The Sleepless Watch: Perceived Sleep Quality of Nurses Working in High-Intensity Settings.

BACKGROUND: Poor sleep quality is a global health concern among nurses, particularly in high-intensity settings. Unpredictable workloads, extended shifts and high patient acuity compromise sleep quality, negatively affecting nurses' well-being and patient outcomes. AIM: To describe the perceived sleep quality of nurses working in high-intensity settings. STUDY DESIGN: A qualitative descriptive design was used. Purposive sampling was used to select participants who met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected through three semi-structured focus group discussions with 21 nurses working in h

The WOC nurse in home care.

Visiting nurses have provided care to people in their homes for more than a century. Although their role has changed dramatically during the past 100 years, home care nurses remain committed to the key principle of promoting health and welfare while sustaining the values of patient and the home. Patients referred for home care today have increasingly complex and extensive needs. Financial constraints imposed by the government and insurance carriers have accelerated the need for efficiency and excellence in communication, coordination of care, and management of these patients. The WOC/ET nurse

Male catheterization and the extended role of the female nurse.

Although the incidence of long-term catheterization has declined in recent years, catheterized patients still require care to be provided by competent practitioners, regardless of their gender. Custom and tradition decreed that male catheterization was carried out by male nurses and doctors. Myth, misunderstanding and misbelief can perpetuate the notion that it is inappropriate for a female nurse to catheterize a male patient. However, the advent of the autonomous practitioner and a move from extended to an expanded role provides an opportunity for improved care of the catheterized male patien

Role of Health Care Professionals in the Success of Blood Pressure Control Interventions in Patients With Hypertension: A Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Globally, only 13.8% of patients with hypertension have their blood pressure (BP) controlled. Trials testing interventions to overcome barriers to BP control have produced mixed results. Type of health care professional delivering the intervention may play an important role in intervention success. The goal of this meta-analysis is to determine which health care professionals are most effective at delivering BP reduction interventions. METHODS: We searched Medline and Embase (until December 2023) for randomized controlled trials of interventions targeting barriers to hypertension

HIV infection in U.S. correctional systems: its effect on the community.

Increased rates of HIV infection and risk-taking behaviors among incarcerated men and women make the fight against HIV within the prison and jail systems an especially critical issue in community health. Overcrowded conditions impact on the rotation of inmates in and out of the correctional system. This revolving door phenomenon has implications for disease prevention and control within the community into which the inmates are released. As more people pass in and out of jails and prisons, more problems and diseases associated with incarceration pass into the community. The special needs of the

The Coppin Academy for Pre-Nursing Success: a model for the recruitment and retention of minority students.

There is a clearly documented need for greater minority representation in professional nursing as the nation grows more diversified. Increasing the ranks of minority nurses will assist both in alleviating the nursing shortage and in addressing the health care disparities that plague our healthcare systems. One barrier has been the recruitment and retention of underserved minority nursing students. To address this, the Coppin State University Helene Fuld School of Nursing (HFSON) in Baltimore, Maryland developed and implemented the "Coppin Academy for Pre-Nursing Success" (CAPS), a comprehensiv

The Nebraska experience in biocontainment patient care.

Public health nurses in local health departments may receive the first call regarding a potential case of avian influenza, monkeypox, or viral hemorrhagic fever. One public health approach to containing these dangerous infectious disease outbreaks is the use of specialized isolation units. Early access to a biocontainment patient care unit (BPCU) for isolation during a bioterrorism or public health emergency event along with appropriate use of epidemiological and therapeutic interventions in the community may dramatically impact the size and severity of a disease outbreak (Smith et al., 2006).

Rural School Nurses Face Challenges in Colorado: A Qualitative Study.

Rural school nurses are on the front lines of providing health care for children and families in rural Colorado, but there is little research from their perspective. To fill this gap, a descriptive phenomenological study examined the experiences of nine rural school nurses through in-person audiotaped interviews. Analysis of data revealed three main themes: (1) rural school nurses' efforts to meet students' extensive physical and mental health issues, (2) school nurses struggle to help rural students in extreme poverty, and (3) communication challenges experienced by rural school nurses. The f

Caring for the Rapidly Aging Incarcerated Population: The Role of Policy.

The population of incarcerated adults in the United States is aging rapidly. Incarcerated adults experience accelerated aging, the process in which exposure to incarceration speeds up biological aging. The current article highlights unique structural factors and care practices that incarcerated older adults face in correctional and community health systems. These factors and practices are often in direct opposition to age-friendly care. Opportunities exist to expand research, modify existing policies, and change current care practices. Given their expertise in health system processes, gerontol
