Music therapy has gained recognition as a safe, effective, and person-centered intervention that bridges neuroscience, medicine, and humanities. This review synthesizes current evidence on its clinical applications, mechanisms of action, ethical complexities, and policy implications. While the strongest evidence lies in dementia care, expanding research demonstrates its effectiveness in managing a wide range of conditions, including Parkinson's disease, stroke, acquired and traumatic brain injury (ABI/TBI), schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorder, depression, insomnia, and in palliative care.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a useful non-invasive tool for studying autonomic nervous system modulation under emotional stimulation; however, accurate estimation of dominant frequencies in HRV signals remains challenging due to their non-stationary nature and the sensitivity of some spectral methods to configuration parameters. This work presents a methodology for the spectral characterization of HRV signals derived from ECG recordings from the DREAMER database, with emphasis on optimizing the model order of the MUSIC algorithm to improve dominant frequency localization within the physiolo

A male clarinettist in his 50s presented with upper lip pain caused by repeated contact with his maxillary incisors during performance. Clinical examination revealed a whitish lesion on the upper labial mucosa, with otherwise healthy dentition aside from sharp-edged maxillary anterior teeth. Music splints consisting of acrylic lip shields of two thicknesses were fabricated and tested. Psychoacoustic analysis and patient self-assessment guided selection of the optimal splint, which demonstrated superior dynamic control and playing comfort. The mucosal lesion resolved within 3 weeks and the pati

OBJECTIVES: Investigate contributions of cochlear implants (CIs) and hearing aids (HAs) towards musical emotion in bimodal (CI and HA together) users.
DESIGN: Bimodal implantees and normal-hearing (NH) controls were recruited from a tertiary academic centre and via community outreach. Participants listened to ten musical clips and rated on scales of valence (happiness vs. sadness) and arousal (excitement vs. calm). Primary outcome measures included discrepancy - difference from validated normative ratings for each stimulus - and range - difference between each participant's maximum and minimu

INTRODUCTION: Procedures are frequently performed under regional or local anaesthesia, where patients maintain a level of consciousness. This has been associated with heightened pre- and intraprocedural anxiety levels, which may increase the risk of emotional distress and worsen patient outcomes. Music therapy has been proposed as an effective non-pharmacological intervention to reduce anxiety levels. This is a pilot study aimed at evaluating the effect of music therapy on anxiety and perceived pain during intravitreal injections (IVI) in the Singaporean context.
METHODS: Study participants w

Alcohol use and music use were examined in relation to emotion regulation; however, most studies examined these two factors separately. We examined how people of different ages drink alcohol and listen to music within the context of emotion regulation. The following survey data was analyzed among Japanese nonproblem drinkers (20-59 years, N = 1279): How often people drink alcohol and listen to music, Tendencies to use them when experiencing negative emotions, Drinking Motives Questionnaire-Revised, Brief Music in Mood Regulation Scale, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Ten-Item Perso

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest electronic dance music attendees (EDMAs) may use hearing protection (HP) more than non-EDM attendees (non-EDMAs), but reasons remain unclear. This study explores EDMA community characteristics that may explain this disparity and strategies to increase non-EDMAs' HP use.
METHODS: An anonymous survey was distributed to online music forums. Descriptive statistics, t tests, and Pearson's chi-square tests were conducted alongside propensity-score matching to analyze EDMA and non-EDMAs, accounting for demographics and attendance characteristics. Catechol, also known as pyrocatechol, is a widespread antioxidant carcinogen that has been shown to cause central nervous system damage and metabolic abnormalities, and in zebrafish, it has been shown that exposure to aqueous solutions of catechol results in reduced pigmentation and decreased basal locomotor rate in juvenile zebrafish. However, the effects of catechol on zebrafish redox and behaviour are unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of catechol on oxidative stress levels in early zebrafish development and on behaviour in later stages of zebrafish development an

Aesthetic experiences are characterized by a conscious, emotionally and hedonically rewarding perceptions of a stimulus's aesthetic qualities and are thought to arise from a unique combination of cognitive and affective processes. To pinpoint neural correlates of aesthetic experiences, in the present study, we performed a series of meta-analyses based on the existing functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) studies of art appreciation in visual art (34 experiments, 692 participants) and music (34 experiments, 718 participants). The Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE) analyses showed tha

Integrative hospice and palliative care is a philosophy of treatment framing patients as whole persons composed of interrelated systems. The interdisciplinary treatment team is subsequently challenged to consider ethical and effective provision of holistic services that concomitantly address these systems at the end of life through cotreatment. Nurses and music therapists, as direct care professionals with consistent face-to-face contact with patients and caregivers, are well positioned to collaborate in providing holistic care. This article introduces processes of referral, assessment, and tr

Our commentary addresses how two neurodevelopmental disorders, Williams syndrome and autism spectrum disorder, provide novel insights into the credible signaling and music and social bonding hypotheses presented in the two target articles. We suggest that these neurodevelopmental disorders, characterized by atypical social communication, allow us to test hypotheses about music, social bonding, and their underlying neurobiology.

Contrary to what is commonly believed, music therapy is an old cure, the use of which is lost in the mists of time. Music always has been perceived to have particular healing powers, and the entire history of civilization contains aspects that link music to physical and mental healing. It seems that the adoption of music for therapeutic purposes harks back to a distant past, probably since the Paleolithic period: it was believed that listening to music could affect the behavior of human beings. In later centuries, the concept of "musical organ-tropism" was born and developed, because according

BACKGROUND: Although for most cochlear implant (CI) users good speech understanding is reached (at least in quiet environments), the perception and the appraisal of music are generally unsatisfactory.
PURPOSE: The improvement in music appraisal was evaluated in CI participants by using a stereo music preprocessing scheme implemented on a take-home device, in a comfortable listening environment. The preprocessing allowed adjusting the balance among vocals/bass/drums and other instruments, and was evaluated for different genres of music. The correlation between the preferred settings and the pa

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a result of hyper-activity/hyper-synchrony of auditory neurons coding the tinnitus frequency, which has developed due to synchronous mass activity owing to the lack of inhibition. We assume that removal of exactly these frequencies from a complex auditory stimulus will cause the brain to reorganize around tonotopic regions coding the tinnitus frequency through inhibition-induced plasticity. Based on this assumption, a novel treatment for tonal tinnitus--tailor-made notched music training (TMNMT)--has been introduced and was tested in this clinical trial.
