Pulmonary inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare mesenchymal tumor, and is considered an inflammatory pseudotumor. Here, we report of a 37-year-old woman with severe cough and stridor who was diagnosed with primary IMT of the lungs, with adenocarcinoma in situ based on the pathology in December 2012. A year later, transabdominal ultrasonography demonstrated a solid mass in the uterine wall that was initially diagnosed as a leiomyoma. However, postoperative histological examination and immunohistochemical staining revealed it as a uterine metastasis of the lung IMT. One year thereaf

During tissue repair, myofibroblasts produce extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules for tissue resilience and strength. Altered ECM deposition can lead to tissue dysfunction and disease. Identification of distinct myofibroblast subsets is necessary to develop treatments for these disorders. We analyzed profibrotic cells during mouse skin wound healing, fibrosis, and aging and identified distinct subpopulations of myofibroblasts, including adipocyte precursors (APs). Multiple mouse models and transplantation assays demonstrate that proliferation of APs but not other myofibroblasts is activated by…

Wound healing is one of the most complex biological processes to occur in life. Repair of tissue following injury involves dynamic interactions between multiple cell types, growth factors, inflammatory mediators and components of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Aberrant and uncontrolled wound healing leads to a non-functional mass of fibrotic tissue. In the eye, fibrotic disease disrupts the normally transparent ocular tissues resulting in irreversible loss of vision. A common feature in fibrotic eye disease is the transdifferentiation of cells into myofibroblasts that can occur through a proc…

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMFT) is an uncommon mesenchymal solid tumor commonly documented in children and young adults. It is usually located in lungs however, extrapulmonary involvement has also been reported. Here we report a case of IMFT presenting as an ileocecal intussusception.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 55-year-old man presented with a two months history of colicky abdominal pain, more intense at the right inferior abdominal quadrant, and unintentional weight loss of 8kg in the previous four months. Computer tomography showed an image of intussusception at the cec

Retroperitoneal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare lesion of unknown etiology. The management of IMT may be challenging due to its intermediate malignant potential, the possibility of local recurrence after surgical resection and its unique anatomic location, which makes radical resection impossible due to its proximity to vital structures. Thus, treatment for recurrence and metastasis mainly relies on chemotherapy. We herein report a case of a 60-year-old man with an IMT sized 6.7×5.1 cm, located in the left adrenal area, which was identified by a computed tomography (CT) scan

An inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is an immunohistochemically diverse entity demonstrating neoplastic and nonneoplastic qualities. Although IMTs can arise in any area of the body, lesions arising in certain sites, namely, the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and pterygopalatine fossa, demonstrate a heightened neoplastic and invasive potential. Despite case specific complete tumor regression and disease remission in response to pharmacotherapeutics, a subset of IMTs remain resistant to all forms of therapy. We present such a case, a 34-year-old female patient, with a highly resistant,

Generally speaking, the excessive expression of myofibroblasts is associated with excessive collagen production. One exception is seen in patients and animal models of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV in which the COL3A1 gene mutation results in reduced collagen III but with concurrent increased myofibroblast expression. This paradox has not been examined with the use of external drugs/modalities to prevent hypertrophic scars. In this paper, we injected the rabbit ear wound model of hypertrophic scarring with two doses of a protein called nAG, which is known to reduce collagen expression and to …

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is an uncommon tumor characterized by inflammatory cell infiltration and differentiated myofibroblastic spindle cells. IMT was first described in the lung and retroperitoneum. Occurrence in bone has been well described in the maxilla and occasionally in the long bones in the adult population. We present a unique case of IMT arising primarily from the scapula in an 8-year-old patient, not described previously in the pediatric or adult literature. Imaging demonstrated an ill-defined and aggressive osteolytic lesion with cortical bone destruction associate

A 3-year-old boy presented with severe airway obstruction which was diagnosed as asthma. He improved but had repeated episodes of severe airway obstruction. On clinical examination, he had a tracheal cough and monophonic wheezing. Imaging revealed a large lesion in the distal part of the trachea which was confirmed by bronchoscopy. The lesion was surgically removed. Histology revealed features characteristic of an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour. Following the resection there is no recurrence of the lesion.

BACKGROUND: Congenital peribronchial myofibroblastic tumor is a rare, solid mesenchymal tumor of the neonate, usually associated with non-immune hydrops fetalis.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of congenital peribronchial myofibroblastic tumor, in whom a right lung mass was detected in intrauterine life. 12 days after delivery by caesarean section, right lobectomy was performed. The tumor was limited to the lung, and was composed of spindle cells, proliferating around a bronchial unit. Central necrosis and 4-5 mitoses per 10 high power fields were present. The patient is well 26 months after s

AIMS: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for individuals diagnosed with type II diabetes mellitus (DM). Changes in cardiac function, left ventricular wall thickness and fibrosis have all been described in patients and animal models of diabetes; however, the factors mediating increased matrix deposition remain unclear. The goal of this study was to evaluate whether cardiac fibroblast function is altered in a rat model of type II DM.
MAIN METHODS: Cardiac fibroblasts were isolated from 14 week old Zucker diabetic and lean control (LC) adult male rat hearts. Fibroblasts were ex

Although rare, inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is the most common primary lung mass in children. We report the case of an 11-year-old boy investigated for persistent cough and dyspnea with complete left lung atelectasis mimicking pneumonia. CT and MRI showed an endobronchial mass of the left main bronchus. The boy underwent endoscopic resection of the tumor and histology was in favor of an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the lung. This diagnosis should be suspected in children with recurrent pneumonia. The prognosis is good after complete resection.

We report a 48-year-old woman with a pleural pseudoneoplasm requiring different diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. After initial presentation with increasing dyspnoea, temperature, dry cough, and interscapular pain diagnostic processing showed a large mediastinal mass with marked pleural effusion and high metabolic activity in the 18F-FDG-PET/CT. Extensive CT-guided biopsy of the tumor reaching from the visceral pleura into the right upper lobe revealed no malignancy, but a marked inflammatory tissue reaction containing foam cells. Initial empiric antibiotic therapy was temporarily success

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) of the bladder are rarely encountered bladder tumors during the pediatric age. The unknown malignant potential of these tumors causes controversy for their treatment and follow-up. We report a 10-year-old girl who was referred to our clinic with dysuria and enuresis. The clinicopathological evaluation was compatible with IMT and a bladder preserving approach was used. There was no recurrence in the first year of follow-up examinations.

PURPOSE: To detect the transdifferentiation of keratocytes into myofibroblasts in human corneas with bullous keratopathy and to examine the relation of such transdifferentiation to the clinical course of the disease.
METHODS: Twenty patients with bullous keratopathy who underwent penetrating keratoplasty were enrolled in the study. Corneal buttons collected during surgery were examined for expression of α-smooth muscle actin (αSMA) by immunoblot analysis and by immunofluorescence analysis of whole-mount preparations. The course of bullous keratopathy was evaluated from clinical charts.

We present a case of an asymptomatic 70-year-old man with intussusception of the descending colon due to inflammatory myofibroblastic proliferation. Abdominal ultrasound examination showed a hypoechoic mass, 32 × 19 mm in size, accompanied by intussusception in the descending colon, and power Doppler sonography detected blood flow signals in the mass. Computed tomography revealed a hypervascular lesion, which was confirmed by barium enema and colonoscopy. The surgically excised mass was histologically diagnosed as inflammatory myofibroblastic proliferation. Although intussusception due to infl
