Certain cancer treatments have been linked to specific cardiovascular toxicities, including (but not limited to) cardiomyopathy, atrial fibrillation, arterial hypertension, and myocarditis. Radiation, anthracyclines, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (Her2)-directed therapies, fluoropyrimidines, platinums, tyrosine kinase inhibitors and proteasome inhibitors, immune checkpoint inhibitors, and chimeric antigen-presenting (CAR)-T cell therapy can all cause cardiovascular side effects. Management of cardiovascular dysfunction that occurs during cancer therapy often requires temporary or pe

BACKGROUND/AIM: Hoffa's disease is anterior knee pain presumably stemming from inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia of the infrapatellar fat pad (Hoffa's pad). The etiology and pathogenesis are unclear, however, and no genetic information about the disease has been published. We report the genetic findings in cells from the fat pad of a patient with Hoffa's disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Infrapatellar fat pad cells from a patient with Hoffa's disease were examined using cytogenetic, RNA sequencing, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, and Sanger sequencing techniques.
RESULTS: Cytog

Background: Glioma stem cells (GSCs) are a key factor in glioblastoma (GBM) development and treatment resistance. GSCs can be divided into the mesenchymal (MES) and proneural (PN) subtypes, and these two subtypes of GSCs can undergo interconversion under certain conditions. MES GSCs have higher malignancy and radioresistance and are closely associated with an immunosuppressive microenvironment. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a broad role in GBM, while the role of GSCs subtype remains unknown. Methods: We performed RNA sequencing to explore the lncRNA expression profile in MES- and PN-subty

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive primary brain tumour in adults, characterised by rapid progression, extensive heterogeneity, and poor outcomes despite surgery, radiotherapy, and temozolomide (TMZ). A subpopulation of glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs) with self-renewal and multi-lineage differentiation capabilities drives tumour initiation, progression, recurrence, and therapeutic resistance. GSCs evade conventional treatments via enhanced DNA repair, multidrug efflux, activation of survival pathways, epigenetic reprogramming, and entry into quiescent states. Moreover, these cells utilis

Glioblastoma (GBM) is recognized as the most aggressive and lethal form of primary brain tumor, characterized by rapid proliferation and significant resistance to conventional therapies. Recent studies have illuminated the complex role of Neural Stem Cells (NSCs) in both the progression and treatment of GBM. This review examines the specific molecular pathways influenced by NSCs, focusing on critical signaling cascades such as Notch, P13K, and SHH, which are implicated in tumor development and maintenance. Furthermore, we explore the dual role of NSCs in glioblastoma, where they can act as bot

Tissue-specific (or somatic) stem cells constitute a subset of cells residing in normal adult tissues. By undergoing asymmetric division, they retain their ability to self-renew while producing daughter cells that go on to differentiate and play a role in tissue regeneration and repair. The human uterus consists primarily of endometrium and myometrium (the smooth muscle layer) that rapidly enlarges through its tremendous regenerative and remodeling capacity to accommodate the developing fetus. Such uterine enlargement and remodeling can take place repeatedly and cyclically over the course of a

The effect of deoxycytidine (dCyd) on the inhibitory effects of two antileukemic nucleoside analogs, 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine and ara-5-aza-Cyd, toward the clonogenic growth of normal human bone marrow progenitors (CFU-GM) and leukemic blast progenitors (L-CFU) was examined. Continuous exposure of cells to 10(-6)-10(-5) M 5-aza-deoxycytidine or 10(-5)-5 x 10(-5) M ara-5-aza-Cyd in conjunction with a 10- 100-fold excess of dCyd resulted in significantly greater restoration of CFU-GM growth than L-CFU colony formation at each dose relationship. Normal bone marrow mononuclear cells exposed to 10(-3

Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS) is a pediatric sarcoma that typically occurs in older children predominantly arising in the trunk and extremities, and exhibits a worse prognosis than other types of rhabdomyosarcomas. Most ARMS tumors have t(2; 13) or t(1; 13) translocations, involving PAX3-FKHR and PAX7-FKHR fusion genes, respectively. These genetic events result in a molecular gain of function of the fusion protein which is proposed, in a yet unspecified mechanism, to perturb the differentiation of muscle progenitor cells. While a significant amount of work has been done characterizing PAX-F

UNLABELLED: Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) is a clonal myeloproliferative disorder characterized by the presence of a fusion oncogene BCR-ABL, which encodes a protein with constitutive TK activity. The implementation of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) marked a major advance in CML therapy; however, there are problems with current treatment. For example, relapse occurs when these drugs are discontinued in the majority of patients who have achieved a complete molecular response on TKI and these agents are less effective in patients with mutations in the BCR-ABL kinase domain. Importantly, TKI

EL4 murine lymphoma cells and F9 murine teratocarcinoma cells undergo apoptosis-like cell death after exposure to ionizing radiation. Apoptosis differs in several ways from classical clonogenic cell killing by radiation. We have tested several modifiers and radiomimetic agents in an effort to determine if the mechanism of induction of apoptosis by radiation differs from the mechanism of classical clonogenic cell killing by radiation, and consequently that these two end points of radiation action might be differentially modifiable. We found that internucleosomal DNA fragmentation, characteristi

Autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) is the standard therapy for patients with transplant-eligible multiple myeloma (TEMM). However, the ideal depth of response required before ASCT and the impact of residual tumor cells in the stem cell collection (SCC) on survival remains unclear. Here we collected data of 89 patients with TEMM undergoing ASCT and analyzed the minimal residual disease of SCC (cMRD) and bone marrow (BM) (mMRD) before transplantation. Before ASCT, 31.5% and 76.4% of patients achieved MRD negativity in BM and SCC, respectively. Tumor cells were less in SCC samples than t

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive and lethal primary glial brain tumor. It has an unfavorable prognosis and relatively ineffective treatment protocols, with the median survival of patients being ~15 months. Tumor resistance to treatment is associated with its cancer stem cells (CSCs). At present, there is no medication or technologies that have the ability to completely eradicate CSCs, and immunotherapy (IT) is only able to prolong the patient's life. The present review aimed to investigate systemic solutions for issues associated with immunosuppression, such as ineffective

Autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT) appears to offer clinical benefit to leukemia patients, but the major reason for failure is relapse. This may be related to the presence of residual leukemic cells in the harvested marrow. To circumvent this problem, various procedures have been developed to purge ex vivo residual leukemic cells from the marrow. The alkyl-lysophospholipids are a new group of anticancer drugs that target membranes as their major site of action. They are unique in that they are relatively selectively toxic to neoplastic cells and spare normal marrow stem cells and pr

Anti-SOX1 antibodies are associated with diverse neurological syndromes, targeting both the central (paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration) and peripheral nervous systems (Lambert Eaton myasthenic syndrome, paraneoplastic neuropathy). Although the pathogenic role of these antibodies remains unclear, their strong association with underlying neoplastic disease (mainly small-cell lung cancer) has designated them as onconeural antibodies. Here, we present a case of cerebellar ataxia with marked photophobia, with severe atrophy of the cerebellum and brain stem, associated with anti-SOX1 antibodies

OBJECTIVE: To screen and analyze the micro-Ribonucleic Acid (miRNA) expression profile in B lymphocytes from patients with autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) using high-throughput sequencing.
METHODS: Twelve patients with warm autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (wAIHA) and twelve healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. CD19+ B lymphocytes were isolated and purified using magnetic activated cell sorting (MACS). RNA was subsequently extracted from these cells and a small RNA library was created. The miRNA expression profile was analyzed using Beijing Genomics Institute Sequencing 500 (BGISEQ-500), a

Cholesterol (CHOL) is a multifaceted lipid molecule. It is an essential structural component of cell membranes, where it cooperates in regulating the intracellular trafficking and signaling pathways. Additionally, it serves as a precursor for vital biomolecules, including steroid hormones, isoprenoids, vitamin D, and bile acids. Although CHOL is normally uptaken from the bloodstream, cells can synthesize it de novo in response to an increased requirement due to physiological tissue remodeling or abnormal proliferation, such as in cancer. Cumulating evidence indicated that increased CHOL biosyn

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) and circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are pivotal contributors to tumor progression, metastasis, and therapeutic resistance. However, their effective eradication remains a significant hurdle in cancer treatments. Here, we report a mechanically optimized drug delivery platform based on ginsenoside Rh2-engineered tumor cell-derived microparticles (MP) loaded with doxorubicin (D@RM) for targeted elimination of CSCs and CTCs. Rh2 incorporation into MP modulates membrane lipid composition and disrupts lipid raft integrity, significantly reducing particle stiffness and enhancin
