Avascular necrosis of the radial head is uncommon. A 20-year review of records at a Pediatric Trauma Center revealed eight cases of avascular necrosis of the radial head in children with an average of 10 years (range, 7-16 years). Symptoms of pain or restriction of elbow motion began at an average of 23 months after trauma in seven cases, and in one case, there was no history of trauma. Of the seven secondary to trauma, six resulted from a fall, and one from a torsional injury. The types of injuries associated with avascular necrosis of the radial head were two supracondylar fractures, a fract…

Isolated penile necrosis is a rare entity, its main causes are diabetes mellitus and chronic renal failure. Only two cases related with urethral catheterization have been published in the literature. We present a case of penile necrosis in a patient with a Foley catheter, the possible role of the catheter in the etiology and its management are discussed.

Allergic rhinitis affects approximately 40% of children. This study aimed at determining the prevalence, sociodemographic features, comorbid illnesses, complications and quality of life in children referred to the outpatient clinic of "Allergic Rhinitis" in Penteli Children Hospital, Athens, Greece. We analyzed 590 pediatric patients referred to the outpatient clinic of "Allergic Rhinitis" in Penteli Children Hospital, Athens, Greece from 26/01/2012 to 20/11/2022. Allergic rhinitis was recorded as the one and only allergic disease in 59% of the children diagnosed with allergic rhinitis, concom

Three cases of extravaginal torsion of the spermatic cord with infarct of the testicle in the newborn are presented. All three cases had acute fetal distress. They had in common being the products of multiparous women, born in a distocic fashion with a prolonged labor without prenatal control. One of the had a shoulder impaction with required forceps use. Two of them were delivered on vaginal way and the other one by cesarean section. In all three cases, torsion was present at birth. Diagnosis was made between third and fifth day of life; the clinical findings were: enlargement of the right sc

Metastatic fat necrosis is a form of lobular panniculitis which together with synovitis is an unusual complication of pancreatic disease. It can precede an attack of pancreatitis. Pancreatic disease should therefore be remembered as a cause of panniculitis. Serum amylase and abdominal ultrasonography should be considered to exclude pancreatic disease in cases of panniculitis of uncertain etiology. We describe a case of metastatic fat necrosis and discuss the appearance on magnetic resonance imaging.

A fatal case of fulminant hepatic failure that occurred in the neonatal period is reported in a premature infant born after 27 4/7-weeks' gestation. Immediately after birth the infant had severe hypoxia and hypotension resulting from birth asphyxia, hypovolemic shock, and septicemia. At autopsy, histological appearance of the liver showed virtually total hepatocellular necrosis without features of fibrosis. Although the exact cause of hepatocellular injury cannot be fully ascertained, it is assumed that hypoxia and hypotension must have been the predominant factors leading to massive hepatic n…

In neonates pontosubicular necrosis (PSN) is one of the patterns of acute brain injury, the sites of maximum damage being the basis pontis and the subiculum of the hippocampus. A retrospective clinical and pathological study was performed on 16 preterm and 2 term neonates with PSN and compared with 16 age-matched controls. The results indicated that hypocarbia of less than 20 mmHg was one of the important factors in the pathogenesis of PSN.

An unusual case of avascular necrosis of the talus secondary to chronic steroid usage is presented, along with a review of the literature. Etiologic factors as well as radiographic and clinical features will be discussed. Possible treatment alternatives will be reviewed. With greater knowledge of this pathologic process, prompt diagnosis may prevent its potentially harmful sequelae.

Ischemic necrosis is seen after both closed and open reduction. Its causes have been clarified during the last two decades. The position of the immobilized hip after reduction is an important factor; the method of reduction is another. There are other factors such as development of the epiphyseal nucleus and the degree of dislocation. In a collective series of 20 hospitals our study group on hip dysplasia investigated 3316 hip joints reduced by different techniques. It was shown that methods working with the Lorenz position of immobilization have an average rate of 27% ischemic necrosis. Lange…

Extensive hepatic necrosis was produced in rabbits 48 hr following infusion of a cardiopathogenic dose of norepinephrine (NE, 2 micrograms/kg/min for 90 min). Livers had necrotic areas of varying sizes and gross appearances. Histologically, the lesions were areas of varying sizes and gross appearances. Histologically, the lesions were areas of lytic-coagulative necrosis with massive mineralization by calcium. In addition, the serum glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT) was significantly elevated (P less than 0.001). Pretreatment with the alpha 1-adrenoceptor blocker prazosin (200 micrograms/kg…

We present a double-antibody radioimmunoassay for determination of the concentration of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) in serum. TNF in serum competes with a fixed amount of 125I-labeled TNF for the binding sites of specific rabbit antibodies. The bound TNF is precipitated with Sepharose-bound anti-rabbit IgG, then centrifuged, and the radioactivity of the pellets is counted. The detection limit of the assay is 7 ng/L (B0-3 SD). Bound radioactivity in the range of 10% to 90% of the B0 counts corresponds to TNF concentrations of 26 to 10,000 ng/L. Of 40 sera from healthy subjects, 21 (53%) contain…

A case of dyskeratosis congenita, a rare X-linked disorder, is presented. The patient had the classic triad of cutaneous findings: reticulated hyperpigmentation, nail dystrophy, and leukoplakia. In addition, a previously unreported finding developed, avascular necrosis of bone without systemic steroid therapy. Recognition of this disorder is important because pancytopenia and malignancy develop in up to 50 percent of patients.

Necrosis of the cecum occurs in various settings, including low-flow states. Cecal necrosis in two dialysis patients with documented, sustained hypotension is presented. Spontaneous left colon perforations, which have been previously reported in renal failure patients, were considered secondary to distention from constipation. The cecum may be more susceptible to ischemia than the remainder of the colon. Maximal distention develops at this point. With an associated low-flow state, in a possible watershed area, necrosis can occur. The diagnosis of cecal necrosis and perforation should be entert…

Cerebrocortical necrosis was induced through the oral application of amprolium to calves (0.250 g/kg to 1.00 g/kg) and weaned lambs and goats (1.25 g/kg) in the course of 25 to 35 days. In order to shed light on the etiology of the disease an experiment was carried out with a ration rich in carbohydrates for calves and sheep. Clinically, the disease was manifested with nervous symptoms. Biochemically, a drop of the amount of B1 in the blood serum, liver, and brain was established, along with a rise of pyruvic acid in the blood serum. Morphologically, most characteristic were the laminar necros…
