Technical Specifications for Occupational Health Surveillance (GBZ 188-2014) is an important basis for judging suspected occupational diseases and occupational contraindications. There are crossing over or overlap between occupational contraindications and diagnostic criteria of poisoning damage. Occupational contraindications have different meanings with the degree and range of common diseases or symptoms and the frequency of physical examination during employment conflicts with the current standard. Based on the practice of occupational health examination in a large population, the present s…

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) compounds have been studied extensively and several agencies have described their toxicological profile. In the past, personnel of the Dutch Ministry of Defence may have been exposed to Cr(VI) during maintenance activities. To investigate if this exposure may have caused irreversible adverse health effects, the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) summarized all available knowledge from previous evaluations. This information was complemented with a scoping review to retrieve new scientific literature. All scientific evidence was eva

BACKGROUND: Prolonged wear of facial protective equipment can lead to occupational dermatoses.
OBJECTIVE: To identify important causes of occupational dermatoses from facial protective equipment.
METHODS: A systematic review following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines was performed using PubMed and Embase databases. Articles were included if they reported occupational dermatoses caused by surgical/procedure masks or N95 respirators, or both.
RESULTS: We identified 344 articles, and 16 were suitable for inclusion in this review. Selected articles f

BACKGROUND: The literature remains seldom on the topic of self-rated health (SRH) among the national working populations of emerging countries. The objectives of the study were to examine the associations of occupational factors with SRH in a national representative sample of the working population in Brazil.
METHODS: This study relied on a cross-sectional sample of 36,442 workers, 16,992 women and 19,450 men. SRH was the studied health outcome. Sixteen occupational factors related to four topics were studied: employment characteristics, working time/hours, psychosocial work factors and physi

BACKGROUND: The photocopying occupation contributes to various health issues in workers. Elevated levels of oxidative stress have been found to be associated with respiratory problems in occupational workers. The intention of the current research is to evaluate the association between the pulmonary function parameters, a biomarker of oxidative stress, and the photocopying occupation in Lahore, Pakistan.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was performed on a group of photocopying operators (N = 100) and a control group (N = 100). A structured questionnaire was developed to gather the demographic a

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is one of the most common causes of excessive daytime sleepiness, therefore an important determinant of road and work accidents, as well as being associated with multiple chronic-degenerative diseases. The recent transposition of the European Commission Directive 2014/85/EU on driver licensing highlighted the need to tackle the problem appropriately, not only for its high prevalence in the general population, but also for its significant impact on occupational safety and health, and related social costs. The Occupational Health Physician is required to p…

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) settled in floor dust play an important role in human health. Although many studies investigated occupational exposure to PAHs, no attempts have been made to report PAHs concentrations as well as their health risk assessment inside an educational building in Jordan. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to report the PAHs concentrations in floor dust and evaluate their exposure and health risk inside the Department of Physics of the University of Jordan. The total PAHs concentrations ranged from 714 to 5246ng/g. The high concentrations were obse

BACKGROUND: Occupational status, a core component of socioeconomic status, plays a critical role in the well-being of U.S. workers. Identifying work-related disparities can help target prevention efforts.
METHODS: Bureau of Labor Statistics workplace data were used to characterize high-risk occupations and examine relationships between demographic and work-related variables and fatality.
RESULTS: Employment in high-injury/illness occupations was independently associated with being male, Black, ≤high school degree, foreign-birth, and low-wages. Adjusted fatal occupational injury rate ratios f

We surveyed physicians in a national occupational medicine society regarding diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection in healthcare workers. Most respondents used a combination of skin testing and interferon gamma release assays. Respondents integrating interferon gamma release assays into screening placed greater importance on employee acceptability and convenience.

A community-university collaborative partnership assessed self-reported work-related health effects and environmental factors in Boston's Vietnamese immigrant community via an interviewer-assisted survey. Seventy-one nail technicians responded. Musculoskeletal disorders, skin problems, respiratory irritation and headaches were commonly reported as work-related, as were poor air quality, dusts and offensive odors. The reporting of a work-related respiratory symptom was significantly associated with the reporting of exposure factors such as poorer air quality. Absence of skin disorders was assoc

A survey was conducted among teachers to explore 1) risk factors of voice disorders, 2) the number and nature of problems experienced, 3) the need for medical help, and 4) how occupational health care reacts to this need. Additionally, the knowledgeability of occupational health care physicians and the way treatment of voice disorders is currently organized was explored. Of the 181 teachers who responded, 42% reported voice symptoms occurring daily or weekly. Every tenth teacher also had vocal nodules, and 40% of those with recurring voice problems had been on sick-leave. The respondents sugge…

Acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome (AIDS) was reported for the first time in Egypt in 1986. Up to March 1993, 60 cases were notified to the Ministry of Health and 359 were detected to be infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Most cases had acquired infection abroad through blood, blood products or sexual contact. The number of cases is continuously increasing. Fear and ignorance about HIV infection causes panic among health care workers (HCWs) whenever a case is discovered and needs medical care. We assessed the knowledge and attitude of 346 HCWs towards the probability of occupat

Occupational epidemiology has played a central role in identifying workplace hazards and informing prevention. However, its focus on discrete exposures, bounded worksites, and linear models is insufficient to capture how contemporary work shapes health. Many risks arise not from isolated hazards, but from cumulative, interacting exposures generated by work organization that extend beyond the workplace and accumulate across working life. This paper proposes the Epidemiology of Working Life (EWL) as a framework for reorganizing occupational health science. Anchored in the working-life-exposome, …

This convergent mixed-methods study examined extended reality (XR)-supported leisure participation among 12 long-term psychiatric inpatients completing an 8-week virtual reality and augmented reality program within occupational therapy. Flow experience and technology acceptance were assessed quantitatively alongside qualitative thematic analysis of weekly semi-structured interviews. Flow experience increased significantly (p < .05, r = .82), while technology acceptance remained stable. Perceived usefulness significantly predicted flow (R2 = .575); perceived ease of use did not. BACKGROUND: Industrial noise exposure is a global occupational hazard, with increasing recognition of its deleterious non-auditory effects. Although the auditory consequences of excessive noise are well-known, an emerging body of evidence suggests significant impacts on cognition, cardiovascular and metabolic functions. India with a burgeoning industrial workforce and limited occupational health surveillance, remains under-researched in this domain.
OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the physiological and sensory processing impact of occupational noise exposure among industrial workers in Gu…
