The phase 3 DIAMOND trial conducted in patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (LA-NPC) reported comparable 3-year failure-free survival rates between a cisplatin-containing versus a cisplatin-free regimen with radiotherapy, in the backbone of induction, concurrent, and adjuvant anti-programmed death-1 (anti-PD-1) therapy.1 Reduced cisplatin-related emesis also improved quality of life. DIAMOND challenges the conventional dogma of concurrent cisplatin-radiotherapy in the treatment of LA-NPC.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review highlights current management strategies for recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and their balance between efficacy and toxicity.
RECENT FINDINGS: Optimal management of recurrent NPC requires individualized, multidisciplinary decisions that consider not only oncologic control but also functional outcomes and toxicity. Advances in imaging and Epstein--Barr virus DNA monitoring are improving early detection and risk stratification, helping tailor salvage approach to patient and disease factors. Recent evidences also shows that severe toxicity is not only moda

Hypercalcemia is a potentially life-threatening metabolic disorder with diverse etiologies. In oncology patients, it is often attributed to malignancy-related mechanisms, such as parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) secretion. However, non-malignant causes, like calcium-alkali syndrome (CAS) and adrenal insufficiency, should not be overlooked. We report a 60-year-old man with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) treated with cranial radiotherapy, stage 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD), and multiple comorbidities, who presented with recurrent severe hypercalcemia (11.0-14.9 mg/dL) and hyperphosp

Viral infections such as human papillomavirus (HPV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) play a critical role in the onset of oropharyngeal (OPC) and nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC), respectively. Despite advancements in targeted therapies and immunotherapies, in the recurrent/metastatic setting, these tumors remain incurable diseases with poor prognosis. The development of therapeutic tumor vaccines, utilizing either neoantigens or oncoviral antigens, represents a promising addition to the cancer immunotherapy arsenal. Research on vaccine-based immunotherapy for OPC and NPC focuses on targeting viral ant

RATIONALE: Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis (TB), a rare form of tuberculosis outside the lungs, can affect any organ or tissue in the body. It is difficult to diagnose because of nonspecific symptoms, often leading to delayed confirmation after the initial patient visit. Clinical manifestations such as cervical lymphadenopathy and irregular mucosal surfaces can be challenging to distinguish from nasopharyngeal cancer or malignant lymphoma.
PATIENT CONCERNS: In this case report, we present a patient initially suspected of having a malignant disease based on abnormal nasopharyngeal imaging findings

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant tumor originated from the nasopharynx epithelial cells and has been linked with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, dietary habits, environmental and genetic factors. It is a common malignancy in Southeast Asia, especially with gender preference among men. Due to its non-specific symptoms, NPC is often diagnosed at a late stage. Thus, the molecular diagnosis of NPC plays a crucial role in early detection, treatment selection, disease monitoring, and prognosis prediction. This review aims to provide a summary of the current state and the latest emer

Aspiration of the nasopharyngeal airway (NPA) is one of the rarest and life-threatening complications. In the literature, very few cases have been reported. The advent of NPA to protect the airway in semiconscious patients acts like a double-edged sword, based on the patient's condition. The patient factor plays a crucial role. Here, we are reporting a case of aspirated NPA due to the patient's poor gag reflex and human factors at the workplace. The incidence can be minimized if proper handover and documentation by caring personnel are done, which will help reduce the risk of aspiration.

The precise segmentation and three-dimensional reconstruction of the nasopharyngeal airway are crucial for the diagnosis and treatment of adenoid hypertrophy in children. However, traditional methods face challenges such as information loss and low computational efficiency when addressing this task. To overcome these issues, this paper introduces an innovative lightweight 3D medical image segmentation network-MediLite3DNet. The core of this network is the Parallel Multi-Scale High-Resolution Network (PMHNet), which effectively retains detailed features of the airway and optimizes the fusion of

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of an improvised tamponade device allowing direct pressure to be applied to the canine nasopharynx.
DESIGN: Proof-of-concept study using 8 canine cadavers.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A tamponade device was made by placing a condom over a nasogastric tube and suturing it to match the length of the nasopharynx. The device was placed in the nasopharynx of canine cadavers via the nares and filled with diluted ioversol. Placement was then confirmed with radiography or computed tomography. Concentrated ioversol was infused into the rostral nasal cavity to assess fo

Lipomas are common slow-growing benign tumors composed of mature adipose tissue. They can grow in any location where fat is present. They are well encapsulated and are generally of little clinical concern. Lipomas are typically located in the subcutaneous fat of the neck and trunk. The presence of a lipoma in the nasopharynx is rare. These lesions may produce clinical symptoms or be found incidentally. Here, we present the case of a 34-year-old male who was found to have an incidental pharyngeal lipoma following a nasopharyngoscopy for unrelated tympanostomy tube placement. This case illustrat

Leeches are rare cause of foreign body in airways. A 23-year-old male, experiencing epistaxis and difficulty in swallowing is presented. During nasopharyngoscopy, a moving leech was observed on the nasopharynx posterior wall in midline location, and removal of the leech was decided under general anaesthesia. The flexible nasopharyngoscopy was inserted, but removal was unsuccessful due to the leech's movements. Leeches are blood-sucking parasites, so neuromuscular blocking agent was given to prevent the movement. After administration, motion of the leech was lost and easily removed undamaged. I

A 2 yr old castrated male shih tzu was presented for assessment of worsening chronic snoring since first detected at 3 mo of age. An upper respiratory endoscopic examination and a computed tomographic scan showed a well-circumscribed, fluid-filled nasopharyngeal mass located in the median plane on the nasal side of the soft palate. This lesion was removed using a ventral approach to the nasopharynx by blunt-sharp dissection from the submucosal tissues of the soft palate. Histopathology revealed a cystic lesion lined by a single layer of a pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelium, characte
