A 13-year-old girl presented with features of intestinal obstruction. At surgery, the terminal 25 cm of ileum, which was resected along with the right colon, showed plexiform neurofibromatosis of the serosa and mesentery, hyperplastic submucosal and myenteric nerve plexuses and proliferation of neural tissue in the lamina propria, which manifested as diffuse polyposis of the ileal mucosa. The patient had a single inconspicuous external neurofibroma and a few café-au-lait spots on the back.

A 16-year-old young male experienced persistent headache, and brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed an abnormal mass with calcification in the right temporal lobe of the cerebrum. The tumor was located in the leptomeninges and cerebral cortex. In the leptomeninges, multiple calcified-fibrous nodules were noted. In this area spindle-shaped cells were arranged in a fascicular or storiform pattern. A few meningioma-like nodules were also present. With continuity of this leptomeningeal lesion, a diffuse infiltrative lesion composed of proliferating perivascular cells and

Presentation of a case of a "central type" neurofibromatosis in a 56-year old woman, clinically diagnosed erroneously as multiple sclerosis with a 20 years long course. Disturbances of hearing, walking, sight, sensitivity, incontinentia, intracranial hypertension and headache represented the main symptoms. More than 120 intracranial and tens of intraspinal meningiomas represented the leading postmortem finding. In a lesser frequency spinal plexiform neurofibromas and schwannomas were also found. The death was attributed to aspiration purulent bronchopneumonia. Various types of meningioma were

Neurofibromatosis is an autosomal dominant genetic disease, characterized by café au lait spots, neurofibromas and several bony anomalies. Deformities of the spine are the most frequent alterations. Involvement of the cervical spine has been studied less frequently. The case of a 16-year-old male patient affected by neurofibromatosis, with cervical pain without neurological symptoms is presented. X-rays, CT-scan and MRI demonstrated the presence of cervical kyphosis, occipitoaxial instability and atlantoaxial instability with subluxation. Posterior occipito-C2 fusion was performed with prior p

Familial angiolipomatosis is a rare syndrome that may be confused clinically with neurofibromatosis type 1. This condition is most often inherited in an autosomal recessive manner; however, several reports have been published suggesting an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. Angiolipomatosis, although somewhat disfiguring, is a benign condition with no known association with malignant neoplasms. This is in contradistinction to neurofibromatosis, an autosomal dominant syndrome associated with a myriad of benign and malignant neoplasms. It is, therefore, important to discriminate this entity

Gastrointestinal involvement of neurofibromatosis occurs in as many as 25 percent of cases. Neurofibroma occurs most frequently in the stomach and jejunum, but the colon may also be involved. This condition is characterized by multiple submucosal neurofibromas of the gastrointestinal tract and café au lait pigmentation, bony abnormalities, and neurofibromas of both central and peripheral nerves. The lesions consist of an overgrowth of neural tissue along with other mesenchymal elements. Gastrointestinal neurofibromas may cause occult bleeding, luminal obstruction, or intussusception. BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis involving the female genital tract is unusual. The vulva appears to be most frequently affected, with only rare reports of vaginal, cervical, and ovarian involvement in patients with known von Recklinghausen's disease.
CASE: We present a case of diffuse neurofibromatosis involving the cervix, endometrium, myometrium, ovarian cortex, and serosa in a patient with uncontrollable pelvic pain, diagnosed initially as endometriosis. No gross pathology was appreciated, and the histologic features of the small lesions were consistent with plexiform neurofibromas.

A case of 56-year-old male with sarcomatosis of leptomeninges as well as of the brain and spinal cord coexisting with Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis is presented. Neurological and neurophysiological symptoms of the disease resembled those of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Patient died 7 months after onset of the initial symptoms. The post-mortem examination revealed neoplastic infiltration of the leptomeninges of brain and spinal cord. Histologically sarcomatosis of the leptomeninges was diagnosed and immunohistochemical analysis of the neoplastic infiltrates can indicate fibrohistio

Patients with schwannomatosis (SWN) develop multiple tumors, called schwannomas, along peripheral nerves, with most experiencing significant pain. Neuropathic, nociceptive, and inflammatory pain types have been reported, but many patients describe severe pain when a schwannoma is palpated or lightly touched. Currently, surgical removal is the only effective treatment for pain relief. We are investigating mechanisms of tumor-induced pain. In some cases, schwannoma growth increases pressure on nearby nerves, resulting in pain. Additionally, schwannoma cells in culture secrete proinflammatory cyt

The purpose of this study was to analyze secondary resiliency and user experience outcomes from a novel, 8-week website-based mind-body intervention (NF-Web) for adults (18+) with neurofibromatosis (NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis), a genetic, neurocutaneous disorder characterized by nerve sheath tumors of the central and peripheral nervous system. The study design was a secondary data analysis of a single-arm, early feasibility pilot study (September 2020-May 2021) for adults with NF (N = 28). Across participants, the mean age was 46 (SD = 13.67) and included 22 females and 6 males. Participant

BACKGROUND Neurofibromatosis 1 is a neurocutaneous disorder with multisystemic manifestations. When patients are lacking overt cutaneous manifestations, diagnosis may be delayed and may complicate diagnosis and management of atypical presentations of this disease. It is thus important to strive to obtain relevant and/or complete history to arrive at the appropriate diagnosis. Furthermore, maintaining an index of suspicion in cases of vague abdominal pain may guide the clinician in establishing the correct diagnosis of mesenteric plexiform neurofibroma in the setting of known/presumed neurofibr

BACKGROUND: Multiple spinal cord tumors in a single patient are very rare and most often seen in cases of neurofibromatosis and associated disorders. Schwannomatosis, which is characterized by the development of multiple schwannomas without vestibular schwannomas, has been newly defined as a distinct form of neurofibromatosis. The purpose of the present study was to describe and review the clinical and radiological features and the management of patients with multiple spinal schwannomas without vestibular schwannomas.
METHODS: Between 1986 and 2016, 19 patients with multiple spinal schwannoma

Biallelic germline mismatch repair (MMR) gene (MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, and PMS2) mutations are an extremely rare event that causes constitutional mismatch repair deficiency (CMMRD) syndrome. CMMRD is underdiagnosed and often debuts with pediatric malignant brain tumors. A high degree of clinical awareness of the CMMRD phenotype is needed to identify new cases. Immunohistochemical (IHC) assessment of MMR protein expression and analysis of microsatellite instability (MSI) are the first tools with which to initiate the study of this syndrome in solid malignancies. MMR IHC shows a hallmark pattern with

BACKGROUND: 17q11.2 microdeletions, which include the neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) gene region, are responsible for the NF1 microdeletion syndrome, observed in 4.2% of all NF1 patients. Large deletions of the NF1 gene and its flanking regions are associated with a more severe NF1 phenotype than the NF1 general population.
CASE PRESENTATION: We hereby describe the clinical and molecular features of two girls (aged 2 and 4 years, respectively), with non-mosaic atypical deletions. Patient 1 showed fifteen café-au-lait spots and axillary freckling, as well as a Lisch nodule in the left eye, str

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis is common and presents with variable penetrance and manifestations in one in 2500 to one in 3000 live births. The management of these patients is often multidisciplinary because of the complexity of the disease. Plastic surgeons are frequently involved in the surgical management of patients with head and neck involvement.
METHODS: A 20-year retrospective review of patients treated surgically for head and neck neurofibroma was performed. Patients were identified according to International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision codes for neurofibromatosis and f

BACKGROUND: Familial spinal neurofibromatosis is a form of neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1), consisting of extensive, symmetrical, histologically proven, multiple neurofibromas of the spinal roots at every level and of all major peripheral nerves sometimes associated with typical NF1 stigmata; most cases underlie NF1 gene mutations.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study are (1) to report the findings in a set of 16-year-old monozygotic twin girls and a 14-year-old boy and (2) to review the existing literature.
METHODS AND RESULTS: In this article, we report the cases of three children who (1) ha
