Muscle fiber typing and in vitro contracture tests were performed in 59 patients investigated for susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia (MH). Eighteen patients were found to be susceptible to MH. There was no difference in age or fiber type distribution between MH susceptible and non-susceptible patients. No correlation was found between age and fiber type distribution. Separate analyses for each diagnostic group revealed no relationship between age or fiber type distribution and response to halothane or caffeine. Young Friesian steers were fed for nine months on copper supplemented or depleted diets. Immediately after they had been killed, tissues were taken from the myocardium for examination by electron microscopy. Copper deficiency was associated with extensive changes in myofibrillar and mitochondrial morphology and distribution. It is suggested that the ultra-structural changes in the myocardium were specifically attributable to copper deficiency, the most likely underlying biochemical defect being lost of cytochrome oxidase activity.

Two sisters presenting with benign congenital hypotonia are reported. In both cases the muscle biopsies demonstrated the same pathological pattern, consisting in an abnormal size disproportion between the two main cytoenzymological types of muscle fibers. Their father, exhibiting a slight and diffuse muscle weakness, showed a closely related histological aspect. These three cases bring the first evidence of a familial transmission of this new entity. Its relationship with the other types of "congenital myopathies" is discussed.

A 34-year-old chronic alcoholic with acute alcoholic intoxication was found to have extensive aggregates on muscle biopsy performed 48 hours after admission. Forearm ischemic exercise failed to demonstrate normal generation of lactic acid.
