OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the natural history of vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VAIN) and to identify risk factors for invasive vaginal carcinoma.
METHODS: The records of all women with VAIN diagnosed at military treatment facilities over a 10-year period with minimum follow-up of 12 months were reviewed. Patient demographics and clinical information related to the diagnosis and treatment of VAIN were recorded.

Essentially all squamous cervical cancers and their precursor lesions, high grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN2/3), are caused by persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. However, not all CIN2/3 lesions progress to cancer. A total of 532 women with established cervical HPV infection have been prospectively followed (without treatment) since 1981 for a mean of 45 (SD 21) months. Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin and melanoma are the rare progeny of precancerous lesions that usually remain stable or regress. Primary cardiac tumours in infants and children are extremely rare, with an estimated incidence of 0.2% according to echocardiographic studies. Owing to their rarity, there is very little literature available, and most knowledge is based on collections of case reports. Methotrexate (MTX), an antimetabolite targeting certain autoimmune conditions and various hematologic malignancies, has been associated with iatrogenic lymphoproliferative disease (LPD) primarily of B-cell lineage. However, studies in this area are scant and often include small samples, thus making it difficult to provide robust evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of this procedure.
