Cognitive control refers to our ability to choose courses of thought and action that achieve our goals over habitual but contextually inappropriate ones. Hierarchical control problems are those in which multiple goals or contextual contingency must be managed at once and related to one another. In the open-ended complexity of the real world, hierarchical control arguably characterizes most of the problems faced by our control systems. And, it is these cases of hierarchical control where patients with damage to executive systems are most apt to fail, even those that perform well on simplified l

We have witnessed an accelerated growth of photonics technologies in recent years to enable not only monitoring the activity of specific neurons, while animals are performing certain types of behavior, but also testing whether specific cells, circuits, and regions are sufficient or necessary for initiating, maintaining, or altering this or that behavior. Compared to other sensory systems, however, such as the visual or olfactory system, photonics applications in pain research are only beginning to emerge. One reason pain studies have lagged behind is that many of the techniques originally deve

Although the mammillary bodies were one of the first neural structures to be implicated in memory, it has long been assumed that their main function was to act primarily as a hippocampal relay, passing information on to the anterior thalamic nuclei and from there to the cingulate cortex. This view not only afforded the mammillary bodies no independent role in memory, it also neglected the potential significance of other, nonhippocampal, inputs to the mammillary bodies. Recent advances have transformed the picture, revealing that projections from the tegmental nuclei of Gudden, and not the hipp

Focal dystonias such as writer's cramp or blepharospasm are treatable with botulinum toxin injections and medications, but both therapies provide largely symptomatic relief. Because the basic abnormality in dystonia is at the synaptic level, brain modulating therapies with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) may well be able to produce lasting clinical improvement. Low-frequency threshold or subthreshold rTMS over the premotor cortex or anterior cingulate cortex, for hand dystonia and blepharospasm, respectively, could in the future become a more curative treatment, perhaps in

Human cognitive brain mapping is at a crossroads. On the one hand, it can access a rich data set of synaptic connectivity in the cerebral cortex of the monkey, an animal that lacks many of the complicated behaviors of interest. On the other hand, it is rapidly amassing an even richer data set on the functional map of the human cerebral cortex, but with relatively little hard data on underlying structural connectivity. This second point tends to be blurred in the current literature because of the multiple ways in which the term 'connection' is used in the context of the human brain. In some ins

Clinical manifestations of movement disorders, such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and dystonia, arise from neurophysiological changes within the cortico-striato-pallidothalamocortical (CSPTC) and cerebello-thalamo-cortical (CbTC) circuits. Neuroimaging techniques that probe connectivity within these circuits can be used to understand how these disorders develop as well as identify potential targets for medical and surgical therapies. Indeed, network analysis of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) has identified abnormal metabolic networks associated with the cardina

Because neurotropic viruses naturally traverse neural pathways, they are extremely valuable for elucidating neural circuits. Naturally occurring herpes and rabies viruses have been used for transneuronal circuit tracing for decades. Depending on the type of virus and strain, virus can travel preferentially in the anterograde or the retrograde direction. More recently, genetic modifications have allowed for many improvements. These include: reduced pathogenicity; addition of marker genes; control of synaptic spread; pseudotyping for infection of selected cells; addition of ancillary genetic ele…

OBJECTIVE: To report the case of an 85-year-old man with asymptomatic massive hypertriglyceridemia (MHTG).
CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION: Our case was a non-smoker, healthy 85-year-old Caucasian male, with no excessive alcohol intake and no evidence of an excessive sedentary lifestyle, body mass index = 23.2 kg/m(2), BP = 125/85 mm Hg and plasma triglyceride (TG) >1,000 mg/dl. The MHTG was an incidental finding at the age of 70. He had no cardiovascular disease, xanthomas, xanthelasmas or keratic precipitate. During the last 15 years, his average TG plasma levels showed a significant

Previous studies often considered the basilar pontine nuclei (BPN) and the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis (NRTP) as relays of a single cerebro-(ponto)-cerebellar pathway. Conversely, the different cortical afferences to the BPN and the NRTP, as well as the anatomical and functional features of the cerebellopetal projections from these pontine nuclei, support the different, and for some aspect, complementary arrangement of the cerebrocerebellar pathways relayed by the BPN or NRTP. Both the BPN and the NRTP are innervated from the cerebral cortex, but with regional prevalence. The NRTP is p

The fluorescent carbocyanine dye 1,1'-dioctadecyl 3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI) was used in fixed tissue to comprehensively analyze the connections of the olfactory bulbs and the different regions of the ventral (V) area of the telencephalic lobes (subpallium) of the rainbow trout. With this goal, DiI was applied to the different telencephalic nuclei and zones, as well as to the olfactory nerve, the olfactory bulb, the retina, and to several structures in the diencephalon and brainstem of juvenile trout. The olfactory bulbs maintain reciprocal connections with several

Discrete pathological lesions, which include extracellular protein deposits, intracellular inclusions and changes in cell morphology, occur in the brain in the majority of neurodegenerative disorders. These lesions are not randomly distributed in the brain but exhibit a spatial pattern, that is, a departure from randomness towards regularity or clustering. The spatial pattern of a lesion may reflect pathological processes affecting particular neuroanatomical structures and, therefore, studies of spatial pattern may help to elucidate the pathogenesis of a lesion and of the disorders themselves.

The rat occipital cortex contains a number of morphologically and physiologically distinct visual areas. Retrograde tracing studies have shown that most if not all of these areas project in a topographic fashion to the ipsilateral superior colliculus (SC). In the present study, small amounts of wheat germ agglutinin-conjugated HRP (WGA-HRP) were injected into adult rat occipital cortex to determine how afferents from the different visual cortical areas are distributed within the various layers of the SC. Cytoarchitectonic criteria were used to help establish the location of the WGA-HRP injecti

In recent years the role of the area postrema in the emetic reflex has been predominant and the involvement of the abdominal visceral innervation has tended to be overlooked. This paper attempts to redress the balance reflex by reviewing aspects of the existing literature and complementing this with original studies from the ferret. In view of the widespread use of the ferret in studies of emesis and particularly in the characterization of the antiemetic actions of 5-HT3 receptor antagonist, the opportunity is taken to assess the suitability of this species for studies of emesis. It is conclud

The clinical disturbance resulting from section of the sympathetic in the neck; miosis, decreased sweating, increased vascularity and narrowing of the palpebral fissure is universally recognized while the definitive sympathetic pathways remain unknown. Most current texts depict a plexus along the surface of the parasellar carotid as part of that pathway although a previous review leaves the large connection of the carotid sympathetic to the sixth and then to the first division of the fifth cranial nerve as a putative pathway. Recent reports of complete tears of the parasellar carotid without s

In commenting on the discovery of "opiate" receptors, Goldstein (1976) said: "It seemed unlikely, a priori, that such highly stereospecific receptors should have been developed by nature to interact with alkaloids from the opium poppy" (p. 1081). Endogenous opioid peptides and opioid receptor systems have now been identified in invertebrates that are unlikely to have had ancestors exposed to opium poppies (Kavaliers et al., 1983; Kream et al., 1980; Leung and Stefano, 1984; Stefano et al., 1980). Moreover, endogenous opioids play a role in stress-induced feeding in the slug (Kavaliers and Hirs

Olivocerebellar projections to the uvula were studied by means of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in pigmented rabbits. The distribution pattern of labeled cells in the inferior olive was compared among cases following large- and microinjections of HRP into the uvula. Findings indicate topographically organized projections to longitudinally oriented zones. There are at least 6 zones in the rabbit's uvula. The caudal part of the nucleus beta projects contralaterally to a most medially located zone (caudal beta zone). The rostral part of the nucleus beta projects to a

1. Extracellular microelectrode recordings were made from single spinocervical tract (SCT) neurones in the lumbosacral spinal cord of cats anaesthetized with chloralose and paralysed with gallamine triethiodide. 2. Pairs of air-jet stimuli, 60 ms in duration, were used to investigate in-field afferent inhibition in SCT cells. One jet was used to condition the responses to another jet located at a different position within the excitatory receptive field and occurring at times from 100 to 1800 ms later. Fifteen neurones were tested and significant in-field inhibition was observed in all of them.

In the present study, we used an innovative music-rest interleaved fMRI paradigm to investigate the neural correlates of tinnitus distress. Tinnitus is a poorly-understood hearing disorder where individuals perceive sounds, in the absence of an external source. Although the great majority of individuals habituate to chronic tinnitus and report few symptoms, a minority report debilitating distress and annoyance. Prior research suggests that a diverse set of brain regions, including the attention, the salience, and the limbic networks, play key roles in mediating both the perception of tinnitus
