Effects of proposed preflight adaptation training on eye movements, self-motion perception, and motion sickness: a progress report.

A program has been initiated to develop apparatus and procedures to preadapt astronauts to the sensory rearrangement associated with weightlessness in spaceflight. If space motion sickness is a consequence of adaptation to that sensory rearrangement, preflight training could afford astronauts significant relief from the motion sickness. The preflight adaptation trainer (PAT) was designed to produce rearranged relationships between visual and otolith signals analogous to those experienced in space. Investigations have been undertaken with three prototype trainers. The results indicated that exp…

Dielectrophoretic Motion and Assembly of Janus Liposomes.

As an electric field-operated and relatively noninvasive technique, dielectrophoresis (DEP) has been frequently employed in the manipulation, assembly and sorting of bioparticles, including cells, organelles and liposomes. Of the latter category, however, prior investigations have been mostly generic, treating liposomes as just another type of dielectric colloids and leaving specific lipid properties, such as their type and phase, largely unprobed. In this work, we subject microsized liposomes in either liquid-ordered or liquid-disordered phase, or their combination, under DEP, and follow thei

Motion, emotion and cognition: The melancholia conundrum.

BackgroundThe status of melancholia remains controversial. Debate has focused on whether it represents a categorically distinct disorder (binary model) or a severe expression within a unitary construct of major depressive disorder. Its defining core has also been disputed, with competing emphasis on affective symptoms, cognitive distortions, or psychomotor disturbance. Proponents of distinctiveness, notably Gordon Parker, have argued that psychomotor disturbance is central to the syndrome.ObjectiveTo critically examine historical and contemporary evidence regarding melancholia's diagnostic sta

Visual information for the identification of nonrigid motion.

van Zuijlen et al. (2025) have recently argued that the perceptual distinction between rigid and non-rigid motions of a torus knot can be based on patterns of optical flow produced by systematic changes in image shading. The present commentary will present theoretical analyses and empirical demonstrations to show that the 2D vector flow field produced by smoothly shaded surfaces is relatively useless as a source of information about rigid and nonrigid motion when an object moves relative to its sources of illumination. The evidence to support this conclusion is that the nonrigid distortions ca…

Biosensors and Biomarkers for the Detection of Motion Sickness.

Motion sickness (MS) is a prevalent syndrome that predominantly occurs during transportation and virtual reality (VR). The absence of reliable indicators and detection methods makes precise diagnosis difficult. Biomarker concentrations and trends may imply individual susceptibility, symptom classification, and the specific progression of MS. It is therefore essential to explore biosensors capable of providing sensitive, accurate, and real-time monitoring of biomarkers. This review provides a summary of the pathogenesis and biological pathways underlying MS, followed by an examination of biomar…

The shoulder joint complex in the throwing motion.

The shoulder joint complex in the overhead athlete is organized to effectively transfer the proximally generated forces distally into the arm. The organization also protects the joints and anatomic structures against the repetitive high velocities, large ranges of motions, and compressive, shear, translational, and distraction loads in the overhead motion while placing the hand in the "launch window." Coupling of the movements of the scapula, clavicle, and humerus results in scapulohumeral rhythm (SHR). Effective SHR requires the clavicle and scapula-and, at times, the mechanically linked clav…

Is there a relationship between odors and motion sickness?

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between olfaction and motion sickness. A sample of 18 participants was recruited and submitted to three sessions of nauseogenic stimulations: off vertical axis rotation (OVAR), performed under conditions of olfactory stimulation with limonene (pleasant odor), petrol (unpleasant odor) or distilled water (as a control). Motion sickness was assessed before, during and after each OVAR session. In addition, participants were asked to evaluate the intensity and hedonic valence of four odors (geraniol, limonene, butanol, petrol) as well as distil…

Neuronal mechanisms and the treatment of motion sickness.

The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the physiological basis, clinical picture and treatment options for motion sickness. Motion sickness is a well-known nausea and vomiting syndrome in otherwise healthy people. The physical signs of motion sickness occur in both humans and animals during travel by sea, automobile or airplane and in space. Furthermore, some other special situations, such as simulators, the cinema and video games, have been described as causing pseudomotion sickness. Children between 2 and 12 years old are most susceptible to motion sickness, and women are more f…

[Interocular asymmetry of nystagmus and motion sickness].

Binocular video nystagmography was employed to study the human vestibulo-ocular reaction to the double rotation test used in medical flight certification to assess vestibulo-vegetative stability. Purpose of the investigation was to establish an interrelation between parameters of the nystagmus reaction to rotation and severity of motion sickness (MS). The total of 135 medically certified flying men aged 23 to 47 years were subject to testing by intermittent Coriolis accelerations accumulation according to Bryanov's procedure. The vestibulo-vegetative reaction was assessed by the criteria of ve…

Motion sickness, stress and the endocannabinoid system.

BACKGROUND: A substantial number of individuals are at risk for the development of motion sickness induced nausea and vomiting (N&V) during road, air or sea travel. Motion sickness can be extremely stressful but the neurobiologic mechanisms leading to motion sickness are not clear. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) represents an important neuromodulator of stress and N&V. Inhibitory effects of the ECS on N&V are mediated by endocannabinoid-receptor activation. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We studied the activity of the ECS in human volunteers (n = 21) during parabolic flight maneuvers (PFs)…

Infants' sensitivity to motion and temporal change.

Infants from 1 month show a preference for moving over stationary stimuli (Volkmann and Dobson, J Exp Child Psychol 1976;22:86-99), but this does not demonstrate that they register motion as distinct from temporal change. We review behavioral and visual evoked potential results, which indicate that cortical processing of directional motion emerges around 7 weeks of age, with global motion processing emerging rapidly afterward. Motion and temporal properties seem to be sensitive indicators of neurodevelopmental disorders. Before motion processing develops, the infant's visual system is sensitiv…

Visual perception of motion in a hunting spider.

Like most other spiders Cupiennius salei (Keyserling 1877) has two different eye types, one pair of principal eyes and three pairs of secondary eyes. The principal eyes have two eye muscles each, which allow movement of the retina and are mainly used for the discrimination of stationary objects. The secondary eyes without such eye muscles are supposed to detect moving objects. Masking experiments were used to analyse the role of these two eye types in motion detection. In a white arena the animals were stimulated with short sequences of moving black bars. The principal eyes move involuntarily …

The role of self-motion in acrophobia treatment.

Acrophobia is a chronic, highly debilitating disorder preventing sufferers from engaging with high places. Its etiology is linked to the development of mobility during infancy. We evaluated the efficacy of various types of movement in the treatment of this disorder within a virtual reality (VR) environment. Four men and four women who were diagnosed with acrophobia were tested in a virtual environment reproducing the balcony of a hotel. Anxiety and behavioral avoidance measures were taken as participants climbed outdoor stairs, moved sideways on balconies, or stood still. This took place in bo

Interfragmentary motion in patients with scaphoid nonunion.

PURPOSE: Scaphoid nonunions are a common complication of scaphoid fractures and frequently progress to degenerative arthritis. This study evaluated the effect of scaphoid nonunion on the in vivo kinematics of the radioscaphocapitate articulation. METHODS: Computed tomography with a markerless registration technique was used to quantify motion of the scaphoid, lunate, and capitate in vivo, in 6 patients with unilateral scaphoid nonunion. The 3-dimensional helical axis of motion rotations of each bone were measured as a function of wrist flexion-extension and compared with those of the uninjure…

Extrapolation of visual motion for manual interception.

We examine the potential to treat unstable ventilatory control (seen in periodic breathing, Cheyne-Stokes respiration, and central sleep apnea) with carefully controlled dynamic administration of supplementary CO(2), aiming to reduce ventilatory oscillations with minimum increment in mean CO(2). We used a standard mathematical model to explore the consequences of phasic CO(2) administration, with different timing and dosing algorithms. We found an optimal time window within the ventilation cycle (covering approximately 1/6 of the cycle) during which CO(2) delivery reduces ventilatory fluctuati

Effects of a range-of-motion exercise programme.

AIM: This paper reports an evaluation of a range-of-motion exercise programme aimed at improving joint flexibility, activity function, perception of pain, and depressive symptoms in a sample of stroke survivors in long-term care facilities. BACKGROUND: The benefits of physical rehabilitation for stroke survivors have been well established. There is, however, little empirical data on the effects of a simple nurse-led range-of-motion exercise programme in improving function for these people. METHOD: A randomized controlled trial was conducted in 1999 with 59 bedridden older stroke survivors in…

Hyperventilation in a motion sickness desensitization program.

INTRODUCTION: In motion sickness desensitization programs, the motion sickness provocative stimulus is often a forward bending of the trunk on a rotating chair, inducing Coriolis effects. Since respiratory relaxation techniques are applied successfully in these courses, we investigated whether these repetitive trunk movements by themselves may induce hyperventilation and consequently add to the motion sickness. METHODS: There were 12 healthy subjects who participated in our study. In the Baseline condition, subjects sat relaxed on the stationary chair. In the Hypervent condition, subjects per…

Attention, dyslexia, and the line-motion illusion.

Dyslexic readers have been found to have a reduced line-motion illusion. This has been interpreted as evidence for an attention deficit of magnocellular origin. We show that this interpretation has severe problems: 1) to link reduced line-motion illusion to attention overlooks other factors, 2) to link the line-motion illusion specifically to the magnocellular system is problematic because the illusion can be obtained with isoluminant stimuli, 3) reduced illusory motion in dyslexic individuals may reflect sensory deficits, and 4) to link dyslexia specifically to the magnocellular system is in …
