BACKGROUND: Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML), a rare clonal hematopoietic stem cell disorder characterized by myelodysplastic syndrome and myeloproliferative neoplasms, has a generally poor prognosis, and easily progresses to acute myeloid leukemia. The simultaneous incidence of hematologic malignancies and solid tumors is extremely low, and CMML coinciding with lung malignancies is even rarer. Here, we report a case of CMML, with ASXL1 and EZH2 gene mutations, combined with non-small cell lung cancer (lung squamous cell carcinoma).
CASE SUMMARY: A 63-year-old male, suffering from tooth

Mammary tumors in sheep are exceedingly rare, with all reported cases being benign to noninvasive and slow growing. Here, we describe a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with widespread metastases presumptively arising from the mammary parenchyma in a 3.5-y-old ewe. Following a history of chronic mastitis and severe swelling of the udder, the udder was removed surgically and submitted for examination. Three weeks after surgery, because of poor prognosis, the animal was euthanized and autopsied. The udder had no cutaneous lesions but had parenchymal disorganization and extensive areas of necrosis d

BACKGROUND: Homeodomain-interacting protein kinase 2 (HIPK2) is responsible for a DNA damage response, centrally regulating p53. The aberrant HIPK2 expression is known to be involved in carcinogenesis in several malignancies. However, the correlation of HIPK2 expression along with progression of cutaneous epithelial neoplasm has not been investigated.
METHODS: Using immunohistochemistry and real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, we examined the correlation between HIPK2 and HIPK2-related protein expressions and the progression of some cutaneous epithelial neoplasms (i.e.,

PATIENT: A 55-year-old man was treated twice with local excision and crycoagulation for a recurrent limbal mass of the left eye. The original histologic diagnosis was squamous cell carcinoma. Three months after the last recurrence the globe was enucleated because of a spontaneous perforation at the corneoscleral limbus with iris prolapse. Histologic examination, including PAS and mucicarmine stains, revealed a mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the epibulbar conjunctiva with infiltration of the cornea, sclera, iris and ciliary body.
CONCLUSIONS: Examination of specially stained sections (e.g. with m

Although the association between high-risk (HR) subtypes of human papillomavirus (HPV) and oropharyngeal carcinoma (OC) is well established, the role and biologic significance of low-risk (LR) HPV in these tumors remains poorly understood. In this series, we present 4 OCs with LR-HPV positivity by in situ hybridization (ISH). The cases occurred in 3 males and 1 female with a mean age of 67.8 years. All tumors demonstrated a papillary/exophytic architecture, and 2 showed overt stromal invasion. Morphologically, the tumors exhibited a spectrum ranging from keratinizing neoplasms with relatively

Carcinosarcoma of the esophagus is a rare malignant neoplasm, predominantly affecting men in their seventh decade of life. While presenting symptoms and anatomic location of squamous cell and carcinosarcoma of the esophagus are similar, the latter often presents as a large intraluminal polypoid mass on barium esophagram. The more favorable prognosis associated with carcinosarcoma versus other esophageal neoplasms has been attributed to early onset of symptoms, resulting in prompt diagnosis, and a lower propensity for tumor invasion. We report the case of an elderly woman presenting with dyspha

BACKGROUND: Facial skin is characterized by high density of follicles. Facial neoplasms may present overlapping clinical and dermoscopic findings. Our goal was to evaluate and compare, via reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM), follicular involvement in facial neoplasms.
METHODS: We retrospectively searched our image database, between January 2008 and December 2020, for all facial lesions with (1) a standardized set of clinical, dermoscopic, and RCM images, and (2) a biopsy-proven diagnosis of lentigo maligna/lentigo maligna melanoma (LM/LMM, n = 39), basal cell carcinoma (BCC, n = 51), squam

BACKGROUND: Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid is an uncommon neoplasm, recently redefined as a variant of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC). It has a dismal prognosis, with most patients succumbing to the disease within the first year following diagnosis. Due to its rarity, there are no well-established treatment guidelines.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, we report a new case of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid. The patient underwent total thyroidectomy with recurrent lymph node dissection with rapid local recurrence in less than 6 months without adjuvant therap

Neoplasms in small ruminants are considered uncommon and their reported incidence is variable. The aims of this investigation were to characterize malignant skin neoplasms in adult goats reared in Sicily, Italy, and to evaluate potential correlations between gross and histopathology features of the tumours and signalment, tumour location and/or viral infections. A total of 75 malignant skin masses were examined. In selected animals with perineal masses (n = 28) virological and serological investigations on tissues and blood were also conducted. According to the histological features, the lesio

BACKGROUND: Cancer is currently among the three leading causes of death after solid organ transplantation and its incidence is increasing. Non-melanoma skin cancer - squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma - is the most common malignancy found in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). The incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer in KTRs has not been extensively studied in Portugal.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer in KTRs from the largest Portuguese kidney transplant unit; and to study risk factors for non-melanoma skin cancer.
METHODS: Retrospective ana

Cystic salivary gland cytology can be challenging due to the fact that a cystic mass can be the clinical presentation of both non-neoplastic and neoplastic conditions. Neoplastic lesions consist of both benign and malignant neoplasms. The cytomorphologic features of these entities can overlap and the cystic background may additionally contribute to the complexity of these lesions and their interpretation. Ancillary studies have been reported in several studies to be beneficial in further characterization of the cellular components and subsequent diagnosis of the cystic lesions of the salivary

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive treatment for non-melanoma skin cancer. However, PDT systems currently used clinically have limitations such as pain and superficial tissue penetration. The silicon phthalocyanine Pc 4 is a second-generation photosensitizer with peak absorption in the far red at 675 nm.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety and tolerability of topically applied Pc 4 followed by red light (Pc 4-PDT) in treating cutaneous neoplasms.
STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty three adults with a diagnosis of neoplasms including actinic keratoses, Bowen's disease

BACKGROUND: Survivin is a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis family of proteins implicated in the inhibition of apoptosis and cell cycle control, both crucial in the progression to malignancy. Survivin overexpression has been demonstrated in numerous malignancies including cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. To date, there are no studies evaluating the expression of survivin in sebaceous neoplasms.
METHODS: Immunohistochemical expression of survivin was evaluated in a total of 20 extraocular sebaceous neoplasms: sebaceous hyperplasia (SH, 8), sebaceous adenoma (SA, 8), and sebac

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma of the thymus is a rare thymic epithelial neoplasm that tends to widely metastasize at initial presentation. Because of its rarity, the optimal chemotherapeutic regimen remains uncertain. A gemcitabine and cisplatin regimen has shown promising efficacy in the treatment of other squamous cell carcinomas. We assessed the efficacy and toxicity of this regimen in patients with advanced thymic squamous cell carcinoma.
METHODS: Between January 2003 and December 2012, 13 patients with untreated or unresectable recurrent thymic squamous cell carcinomas, who were tr

Head and neck tumors account for roughly 3% of malignancies in the United States and about 90% of these tumors are squamous cell cancers. Neuroendocrine neoplasms arise from neural crest cells and are commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract. Neuroendocrine neoplasms arising from the head and neck tend to be rare. In this article, we present a rare case of human papilloma virus-associated poorly differentiated small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC). Our patient was a 62-year-old African American man who presented with worsening left-sided neck pain and swelling that started 3 months pri

NUT midline carcinomas (NMCs) are rare, poorly differentiated tumors with aggressive biological behavior and a characteristic molecular signature. Availability of NUT antibody has facilitated diagnosis of NMC without molecular testing. We report a series of head and neck NMCs diagnosed using NUT IHC at our institute, including one case with an unusual course. Immunohistochemistry for NUT was performed in nasal and sinonasal tumors with diagnoses of undifferentiated carcinoma, poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma and malignant neoplasm, not otherwise specified, to identify cases of NMC

Osseointegrated implants are now commonplace in contemporary dentistry. However, a number of complications can occur around dental implants, including peri-implantitis, maxillary sinusitis, osteomyelitis, and neoplasms. There have been several reports of a malignant neoplasm occurring adjacent to a dental implant. In this report, we describe 2 such cases. One case was that of a 75-year-old man with no previous history of malignant disease who developed a solitary plasmacytoma around a dental implant in the left posterior mandible, and the other was that of a 43-year-old man who was diagnosed w
