from a bed to chair, 26.6% for

Lower urinary tract symptoms and incident functional limitations among older community-dwelling men.

BACKGROUND: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are associated with frailty phenotype, a risk factor for functional decline. Our objective w … ADLs, and 4% for cognition-dependent task limitations. Compared to none/mild LUTS, risk of incident mobility limitations was increased for moderate (ARR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.12, 1.63) and severe LUTS (ARR = 1.98, 95% CI: 1.48, 2.64). Men were also at higher risk for incident ADL limitations if they reported moderate (ARR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.05, 1.67) and severe LUTS (ARR …

[Mobility and Fall Prevention in older Community-dwelling Persons].

An increasing proportion of oldest old persons (over 80 years) accompanies the demographic change. Furthermore, the gender ration will also change and the percentage of older men will increase. Mobility is an important factor for maintaining independence and for "healthy aging". Mobility has to be regarded in the context of individual and environmental factors. With increasing age, the risk of mobility limitation increases. Next to mobility, falls are also a drastic experience for older persons and cannot only have physical consequences like injuries but also psychological consequences as fall…

Involving Older Adults in the Technology Design Process: A Case Study on Mobility and Wellbeing in the Built Environment.

Older adults benefit from unstructured, lifestyle-based activity that can be carried out in people's houses, neighbourhoods, and the built environment. Technological solutions may support physical activity and encourage wellbeing. To ensure such technology is suitable for, and usable by, older adults, it is crucial they are involved in all stages of design. Participatory design methodologies facilitate collaboration and engagement with potential users. We examine the suitability of participatory design for collaborating and engaging with older adults. Participatory design workshops were conduc

Estimation of reduced walking speed using simple measurements of physical and psychophysiological function in community-dwelling elderly people: a cross-sectional and longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of reduced mobility function is important in elderly people. Usual walking speed is useful to assess mobility function, but is often not feasible in a community setting. AIMS: This study aimed to explore a simple surrogate indicator of usual walking speed in elderly people. METHODS: The participants were 516 community-dwelling elderly people. As a baseline survey, the usual walking speed and candidates of surrogate indicators including physical function and psychophysiological function were measured. After 2 years, the occurrence of mobility limitation was assesse…

Agent Based Modelling for Simulating the Interregional Patient Mobility in Italy.

Patient mobility is considered one of the main concerns for policy-makers as it impacts financial sustainability of regional health systems due to the high percentage of patients accessing care services in other regions. For a better understanding of this phenomenon, it is necessary to define a behavioral model able to represent the patient-system interaction. In this paper we adopted the Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) approach with the aim of simulating patient flow across regions and determining which are the main factors influencing it. This may provide a new insight for policy makers to captu

Effect of the Implementation of the French Hospital Regionalization Policy on Patient Mobility.

A new law was voted in France in 2016 to increase cooperation between public sector hospitals. Hospitals were encouraged to work under the leadership of local referral centers and to share their support functions (e.g., information systems) with newly created hospital groups, called "Regional Hospital Groups." The law made it compulsory for each public sector hospital to become affiliated with one of 136 newly created hospital groups. The policy's aim was to ensure that all patients were sent to the hospital best qualified to treat their unique condition, among the hospitals available at the r
