Finding a "NEW VOICE to tell my story" through the Unmasking Brain Injury project: a mixed-method analysis of wellness after brain injury.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the narratives of people with acquired brain injury (ABI) who participated in the Unmasking Brain Injury project. Through this inquiry, the multifaceted nature of wellbeing after ABI was described in the narratives, which were characterized by identifying facilitators and barriers to overall wellness. METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was utilized for this study. Narratives from people with ABI (n = 1019) that had been uploaded to a public database were analyzed in three phases: (1) document-level content analysis, (2) communication unit (c-unit) content a

Embracing complexity to challenge stigma: a qualitative analysis of representations of abortion in a Polish storytelling initiative.

Testimonies of abortion experiences are largely silenced in many contexts around the world, including Poland, and stigma affects how abortion is represented. Pro-choice initiatives, which support abortion rights, aim to challenge stigma through the sharing of personal abortion experiences (i.e. abortion storytelling). However, these initiatives may simultaneously construct normative hierarchies of abortion and stigmatise abortion stories which do not fit context-specific, politicised norms. This study draws on data purposefully sampled from a pro-choice abortion storytelling initiative in Pola

Narrative futures of pregnancy sickness: reproduction, disability, animality.

In Sarah Hall's short story 'Mrs Fox', a man wakes to find his wife, Sophia, vomiting. When Sophia's nausea continues, he imagines her wasting from a rare cancer; instead, she mutates into a fox and, after a brief captivity at their home, leaves him for the woods, only to reappear months later with a litter he claims as his progeny. Sophia's sickness is belatedly revealed as nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP), and her metamorphosis from human into fox seems to have been triggered by conception. NVP, or 'morning sickness' as it is colloquially known, tends to appear in culture as plot revea

"Yes, that's me singing to myself": Jackie Kay's "These are not my clothes" as a Self-Affirming Narrative of Care in Old Age.

Fictional stories set in care homes have increased in the last decades and, with them, the perspectives from which care homes are constructed and represented have become diversified. Care home stories. Aging, disability, and long-term residential care. Transcript Verlag]. Through the alternative worlds that are offered by literary narratives, these stories allow the reader to glimpse into the increasingly varied possibilities of care that a residential settlement can offer. At the same time, they highlight the attributes attached to human beings once their bodies are not regarded as fully func

The empowered family: New narratives to rethink dengue prevention and control in Córdoba, Colombia.

Dengue is a disease that constitutes a public health problem difficult to control due to the multidimensionality of associated factors and the particularities of the territories. This article analyzes the notion of family empowerment related to the prevention and control of dengue in Córdoba, Colombia. From July to October 2023, using a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 family groups located in the municipalities of San Andrés de Sotavento, San Bernardo del Viento, Pueblo Nuevo, and Montería, selected for being indigenous, Afro-descendant, or rural and urb

The Homeless World Cup through storytelling: The narratives of Street Soccer players from Scotland and the USA.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this paper was to explore: (a) What stories do the Street Soccer players draw upon to construct meaning around their experiences of trauma, social exclusion, and homelessness? and (b) What stories are linked to the subjective sport programming experience and resulting future orientations? DESIGN: A longitudinal narrative approach was adopted with semi-structured interviews conducted with players from Scotland and the United States (n = 16, 7 female, 9 male, M age = 27.5) across three time points. Maneuvering in Silence: Abortion Narratives and Reproductive Life Histories from the Faroe Islands.

I explore what silence surrounding abortion means to women in their everyday lives and the composition of their selfhood. My analysis is based on one-year of ethnographic fieldwork consisting of 20 interviews with women from the Faroe Islands and participant observation. Building upon theoretical frameworks of belonging and subjectivity studies, I discuss women's silent maneuverings from an understanding of freedom of choice and power as complex entities and expand on the dimensions of belonging and nonbelonging. I find that women's silent maneuverings are a navigational strategy made in a que

A Second Chance: Reenactment and Recovery Narratives in a Peruvian Drug Rehabilitation Center.

The following article discusses a collaborative, reenactment film made with the residents of a drug rehabilitation center in Iquitos, Peru. In so doing, it raises questions about narratives of recovery from addiction, and the tensions that emerge between these narratives and the often-ambivalent feelings of the people who tell them. Practices of filmmaking and reenactment generate a collaborative theorization of lived experience-in this case, the multifaceted natures of both addiction and recovery. At the same time, these practices are also attentive to the embodied memories and complex feelin

The influence of language knowledge and test components on reading comprehension scores.

This study investigated the dependability of reading comprehension scores across different text genres and response formats for readers with varied language knowledge. Participants included 78 fourth-graders in an urban elementary school. A randomized and counterbalanced 3 × 2 study design investigated three response formats (open-ended, multiple-choice, retell) and two text genres (narrative, expository) from the Qualitative Reading Inventory (QRI-5) reading comprehension test. Standardized language knowledge measures from the Woodcock Johnson III Tests of Achievement (Academic Knowledge, Ora

News media narratives of Covid-19 across 20 countries: Early global convergence and later regional divergence.

BACKGROUND: Seldom in history does one get a 'front row seat'-with large-scale dynamic data-on how online news media narratives shift with a global pandemic. News media narratives matter because they shape societal perceptions and influence the core tent poles of our society, from the economy to elections. Given its importance-and with the benefit of hindsight-we provide a systematic framework to analyze news narratives of Covid-19, laying the groundwork to evaluate policy and risk communications. OBJECTIVES: We leverage a 10-billion-word-database of online news, taken from over 7,000 English

Enhancing the care of children with chronic diseases through the narratives of patient, physician, nurse and carer.

We tested the hypothesis that a narrative approach may enhance a bio-psycho-social model (BPS) in caring for chronically ill children. Forty-eight narratives were collected from 12 children with six different medical conditions, their mothers, physicians, and nurses. By a textual analysis, narratives were classified on their predominant focus as disease (biological focus), illness (psychologic focus), or sickness (social focus). Sixty-one percent of narrative' text were classified as illness, 28% as disease and 11% as sickness. All narratives had a degree of illness focus. Narratives by patien

The use of evaluative expressions in the narratives of adolescents with a history of SLI.

Typically, young children diagnosed with specific language impairment (SLI; also called Developmental language disorder, DLD) have been found to show weakness in narrative development, and such weakness has been judged to be unlikely to resolve over time. However, developmental outcomes for adolescents with a prior SLI diagnosis have not been thoroughly studied. In particular, studies on the evaluative aspects of narratives of such persons are almost non-existent. Here we examine the question whether narrative evaluation of adolescents formerly diagnosed with SLI remains problematic into adole

The Methodology of The Witch-Hunt Narrative: A Question of Evidence-Evidence Questioned.

From an evidentiary point of view, the project Ross Cheit seeks to accomplish in his book, The Witch-Hunt Narrative: Politics, Psychology, and the Sexual Abuse of Children, is remarkably complex. I examine the methodology that underlies Cheit's scholarship to assess the strength of his claims. Cheit's work has a strong methodological core in which he asserts the existence of a "Witch-Hunt Narrative" (WHN), public perception that there are "hundreds" of legal cases involving innocent adults wrongly criminally pursued for child sexual abuse. He identifies three foundational cases in this WHN, Mc

A Response to Articles and Commentaries on The Witch-Hunt Narrative.

The articles and comments in this issue bear out the enduring impact of The Witchhunt Narrative. There is not sufficient space to acknowledge or respond to most of this feedback. This response corrects an error that was identified by one commenter and it responds to questions raised by another commenter about my analysis of the "Concerned Scientists" brief. This response also documents how Wood, Nathan, and others have misapplied the term ritual abuse, misstated the facts of many cases, and promoted "mythical numbers" that significantly exaggerate the number of false convictions. These critics

Family experiences of living with an eating disorder: a narrative analysis.

Families are considered important in the management and treatment of eating disorders. Yet, rarely has research focused on family experiences of living with an eating disorder. Addressing this gap, this study explores the experiences of an elite 21-year-old triathlete with an eating disorder in conjunction with the experiences of her parents. Family members attended interviews individually on three separate occasions over the course of a year. In line with the narrative approach adopted, whereby stories are considered the primary means to construct experience, interviews encouraged storytellin

The importance of being ironic: narrative openness and personal resilience in later life.

This essay applies a narrative perspective to the topic of resilience. On various fronts (physical, social, biographical), aging itself, it argues, pushes us past a perception of aging as intrinsically tragic and toward a more ironic stance instead, one marked by increased acceptance of uncertainty and ambiguity. Moreover, intentional engagement in narrative reflection-by means of integrative reminiscence, life review, and the like-fosters such a stance directly by facilitating narrative openness and, with it, "a good strong story" for coping with the challenges of later life.

Narrative-based intervention for word-finding difficulties: a case study.

BACKGROUND: Children with word-finding difficulties manifest a high frequency of word-finding characteristics in narrative, yet word-finding interventions have concentrated on single-word treatments and outcome measures. AIMS: This study measured the effectiveness of a narrative-based intervention in improving single-word picture-naming and word-finding characteristics in narrative in a case study. METHODS & PROCEDURES: A case study, quasi-experimental design was employed. The participant was tested on picture naming and spoken word to picture matching on control and treatment words at pre-,

The Internet as a source of data to support the development of a quality-of-life measure for eating disorders.

Despite the attractiveness of the Internet as a data source on individuals' experiences with health conditions, few have studied its use in quality-of-life instrument development. In this article, the authors describe the use of Internet-based unsolicited first-person narratives to supplement qualitative material derived from other sources (published articles and interviews) in the early stages of development of a quality-of-life instrument for eating disorders. In a systematic Internet search, they identified 31 posted first-person narratives. Sixteen (52%) authors had anorexia nervosa, 11 (3

Oral language outcomes after narrative intervention in preschoolers who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Many children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) show oral language outcomes below hearing peers. The study aimed to test the effect of a four-week narrative intervention on the narrative macrostructure outcomes of four preschoolers who are DHH. Children received eight intervention sessions, during which the interventionist provided modelling and visual support for stories, and children practiced retelling them. Additionally, we asked children to generate their own personal narratives. We used a multiple baseline single-case research design to assess narrative macrostructure changes based o
