Primary myelofibrosis (PMF) is characterized by leukoerythroblastic anemia with circulating immature myeloid cells, including CD34+ cells, progressive splenomegaly and accumulation of connective tissue and neoangiogenesis in the bone marrow. Altered bone marrow stroma and cell adherence account for the egress of CD34+ cells from the bone marrow. Carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule (CEACAM) 6 has been implicated in cell adhesion, cellular invasiveness, angiogenesis, and inflammation, which are all key processes in the pathophysiology of PMF. Accordingly, CEACAMs may play an

Primary lymphoma of bone is a rare condition that has been described as a malignant neoplasm formed of lymphoid and myelopoetic tissues. Morphologic substrate is formed of lymphoid cells of different evolutional stages. Primary lymphoma of bone occurs predominantly in males; a male to female ratio is 1.8:1. It may occur at any age. The sites commonly affected are the long bones. In Lithuania 400 new cases of lymphoma are diagnosed every year. About 75% of them are non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Many histological types and subtypes of lymphoma exist. This variation leads to difficulties when reviewing

The neural crest is an important transient structure that develops during embryogenesis in vertebrates. Neural crest cells are multipotent progenitor cells that migrate and develop into a diverse range of cells and tissues throughout the body. Although neural crest cells originate from the ectoderm, they can differentiate into mesodermal-type or endodermal-type cells and tissues. Some of these tissues include the peripheral, autonomic, and enteric nervous systems; chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla; smooth muscles of the intracranial blood vessels; melanocytes of the skin; cartilage and b

Osteoblastomas are primary bone tumors with an affinity for the spine. They typically involve the posterior elements, although extension through the pedicles into the vertebral body is not uncommon. Histologically, they are usually indistinguishable from osteoid osteomas. However, there are different variants of osteoblastomas, with the more aggressive type causing more pronounced bone destruction, soft-tissue infiltration, and epidural extension. A bone scan is the most sensitive radiographic examination used to evaluate osteoblastomas. These osseous neoplasms usually present in the 2nd decad

Clinical and pathologic features of 24 patients with large cell lymphomas that expressed the activation antigen Ki-1 are described. Phenotypic and/or genotypic studies characterized these neoplasms as T-cell (16 cases), B-cell (six cases), or null cell (two cases) type. Males predominantly were affected. Age of patients ranged from 19 to 73 years, with a bimodal distribution, with peaks in the third and seventh decades. Lymphadenopathy was present in nearly all patients. Extranodal involvement, including skin, soft tissue, bone, central nervous system, lung, or small intestine was observed in

Patients referred to the authors' hospital for evaluation on suspicion of a bone or soft-tissue malignancy frequently present to the Orthopaedic Oncology Clinic with magnetic resonance (MR) images that show typical features of nonmalignant or nonneoplastic entities. The purpose of this article is to review the benign entities that may be mistaken by the radiologist for a malignancy and thus lead to needless referral to an orthopedic oncologist. Normal hematopoietic marrow and marrow edema due to a stress reaction may mimic a neoplasm at MR imaging, but knowledge of the typical patterns and loc

INTRODUCTION: Pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma (PHE) is a rare vascular neoplasm of intermediate malignant potential that predominantly affects young adult men and most frequently arises in the lower extremities. Involvement of unusual skeletal sites is uncommon, and the nonspecific imaging features of PHE may contribute to diagnostic uncertainty.
CASE REPORT: We report three cases of PHE involving unusual osseous locations, including the thoracic spine, femur, and humerus, with one case showing concomitant soft tissue involvement of the upper arm. Multimodal imaging, including computed to

The ultrastructural appearances of 7 primitive neuroepithelial tumours (PNETs) originating in soft tissues and bone are described. Three of the tumours represented primary soft tissue lesions, while locally recurrent tumour or pulmonary metastases were studied from the 4 skeletal tumours, all of which had been diagnosed previously as Ewing's sarcomas. Rosettes were present in one of the soft tissue lesions and although not seen in the primary skeletal neoplasms, they were identified by light microscopy (LM) in 2 of 3 pulmonary metastases, one of which had the morphology of a neuroepithelioma,

Rosai-Dorfman-Destombes histiocytosis is a rare histiocytosis characterized by an accumulation of histiocytes within the tissues. It is a heterogeneous entity with various clinical phenotypes: isolated lymph nodes, in association with extranodal involvement, autoimmune disease or neoplasm. These extra nodal lesions mainly affect the skin, the nasal cavity, orofacial sinuses, or are lytic bone lesions or even damage to the central nervous system. The diagnosis is histopathological. We present here the case of a histiocytosis of Rosai-Dorfman-Destombes in a 46-year-old patient with a lesion of t

Neurofibromatosis is a systemic hereditary disorder with varied manifestations in bone, soft tissue, the nervous system and skin. Cutaneous manifestations of neurofibromatosis are characterized by café-au-lait macules, multiple neurofibromas, Lisch nodules and intertriginous freckling. Some benign or malignant tumors such as juvenile xanthogranuloma, pheochromocytoma, and malignant melanoma can accompany neurofibromatosis. But, in the English literature, no case of eccrine spiradenoma associated with neurofibromatosis has been reported. Eccrine spiradenoma is a benign uncommon neoplasm of skin

Plasmacytomas are a localized proliferation of plasma cells in the bone marrow, and are less frequently seen in extraosseous organs or tissues. Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare malignant neoplasm, and is especially uncommon when it arises from the mediastinum. Here, we report on a case of posterior mediastinal extramedullary plasmacytoma in a 64-year-old man. He was admitted with an asymptomatic right apical mediastinal mass, which was provisionally diagnosed as a neurogenic mass. However, a subsequent investigation revealed that this tumor was a rare case of IgG kappa type extramedullary

Extramedullary plasmacytomas (EMPs) are localized plasma cell neoplasms that occur within the soft tissues; by definition they cannot occur within bone. They account for 1-2% of all plasma cell growths and have a great predilection for the upper respiratory tract, without specific manifestations. Males are more frequently affected during the fifth and sixth decades of life. At initial presentation, multiple myeloma should be excluded. We report herein the case of a 63-year-old man with an EMP arising in the right maxillary sinus who was referred for surgical excision and postoperative radiothe

Solitary plasmacytoma (SP) is an uncommon form of plasma cell neoplasm occurring intraosseously or in soft tissue and presents as a single mass of monoclonal plasma cells. SP in the maxillary sinus is rare and can be misdiagnosed as other maxillary sinus tumors. The essential examinations in patients with the initial diagnosis of plasmacytoma are bone marrow biopsy, serum and urine electrophoresis, and kappa/lambda ratio (κ:λ ratio) to rule out multiple myeloma (MM). Herein, a rare case of SP in the maxillary sinus treated by surgery and localized radiation is reported. At the 10-year follow-u

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare non-Langerhans histiocytosis and inflammatory myeloid neoplasm with poor prognosis. Symmetric long bone osteosclerosis occurs in nearly all patients, but other organs are often involved. Coronary artery involvement is rare, but was encountered in a patient who experienced angina. Radiologic presentation and histologic findings were consistent with diagnosis of ECD. A soft-tissue mass was found surrounding the right atrium, ascending aorta, and all branches of coronary artery. Interferon-alfa treatment was successful. In conclusion, we recommend coronary

The term mastocytosis designates a group of rare disorders characterized by typical skin lesions, frequently associated episodes of anaphylaxis, and clinical symptoms related to the release of various mediators. Dermatologists/allergists are frequently the first to establish the diagnosis. The condition is based on clonal mast cell proliferation, usually in the skin or bone marrow and only rarely in the gastrointestinal tract or other tissues. In general, mastocytosis has a good prognosis in terms of life expectancy. Rare variants - including mast cell leukemia, aggressive mastocytosis, and th

Ollier's disease, or multiple enchondromatosis, is a deforming dysplastic disease of cartilage, characterized by multiple, asymmetrically distributed intra-osseous cartilaginous masses in the metaphyses and diaphyses of bones. When associated with soft tissue hemangiomas it is referred to as Maffucci's syndrome, in which the enchondromatosis has no unilateral distribution. The emergence of malignant neoplasms, including gliomas, is a well-recognized complication in Maffucci's syndrome. We report a 28-year-old patient with a history of Ollier's disease, who developed two low-grade cerebral glio

The entity "pericytoma with t(7;12)" was described as a rare, distinct perivascular myoid neoplasm provisionally classified within the family of myopericytic tumors that demonstrates t(7;12)(p22;q13) translocation with resultant ACTB-GLI1 fusion and biologically was felt to behave in an indolent fashion. However, a recent study showed that tumors with this and similar translocations may have variable morphology and immunohistochemical phenotype with inconsistent myopericytic characteristics and a propensity for metastasis, raising questions regarding the most appropriate classification of thes

This paper presents the results of analyses of the incidence of malignant neoplasms in lung, liver, and bone and associated connective tissues among Mayak nuclear workers exposed to both internally incorporated plutonium and to external gamma radiation. The study cohort included 22,373 individuals employed at the reactors and radiochemical and plutonium production facilities of the Mayak nuclear complex during 1948-1982 and followed up to the end of 2004. All analyses were carried out by Poisson regression, and the doses used were derived using a recently available update of organ doses, Mayak

Chondrosarcomas are a group of malignant neoplasms with cartilaginous matrix production mostly found in flat and peripheral long bones. Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is one of the most unusual and rare histological variants of chondrosarcoma, with a distinct histopathological appearance and biologically aggressive behavior. The amount of cartilage in mesenchymal chondrosarcoma may be so abundant that it is easily found in random sections or so scarce that numerous sections are required to discover it. In such cases, it is tough to make an accurate diagnosis, which leads to a big dilemma for patho

Rabbits receiving intramuscular injections of VX-2 carcinoma cells in biceps femoris muscles developed rapidly progressive neoplastic growths at 14 to 21 days associated with a significant hypercalcemia. The biologic behavior of the VX-2 carcinoma was characterized by local infiltration and metastases to regional lymph nodes and lungs. No metastases to skeletal tissues were evident. Femora from intramuscularly injected rabbits had varying degrees of osteophytosis and lysis evident roentgenographically. Histopathologic evaluation of femoral sections revealed periosteal new bone growth, cortical
