Charles Lyell's theological preformationism: the role of the "Author of nature" in the uniformitarian balance of nature and the evolution of natural species.

This paper explores the role of the "Author of nature" in Charles Lyell's uniformitarianism. I start with a brief explanation of the term "uniformitarianism" and the identification of the fundamental hypotheses of Lyell's theory. Moving forward, I explore his idea of the balance of nature and show that Lyell believes that natural equilibrium represents a state of stability in inorganic and organic nature. As I show, the stability of inorganic nature is achieved through the alternate activity of natural - aqueous and igneous - forces, while the balance of organic nature is established via two p…

Engaging with and Shaping Nature: A Nature-Based Intervention for Those with Mental Health and Behavioural Problems at the Westonbirt Arboretum in England.

Mental health problems have become one of the leading causes of disease burden worldwide. This study used qualitative mixed methods including in-situ 'being and doing' activities with participants, interviews, and participant observations to explore participant's experiences of a multi-visit nature-based intervention at Westonbirt Arboretum in England. The research found that three engagement types: (1) social, (2) woodland craft, and (3) creative and sensory, provided a meaningful programme to engage those with mental health, addiction, autism and behavioural problems. These types of engageme…

Design-Evolution Synergy Enables New-to-Nature Enzyme Chemistry.

Directed evolution and machine-learning-assisted evolution have transformed biocatalysis by enabling rapid optimisation of catalytic performance within compatible protein scaffolds. In parallel, advances in deep-learning-driven de novo protein design have expanded accessible protein architectural space, enabling the generation of functional catalysts for increasingly challenging transformations. We herein report a synergistic design-evolution strategy to encode new-to-nature regio- and enantioselective C-H amination reactions using engineered de novo haemproteins to synthesise chiral piperidin…

Fully synthetic, nature-inspired exosome-mimetics for melanoma therapy.

Fully synthetic exosome-mimetics (FSEMs) represent a nature-inspired drug delivery system designed to replicate the key physicochemical and biological properties of natural exosomes, while offering the potential to address limitations in scalability and reproducibility associated with natural exosomes. In this study, we prepared FSEMs at the laboratory scale. We loaded them with (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and microRNA-23a (miR-23a), aiming to co-deliver therapeutic small molecules and nucleic acids for the treatment of melanoma. FSEMs were fabricated using three methods: thin-film h…

Wetlands function as a nature-based microcystin remediation system.

As cyanobacterial blooms intensify globally, persistent microcystins (MCs) in surface waters present a growing water-quality challenge. Engineered solutions exist but are often costly and impractical for large-scale or natural settings. In contrast, wetlands, with their diverse microbial assemblages and habitats, offer a promising but underexplored pathway for MC removal. We tested this potential through in situ mesocosm experiments in two prairie wetlands; a hypereutrophic system receiving livestock and urban wastewater, and a less-impacted meso‑eutrophic site. Microcystin degradation was mea

Rethinking the Benign Nature of Class II Lupus Nephritis.

INTRODUCTION: Class II lupus nephritis (LN) is considered clinically benign, yet up to 50% of patients progress to more severe disease and no molecular characterization exists. We aimed to define the single-cell landscape of Class II LN and identify cellular and transcriptional features associated with kidney outcome. METHODS: We performed single-cell RNA sequencing on kidney biopsies from fifteen Class II LN patients (eight de novo, seven regressed from prior proliferative or membranous disease) and six healthy controls, integrated with 155 LN and 30 healthy-control samples from the Accelera

Nature of antireflux barrier formed by Nissen fundoplication surgery.

Nissen fundoplication is an effective surgical treatment for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease but the exact mechanism by which it works remains debatable. We determined the effects of Nissen (360° wrap) and Toupet (270° wrap) fundoplication on the esophagogastric junction (EGJ) pressure in response to distension of the stomach in an ex-vivo preparation of the porcine esophagus and stomach. The duodenal opening was sealed, and stomach cannulated for gas insufflation using a barostat device. The effect of gastric distension on the EGJ was measured, before and after fundoplication

Evolving Nature of Tuberculosis in the Post-pandemic World.

Introduction Tuberculosis (TB) and COVID-19 are highly transmissible respiratory diseases. The sequel of development of active TB after COVID-19 disease has been hypothesized to increase due to many reasons. We aimed to explore the association between COVID-19 infection, COVID-19 vaccination, and the development of active TB and navigate any existing patterns if present. Materials and methods This prospective observational study was conducted over a span of one year in two hospitals. A total of 200 patients with suspected TB were recruited and divided into two groups: Group A (n=100) had previ

The Nature and Nurture of Extracellular Vesicle-Mediated Signaling.

In the last decade, it has become clear that extracellular vesicles (EVs) are a ubiquitous component of living systems. These small membrane … teration of, receiving cells. We provide an overview of the inherent properties of EVs (i.e., their nature) as well as factors in the environment and receiving cell (i.e., nurture) that determine whether transmission of EV cargo leads to functional cellular responses. This review broadens the context for ruminating on EV functions and highlights the emer …

The complex nature of CXCR4 mutations in WHIM syndrome.

Heterozygous autosomal dominant mutations in the CXCR4 gene cause WHIM syndrome, a severe combined immunodeficiency disorder. The mutations primarily affect the C-terminal region of the CXCR4 chemokine receptor, specifically several potential phosphorylation sites critical for agonist (CXCL12)-mediated receptor internalization and desensitization. Mutant receptors have a prolonged residence time on the cell surface, leading to hyperactive signaling that is responsible for some of the symptoms of WHIM syndrome. Recent studies have shown that the situation is more complex than originally thought

Delusive Nature of Flip-Flop Sign Secondary to Histoplasmosis.

Histoplasmosis, caused by Histoplasma capsulatum, often mimics the appearance of lung cancer on fludeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) scans. The "flip-flop fungus," due to its similar presentation on imaging modalities, can lead to false-positive results and unnecessary invasive testing. We present a 46-year-old male patient with a lung nodule and bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy on an FDG-PET scan who initially presented with chest discomfort. Histoplasma infection was confirmed through Grocott's methenamine silver (GMS) stains on bronchoscopy-guided biopsy specimens. An ana

Quasispecies Nature of RNA Viruses: Lessons from the Past.

Viral quasispecies are distinct but closely related mutants formed by the disparity in viral genomes due to recombination, mutations, competition, and selection pressure. Theoretical derivation for the origin of a quasispecies is owed to the error-prone replication by polymerase and mutants of RNA replicators. Here, we briefly addressed the theoretical and mathematical origin of quasispecies and their dynamics. The impact of quasispecies for major salient human pathogens is reviewed. In the current global scenario, rapid changes in geographical landscapes favor the origin and selection of muta

Dual nature of mouse periderm structure, function and fate.

The periderm is the outer layer of embryonic skin, which is essential for the development of the epidermis and the establishment of its barrier function. In humans, the periderm is a monolayer and is shed prenatally. The structure and fate of the mouse periderm remain puzzling. Using electron microscopy of mouse skin between the embryonic day 14.5 and the postnatal Day 2, we have assessed the periderm structure and its shedding patterns. In contrast to human periderm, the mouse periderm appears to be bilayered, comprising a presumably absorptive outer periderm with numerous microvilli and an i

The Anticipatory and Task-Driven Nature of Visual Perception.

Humans have a remarkable capacity to arrange and rearrange perceptual input according to different categorizations. This begs the question whether the categorization is exclusively a higher visual or amodal process, or whether categorization processes influence early visual areas as well. To investigate this we scanned healthy participants in a magnetic resonance imaging scanner during a conceptual decision task in which participants had to answer questions about upcoming images of animals. Early visual cortices (V1 and V2) contained information about the current visual input, about the granul

Antivirals against Chikungunya Virus: Is the Solution in Nature?

The worldwide outbreaks of the chikungunya virus (CHIKV) in the last years demonstrated the need for studies to screen antivirals against CHIKV. The virus was first isolated in Tanzania in 1952 and was responsible for outbreaks in Africa and Southwest Asia in subsequent years. Between 2007 and 2014, some cases were documented in Europe and America. The infection is associated with low rates of death; however, it can progress to a chronic disease characterized by severe arthralgias in infected patients. This infection is also associated with Guillain-Barré syndrome. There is no specific antivir
