Endobronchial metastasis secondary to occulting renal cell carcinoma: literature review and a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Endobronchial Metastasis from extrathoracic tumors is a rare neoplasm that accounts for approximately 1.1% of total endobronchial malignancies. The most common primary tumors associated with EBM are from the colorectal, breast, and kidney regions. Although it represents a late manifestation in the context of tumor progression, it can rarely antedate the diagnosis of the primary tumor. CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-years-old male was referred from another city hospital to our thoracic surgery department due to a 4-months history of hemoptysis and productive cough. A chest X-ray and compu

Secondary tumours revealed during fine needle aspiration of the thyroid--analysis of prevalence and characteristics of ultrasound image.

INTRODUCTION: Metastases to the thyroid are revealed at autopsy with a frequency of 2-24%; however, clinically they appear less frequently, at 0.1-3%. The aim of the study was analysis of the frequency of revealing metastases to the thyroid (TM) and to the regional lymph nodes (NM) (neoplasms other than primary thyroid tumours) in preoperative diagnostics of the thyroid in patients with positive (C+) and negative (C-) history of cancer; analysis of ultrasound (US) images of metastases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Results of US/fine needle aspiration (FNA) of the thyroid in 1276 C+ patients and 18,9

Chondrosarcoma Involving the Ciliary Body and Choroid.

A 56-year-old man with a history of hereditary multiple exostoses and secondary low-grade chondrosarcomas was diagnosed with a pigmented mass in his left eye involving the inferonasal ciliary body and peripheral choroid following a superotemporal visual field defect. The intraocular mass continued to grow following brachytherapy, prompting enucleation that revealed a low-grade chondrosarcoma (CHS), similar in appearance to his prior skeletal neoplasms. There are 3 reports of CHS metastatic to the eye, and all 3 individuals had metastases to the lungs and other body sites before or at the time

Metastatic tumors to the urinary bladder: clinicopathologic study of 11 cases.

Secondary neoplasms of the urinary bladder are uncommon, with metastatic tumors being an even rarer event. The authors studied the clinicopathology of 11 cases of metastatic tumors to bladder, which were collected from their archives between 1995 and 2010. The most common metastases in this series were breast. Some unusual metastases, including several not being previously reported, were also presented, namely, ileal carcinoid tumor, ileal gastrointestinal stromal tumor, ovarian squamous carcinoma, pancreatic gastrinoma, and renal collecting duct carcinoma. Vast majority of these patients (10/

CARCINOID TUMORS.

Carcinoid tumors are diminutive growths found along the gastrointestinal tract, in the lungs and, occasionally, within the confines of teratomas. Carcinoid tumors of the intestinal tract are found in decreasing order of frequency in the rectum, the appendix, the ileum, the jejunum, the lung, the stomach and the duodenum. Arising from argentaffin elements in the crypts of Lieberkuehn, and secreting serotonin, carcinoid tumors belong to the order of functioning neoplasms. Their indolent growth seems to place them between benign neoplasms and carcinomas. However, they possess propensities for met

Renal epithelial hyperplastic and neoplastic proliferation in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

The early v late occurrence of tubular epithelial hyperplasia and the frequency and malignant potential of renal neoplasms in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) are controversial. The kidneys from 87 patients with documented or presumed ADPKD, removed at autopsy (n = 49) or prior to transplantation (n = 38), were thoroughly sectioned and examined. Hyperplastic polyps were found in 90.8% of the patients, even in the absence of renal insufficiency or marked renal enlargement. However, their number was significantly higher in the patients with advanced stages of the disease, and

Adenosquamous carcinoma of the sigmoid colon: a case report and review of literature.

Adenosquamous carcinoma of the colon consisting of both glandular and squamous histopathologic features is a rare colorectal neoplasm. Metastasis commonly occurs in right and transverse colon. A 71-year-old Caucasian man presented with a four-month history of intermittent rectal bleeding. Pathologic analysis of biopsy specimen revealed an adenosquamous carcinoma of sigmoid colon. Sigmoid resection with a proximal and distal resection was performed. Early detection and radical operation with other available therapeutic modalities may improve clinical outcome.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the parotid gland.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of salivary glands is a slow-growing malignant tumor, characterized by wide local infiltration, perineural spread, a propensity to local recurrence and late distant metastasis. Although ACC is the second most common malignant salivary gland neoplasm and constitutes approximately one-third of all salivary gland malignancies, it is relatively rare in parotid gland. Here, we present a case report of a cribriform type of ACC involving parotid salivary gland in a 66-year-old female.

Metastatic large intestinal adenocarcinoma in two rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Spontaneous colonic adenocarcinomas were diagnosed in two rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). Although both tumors caused partial obstruction of the colon, they were histologically different. One resembled the commonly described "napkin-ring" adenocarcinoma similar to those found in the descending and sigmoid colon of humans. The other neoplasm, a "tubular" lesion, invaded the full thickness of the colonic wall at the ileocecal-colonic junction. Both tumors were associated with metastasis, which is uncommon in the rhesus monkey.

Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma presenting with massive intracranial hemorrhage.

A 46-year-old woman presented with massive left temporal lobe intraparenchymal and diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage on CT. Lack of enhancement excluded intermediate and high-grade primary tumor or metastasis as likely causes. At surgery, a fibrovascular left temporal lobe mass adherent to the dura proved to be a pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma. The unusual hemorrhagic presentation of this typically benign entity is thought to be related to the meningeal involvement, which itself is characteristic of this neoplasm.

Metastatic mucinous adenocarcinoma from breast mimicking a pyogenic granuloma in the gingiva: a case report.

Mucin-producing adenocarcinomas (MAC) are an extremely rare, indistinct group of neoplasm having either a salivary gland origin or with prominent glandular component. The diagnosis is chiefly based on the histological aspect conjoined with immunohistochemical evaluation as clinico-radiographical features are non-specific. It can arise as a primary metastasis to soft tissues, most commonly from either lung, breast, kidney, or colon. This paper reports a 51-year-old woman with buccolingual gingival swelling having a final diagnosis of metastatic mucinous adenocarcinoma from the breast. A tissue

Extensive mucoepidermoid carcinoma-like differentiation in follicular carcinoma of the thyroid.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is a rare malignant thyroid neoplasm. Cases of MEC with papillary, insular, and anaplastic thyroid carcinoma have been reported. Here, we present a case of follicular carcinoma with extensive MEC-like differentiation. A 62-year-old female presented with complaint of thyroid swelling for 10 years. Cytological features were suggestive of follicular neoplasm. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed metastasis to lung and vertebrae. Salivary glands and breasts were normal on examination and imaging. Subtotal thyroidectomy with bilateral neck dissection surgery w

Thyroid spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like differentiation (SETTLE): case report and review.

Spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like element (SETTLE) is a rare malignant neoplasm of the thyroid, occurring predominantly in children, adolescents, and young adults. SETTLE usually presents itself as a thyroid mass, without metastases at diagnosis. It is believed to derive from branchial pouch or thymic remnant tissue showing primitive thymic differentiation. This article reports the clinical, cytological, histological and immunohistochemical features of a SETTLE in a 3-year-old girl. Microscopic exam revealed a nodular, highly cellular neoplasm displayed in the classic biphasic pattern,

Adrenocortical carcinoma with cerebral metastasis in a child: case report and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is rare in the pediatric population, and brain metastasis seldom occurs. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The authors report a case of metastatic ACC to the brain in a 9-year-old patient who had an adrenal cortex neoplasm removed at 4 years of age, and was free of symptoms for 5 years. Two weeks before admission she complained of blurred vision in both eyes. INTERVENTION: Examination revealed bilateral papilledema, and a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed a mass in the left lateral ventricle with extensive vasogenic edema and

Central nervous system metastases from breast carcinoma. A clinical and laboratorial study in 47 patients.

In this retrospective study, 47 patients with clinical diagnosis of central nervous system metastases of breast cancer were evaluated by computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination. The patients were divided in 2 groups: 1, without leptomeningeal neoplasm and 2, with leptomeningeal neoplasm. In the group 2, the time interval between the primary disease and the central nervous system metastasis as well as the survival time were shorter than in group 1 (40 and 4.3 months in group 2 versus 57 and 10 months respectively, in group 1). Clinicopathological consultation. Lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the larynx hypopharynx, and trachea.

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the larynx, hypopharynx, and trachea is a rare neoplasm composed of large, poorly differentiated, nonkeratinized cells intermingled with small nonneoplastic lymphocytes and plasma cells. It is histologically similar to its more common counterpart occurring in the nasopharynx. In contrast to nasopharyngeal carcinoma, most cases have not been associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), although rare cases have been reported to be EBV-positive. The diagnosis often requires immunohistochemistry or electron microscopy for confirmation. The neoplasm seems to behave in a f

Thyroid Langerhans cell histiocytosis concurrent with papillary thyroid carcinoma: A case report and literature review.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a clonal neoplasm of myeloid dendritic cells, rarely involving the thyroid gland. Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common histological subtype of thyroid cancer. We report a rare case of a 34-year-old Chinese woman who has LCH with PTC and cervical lymph node metastasis of LCH, with a review of the literature. The patient has thyroid nodules and cervical lymph node enlargement detected by neck ultrasound during physical examination. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) showed PTC with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and BRAF V600E mutation after th

Diffuse ocular metastases as an initial sign of metastatic lung cancer.

A 68-year-old man with lung carcinoma and no systemic metastasis presented with a blind, painful right eye. Examination showed no perception of light in the affected eye, elevated intraocular pressure, marked epibulbar hyperemia, and a white placoid mass in the conjunctiva nasally. Although a cataract precluded a clear view of the fundus, ultrasonography disclosed a total retinal detachment and a diffuse thickening of the choroid. Metastatic carcinoma was suspected clinically and the eye was enucleated because of severe, intractable pain. Pathologic examination demonstrated extensively necroti

Carcinoid tumors of the ileum.

Thirty patients with carcinoid tumors of the ileum over a recent 10-year period have been analyzed. Seventeen patients were symptomatic and 13 others were found to have tumors incidentally at autopsy or celiotomy. Patients with symptoms almost invariably had metastatic disease, yet preoperative diagnosis was rarely achieved. Arteriography in five patients with intestinal angina demonstrated encasement, kinking, and irregularity of mesenteric branches due to nodal metastasis. In five patients, each with liver metastasis, the classic carcinoid syndrome developed. Multiple primary carcinoid tumor
