BACKGROUND: Breast cancer liver metastases (BCLM) is a common cause of breast cancer-related death. The prognostic and predictive value of receptor expression and St Gallen classification is challenged by receptor status discordance in distant metastases. BACKGROUND/AIM: Total gastrectomy with splenectomy (TGS) is routinely performed in patients with type 4 or large type 3 gastric cancer (GC), which sometimes metastasize to splenic hilar lymph nodes (LNs). However, the indication for and significance of TGS remain controversial. This multicenter retrospective study aimed to evaluate the oncological feasibility of laparoscopic TGS (LTGS) in patients with advanced proximal GC.

Naevus of Ota is a dermal melanocytosis most commonly found in black or Asian skin and is usually a benign malformation, but with a low risk of melanoma. We describe a 32-year-old Caucasian man with an acquired naevus of Ota with subtle pigmentation, in which a melanocytic papule developed. The lesion, deceptively, had no clinically suspicious features, but investigation revealed an aggressive cutaneous malignant melanoma, extensive orbital ring melanocytosis and metastatic brain and subsequent liver disease.

Retinoblastoma represents the prototypic model for inherited cancers. The RB1 gene was the first tumor suppressor gene to be identified. Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), is an uncommon, progressive, cystic lung disease which predominantly affects young women of childbearing age. A 74-year-old Japanese man was admitted to our hospital with anemia, 4 years after a thymectomy for thymoma associated with myasthenia gravis. A diagnosis of sigmoid colon carcinoma was confirmed, followed by surgical resection. This case is presented to reinforce that physicians should bear in mind the possibility of extrathymic malignancies in patients with thymoma.
