To assess the frequency of superficial mycoses in forestry workers and farmers in the rural region of Duzce, a total of 467 residents of the rural region were examined for dermatomycosis infection. Of these, 349 were forestry workers and 118 farmers. All specimens collected were analysed by direct microscopy and culture. We report the preparation of dense and porous amphiphilic conetwork (APCN) membranes through the covalent interconnection of poly(vinylidene fluoride)-graft-poly[(2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PVDF-g-PDMAEMA) copolymers with telechelic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) or α,α-dichloro-p-xylene (XDC). Correction of syndactyly without skin grafts is simple and reliable. Combined with an absorbable suture technique the non-grafting method is further advantageous minimising risks and saving time and costs. Quantitating the binding of oligomeric proteins to RNA is not always straightforward with standard biochemical approaches such as the Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assay (EMSA). Here, we detail how we use a simple, alternative approach based on sample filtering through stacked nitrocellulose and positively charged nylon membranes to measure the affinity of the hexameric transcription termination factor Rho for RNA. The method is quick and easy to implement and should be useful to study the interaction of other RNA-binding proteins using RNA substrates bearing a 32P or fluorescent label.

We report on a 52-year-old male patient presenting with unilateral loss of vision of one week's duration. Pellucid marginal corneal degeneration was known. Slit lamp examination showed pronounced corneal edema as defined by acute corneal hydrops. After inferior preventive YAG iridotomy through clear cornea, intracameral air injection was performed. Deep stromal 10-0 nylon sutures were applied along the Descemet's membrane tear. The next day, the corneal edema had already begun to decrease.

The aim of this study was to assess the resistance of microsurgically repaired proper palmar digital nerves (PPDN) to mobilization. Thirty-nine PPDN from fresh forearms cadavers were transected and then sutured using 10/0 nylon. After skin closure, each finger was forcefully flexed and extended 10 times. Out of the 39 repaired nerves, two were elongated and four were ruptured; this amounts to a 15.38% complication rate. We recommend immobilization of nerve repairs, although this contradicts most recent studies.

Three groups of patients were reviewed 1, 2 and 3 years after extracapsular cataract extraction to assess the incidence of problems related to nylon corneal sutures and the need for suture removal. A large percentage of patients were found to have suture-related problems and required or had previously undergone suture removal. These findings are analysed. The potential risk of sight-threatening pathology associated with corneal sutures that are left in situ suggests that routine suture removal about 3 months after surgery is to be recommended.

The efficiency of a gelatin capsule containing a nylon string for collection of duodenal specimens was investigated in carriers of Salmonella typhosa (typhi). Spleen cells from mice infected with T. congolense strongly suppressed lymphocyte stimulation induced in normal spleen cells by incubation with mitogens or allogeneic cells. Cell dilution studies showed that suppressor activity was extremely strong. Suppressor cell activity was markedly reduced by treatment of spleen cell populations with mitomycin-C and was unaffected by treatment with anti-Thy.1 sera and complement. Removal of cells which bound carbonyl iron or which bound to nylon columns, decreased but did not abolish suppressor activity.

LPS or DxS impair contact sensitivity to oxazolone in mice, evaluated as ear thickness and DNA synthesis of regional lymph node cells in vitro. Lymphoid cells from LPS- or DxS-injected and sensitized mice were able to transfer specifically the suppression when injected into animals sensitized immediately before cell transfer. This cell suppressor activity was eliminated by nylon wool filtration. These results suggest that B-cell mitogens may enhance suppressor cell activity of regulatory cells which arise during conventional immunization.
