[Human genital myiasis due to Sarcophaga].

Human myiasis are infestations produced by fly larvae which invade human tissues or cavities. We report a case of semi-specific myiasis which consisted in infestation of the vulvar region of an eighty-six-year old, diabetic patient who was admitted in a clinical center for elderly. The development from larva to adult fly was carried out in the laboratory and it was identified as Sarcophaga. The infestation was resolved extracting the larvae and washing the affected area with an antiseptic solution.

Case report: myiasis--the botfly boil.

Cutaneous furunculoid myiasis arises from the infestation of skin or mucous membranes with dipterous larvae. Myiasis from the botfly Dermatobia hominis is a common parasitic disease of the tropics of Central and South America, and may present in the United States. With increasing travel by U.S. citizens, there is potential for increased occurrence; it is important to be able to accurately diagnose myiasis and differentiate it from entities with similar presentations, such as leishmaniasis. The authors describe four cases of myiasis from D. hominis infestation and review clinical features, diff…

Antibacterial action of Myiasis-causing flies.

Some species of calliphorid blowflies lay their eggs in wounds; their larvae develop by feeding on the tissue, and the infection is known as myiasis or fly-strike. But wounds, from whatever cause, are frequently contaminated with bacteria - many o f which can spread in the bloodstream causing septicaemia and/or toxaemia. For example, wound contamination with Clostridium welchii - leading to 'gas gangrene' - was a frequent cause of death amongst battlefield casualties. It is from such situations that early observations were made on the beneficial effect of some blowfly larvae in limiting the ba…

Nosocomial oral myiasis caused by Chrysomya bezziana in Iran: A new case and review of human myiasis in the country.

Chrysomya bezziana can potentially cause myiasis, a condition in which fly larvae infest living tissue in humans and animals. Contributing factors to this rare ailment include poor oral hygiene, alcohol abuse, and infected wounds. Hospital-acquired myiasis, a rare type of myiasis, occurs in patients following hospital admission. Herein, we report a case of C. bezziana oral myiasis in an 89-year-old female patient hospitalized in northeastern Iran. In this article, we also present an updated review of reported human myiasis cases in Iran up to 2025. According to our findings, C. bezziana has be…

Nosocomial Myiasis Caused by Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae) and Neonatal Myiasis by Sarcophaga spp. (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) in Mexico.

The presence of nosocomial myiasis reflects a lack of adequate medical attention, due to the physical facilities and/or the health care personnel. Patients requiring special attention are more susceptible, such as those with a loss of consciousness, assisted mechanical ventilation, tracheal tubes, or nasogastric probes. Nosocomial myiasis is a rare event that has a greater occurrence in the hospitals of poor and developing countries. The two cases herein described represent the first report of nosocomial myiasis in Mexico. The causal agents were found to be Lucilia sericata and Sarcophaga spp.…
