[Case report: the practical use of the self-care deficit nursing theory for a patient with a neuroendocrine cancer of the duodenum].

This case describes the nursing care of a 66-year-old electively admitted patient who came to hospital for the treatment of a hepatic secondary neuroendocrine duodenum cancer. A typical liver resection with duodeno-pancreatectomy and sigmaresection was performed. Complications led to more than ten re-laparatomies with resection of the stomach and oesophagus. It was necessary to perform blind occlusion of the jejunum and the disposition of an oesophagus stoma. A diabetes mellitus was caused by the total resection of the pancreas. Mister B. got a percutaneous endoscope jejunostomy but it could n

Practice nurse involvement in the management of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus attending a general practice: results from a systematic review.

AIM: Using the methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute, a systematic review of current research was performed to determine if the addition of management by nurses had been more effective in improving clinical outcomes of patients with type 2 diabetes attending a general practice compared with standard care. METHODS: A three-step literature search was conducted for suitable English studies with quantitative clinical outcomes that had been published from January 1990 to May 2014. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) were particularly sought after; however, other research designs were consider

Patient safety as ethical practice: A qualitative study of the Protection of Life principle in nursing care.

BackgroundPatient safety is commonly conceptualized through ethical reductionism, risk management, and technical performance indicators. However, such approaches may insufficiently address the ethical, relational, spiritual, and culturally embedded dimensions of nursing care. Within Islamic ethical thought, the principle of Hifz al-Nafs (protection of life) offers a holistic moral framework for understanding patient protection beyond biomedical risk prevention.AimThis study aimed to explore Indonesian nurses' ethical understandings and lived experiences of patient safety and caring and to exam

Bridging the nurse practitioner education-to-practice gap: Postgraduate residency as a workforce transition strategy.

BACKGROUND: The United States faces a critical shortage of primary care providers, with nurse practitioners (NPs) increasingly positioned to fill this gap. Yet despite rapid growth in NP licensure and workforce projections, a troubling disconnect persists between academic preparation and clinical readiness. New graduate NPs frequently begin practice with developing proficiency and an ongoing need for skill acquisition, necessitating structured support as they transition into their new roles. When mentorship and structured residency support are lacking, this early period of role adaptation ofte

The Political and Legal Landscape for Gender-Affirming Care and Transgender Health: Implications for Nursing Practice.

Gender-affirming care (GAC) refers to patient care in any setting or for any purpose that affirms a patient's gender identity. Policies impacting transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse people's access to GAC include those that impose patient age requirements, protect patients from insurance discrimination, determine what care is covered in public and private insurance, force schools to out transgender students, and allow providers to conscientiously object to treating transgender patients. In an era of strengthening policy restrictions on GAC and anti-transgender sentiment, nurses need to

The Invisible Human-in-the-Loop: An Evolutionary Concept Analysis of Artificial Intelligence in Nursing Assistant Practice.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly entering long-term care (LTC) environments, but its significance for the workforce performing the vast majority of hands-on care tasks, certified nursing assistants (CNAs), remains unclear. CNAs remain underrepresented in the literature on AI in nursing, which has focused on registered nurses (RNs) as clinical decision-makers. The missing element inhibits the conceptualization process and thus the research, teaching, and policymaking processes. To define this concept in the age of generative AI, this paper conducts a concept analysis using Rodgers' evolu

ICU Nurse Perspectives on Influences of Minimal Physical Restraint Practices: A Mixed-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Physical restraint is still common in Chinese intensive care units, especially for mechanically ventilated patients and those with invasive devices. Inappropriate use causes considerable physical and psychological harm. Despite global efforts to minimise restraint, systematic research on standardised assessment and management frameworks for restraint reduction in domestic ICUs is lacking. AIMS: This study aimed to explore the influencing factors of nurses' implementation of minimising physical restraint and identify key pathways for optimising clinical restraint management practic

Liberation Playbook: Pain, Sedation, Sleep, and Mobility Led by Advanced Practice Registered Nurses.

Mechanical ventilation is lifesaving yet harmful when paired with deep sedation and immobility. The ABCDEF, or intensive care unit liberation bundle (assessment and treatment of pain, spontaneous awakening and breathing trials, judicious choice of analgesia/sedation, delirium prevention/management, early mobility, and family engagement) mitigates these risks, improving survival, reducing delirium and coma, shortening time receiving ventilation, and promoting recovery. This article synthesizes evidence for the awake-and-walking intensive care unit, in which wakefulness and mobility are the defa
