Moral injury, coping strategies, and supports among Canadian public safety personnel.

INTRODUCTION: Public safety personnel (PSP) are at increased risk of exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) and moral injury because of the nature of their work. The purpose of this study was to explore how moral injury relates to coping strategies and supports that PSP may use to care for their mental health. METHOD: Between June 2022 and June 2023, PSP were invited to participate in an online survey that indexed socio-demographic information, moral injury (with shame and trust violation sub-scales), perceived organizational support, social support, spiritual well-being, se

Exploring potentially morally injurious events and mental health in a UK representative population.

Introduction: Potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) are events which conflict with an individual's deeply held moral convictions and beliefs. PMIE research has focused on potentially at-risk populations such as military personnel. However, limited research has examined PMIEs and their association with mental health and functioning in the general population. The current cross-sectional study aims to explore the prevalence of PMIEs and associated mental health and functioning in a UK representative sample. The secondary aim is to provide an overview of the health and wellbeing of the samp

Co-designing a novel intervention for prison staff affected by moral injury: a protocol.

Background: Exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) can contribute towards serious mental disorders. Prisons are uniquely challenging environments where staff must fulfil competing roles of security, care, and rehabilitation. Currently no manualised intervention for moral injury-related distress exists for prison staff. Here we describe the 'Co-designing a program for Addressing staff wellbeing and Reducing moral injury Experiences' (CARE) study protocol, which aims to co-develop an intervention to prevent and respond to moral injury-related ill health. Methods: Data will be co

"Scarcity," "Futility," and "Moral Distress": A Case Analysis of the Challenges of Sound Ethical Description.

Appropriate use of ethical terminology is critical to effective, goal-concordant care, particularly for patients who are critically ill or nearing the end of life. In this case analysis, we describe how the ethical terms "scarcity," "futility," and "moral distress" were used in ways that failed to accurately capture the clinical situation, and likely favored the viewpoints of the clinical team. While careful attention to accurate clinical and ethical terminology is challenging in cases like this, we argue it is essential to communicate honestly and effectively with patients and families grappl

Moral Resilience and Its Association With Predictors in Emergency Nurses: A Latent Profile Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency nurses require strong moral resilience to maintain professional ethics and provide quality care, even when facing challenges and work-related stress. This study sought to investigate the factors influencing moral resilience profiles among emergency nurses and provide recommendations to nursing managers for their enhancement. METHODS: In January to April 2024, a total of 543 emergency nurses from 28 tertiary hospitals in Guangdong Province were surveyed. The measurements included the General Demographic Questionnaire, Rushton Moral Resilience Scale, Simplified Coping St

Moral injury and substance use among Veterans: Opportunities and challenges in rural areas.

Veterans experience substantial health disparities, which are compounded in rural areas where health care access is limited. Many Veterans experience service-associated adverse mental health (MH) disorders and substance use disorders (SUDs). These may be exacerbated in rural communities where stigma toward MH disorders and SUDs may be prevalent. Thus, it is necessary to identify rural Veterans at risk of service-related MH-SUD and provide treatment outside the context of formal clinical venues. One means to intervene may be the implementation of field-based screening and treatment for moral in

The Cost of Love: Emotional Labour and Moral Tensions in the Lives of Chinese Young Carers.

Like adults, children also provide care. This article explores the emotional labour of young carers who care for ill or disabled family members in China, a context where children's caregiving remains largely invisible in both policy and scholarship. Drawing on 15 months of ethnographic fieldwork with 30 young carer families in both urban and rural China, this study investigates how children manage, suppress, and perform emotions to sustain family life in the absence of formal welfare support. Building on Hochschild's (2012) concept of emotional labour, the analysis reveals how culturally embed

Cardiac vagal modulation predicts decision-making in sacrificial and everyday moral dilemmas.

Cardiac vagal modulation indicates the self-regulatory activity of the autonomic nervous system and can thus be used to assess an individual's ability to integrate physiological, cognitive, and emotional responses in the decision-making process. In this paper, cardiac vagal modulation, quantified by heart rate variability (HRV), was used to predict decision-making in two types of moral dilemmas: First, sacrificial dilemmas which create a moral conflict between utilitarian (acting to maximise aggregate well-being by sacrifice) and deontological (rejecting the sacrifice) alternatives; second, ev

The Problem Is Not (Merely) Mass Incarceration: Incarceration as a Bioethical Crisis and Abolition as a Moral Obligation.

Mass incarceration is an ethical crisis. Yet it is not only the magnitude of the system that is troubling. Mass incarceration has been created and sustained by racism, classism, and ableism, and the problems of the criminal legal system will not be solved without meaningfully intervening upon these forms of oppression. Beyond that, incarceration itself-whether of one person or 2 million-represents a moral failing. To punish and control, rather than invest in community and healing, is antithetical to the values of the field of bioethics. This commentary, which responds to the article "Fifty Yea

Responsibility Arguments in Defence of Abortion: When One is Morally Responsible for the Creation of a Fetus.

I argue against responsibility arguments that offer a defence of abortion even on the assumption that the fetus is a person. I focus on argumentation originally offered by Judith Jarvis Thomson and then later defended by David Boonin. I offer thought experiments meant to show that, under certain conditions, one bears moral responsibility for creating a fetus. I then offer a positive argument for when one is morally responsible for the creation of a fetus. This argument relies on the presence of other forms of sex that reasonably approximate the goods of penile-vaginal intercourse. Given the pr

Moral Injury, Chaplaincy and Mental Health Provider Approaches to Treatment: A Scoping Review.

The aim of this research was to describe the evidence examining the approaches taken by mental health providers (MHPs) and chaplains to address symptoms related to moral injury (MI) or exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs). This research also considers the implications for a holistic approach to address symptoms related to MI that combines mental health and chaplaincy work. A scoping review of literature was conducted using Medline, PsycINFO, Embase, Central Register of Controlled Trials, Proquest, Philosphers Index, CINAHL, SocINDEX, Academic Search Complete, Web of Science

A Model of Perfectionism, Moral Disengagement, Altruism, and Antisocial and Prosocial Behaviors in Wheelchair Athletes.

Two forms of perfectionism were examined in the present study to see whether they predicted prosocial and antisocial behaviors in sport through moral disengagement and altruism in a sample of 327 wheelchair basketball and rugby athletes (M = 33.57 years, SD = 10.51; 83% male). Using structural equation modeling, the following significant direct and indirect effects were found. First, perfectionistic strivings positively predicted perceived prosocial behaviors and altruism. Second, perfectionistic concerns negatively predicted altruism and prosocial behaviors and positively predicted moral dise

Needs to address clinicians' moral distress in treating unvaccinated COVID-19 patients.

BACKGROUND: Moral dilemmas have arisen concerning whether physicians and other providers should treat patients who have declined COVID vaccination and are now sick with this disease. Several ethicists have argued that clinicians have obligations to treat such patients, yet providing care to these patients has distressed clinicians, who have at times declined to do so. Critical questions thus emerge regarding how best to proceed. MAIN BODY: Providers face moral tensions: whether to place the benefits to an unvaccinated patient over their duties to protect themselves and their families, staff a

The heart as judge: Association of heart rate variability with moral judgement-A replication study.

There is growing research into contributing processes and biological correlates of moral inclinations. Recently, a negative association between utilitarianism and resting heart rate variability (HRV) as an indicator of cardiac vagal tone/parasympathetic activity was reported. We aimed to replicate and extend these findings by additionally investigating the sympathetic parameter electro-dermal activity (EDA), but found no associations in the total sample (N = 157). However, when taking sex and the use of combined oral contraceptives (COC) into account, we found a positive association between HR

Episodic processes in moral decisions: Evidence from medial temporal lobe amnesia.

Theoretical accounts of moral decision making imply distinct ways in which episodic memory processes may contribute to judgments about moral dilemmas that entail high conflict between a harmful action and a greater good resulting from such action. Yet, studies examining the status of moral judgment in amnesic patients with medial temporal lobe (MTL) lesions have yielded inconsistent results. To examine whether and how episodic processes contribute to high conflict moral decisions, amnesic patients with MTL damage and control participants were asked to judge the moral acceptability of a harmful

Moral distress in public health practice: Case studies from nursing education.

Moral distress in critical care nursing has been well studied; however, there is a gap in the literature related to moral distress among nurses and nursing students practicing in the community. This paper describes moral distress experienced during participation in the Interprofessional Care Access Network, a community-based nurse-led education and practice program providing longitudinal care coordination for underserved individuals and families in rural communities and urban neighborhoods. Two case studies represent client situations resulting in moral distress for nursing faculty and student

Risking vulnerability: Enacting moral agency in the is/ought gap in mental health care.

AIM: To explore how healthcare providers in acute care mental health settings navigate ethically challenging situations, enact moral agency, practice in congruence with ethical standards and mitigate moral distress (MD). DESIGN: Grounded theory, a qualitative methodology. METHODS: Over 18 months between 2015 and 2017, we reviewed documents, conducted observations and interviewed multidisciplinary participants (N = 27) from inpatient and emergency departments. Participants either provided direct care (N = 14) or were in leadership positions (N = 13). Data were analysed iteratively using const

Social media reduce users' moral sensitivity: Online shaming as a possible consequence.

In this study, we propose that social media reduce users' moral sensitivity through the mediation of the perceived moral intensity of hostile comments, which leads to behavioral consequences for online shaming. Three separate studies were conducted to explore this statement. Study 1 (N = 160) compared moral sensitivity between participants in simulated social media situations and a control group. Study 2 (N = 412) tested the mediating role of perceived moral intensity through self-rated questionnaires. Study 3 (N = 295) examined the behavioral consequences of reduced moral sensitivity on onlin
