The US Neisseria meningitidis urethritis clade (US_NmUC) harbors gonococcal deoxyribonucleic acid alleles and causes gonorrhea-like urogenital tract disease. A large convenience sample of US_NmUC isolates (N = 122) collected between January 2015 and December 2019 in Columbus, Ohio demonstrated uniform susceptibility to antibiotics recommended for gonorrhea treatment and meningococcal chemoprophylaxis.

A review of the literature disclosed many potential complications associated with endotracheal anesthesia. A retrospective review of the records of the general anesthetics administered to 5,223 outpatients receiving nasal endotracheal intubation at the Ohio State University was undertaken. This review showed minimal serious complications associated with nasal endotracheal anesthesia used for outpatients.

PURPOSE: To review the neuro-ophthalmic manifestations of Lyme disease at a central Ohio pediatric tertiary care center.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients diagnosed as having Lyme disease from September 2015 to September 2020 was completed. PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of asthma among all varsity athletes in a large National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I program.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records for all varsity athletes at The Ohio State University (OSU). Data were abstracted from patient charts that contained a Medical Health Questionnaire, annual physical examinations, and medical encounters by the OSU Sports Medicine staff. Histoplasmosis is recognized to occur in the Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys of the United States, but less widely appreciated is its worldwide distribution. We report a case of disseminated histoplasmosis with disease involving skin, lungs, and epiglottis in a renal transplant patient 6 months after a trip to Bangladesh, to highlight the potential risk of acquisition of this infection in the Indian subcontinent.

Although endemic along the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys in the United States, histoplasmosis may occur in many parts of the world. The multisystem involvement, the presence of non-caseating granulomas, and an elevated angiotensin converting enzyme in histoplasmosis cause diagnostic confusion with sarcoidosis. A careful epidemiologic history, serological tests, and tissue cultures are helpful in establishing the correct diagnosis.

Blastomyces is a fungus that is endemic to the Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys and Great Lakes region. The fungus is a rare cause of infection, but most commonly causes infections of the lungs followed by the skin and bones. Infection of the bone is often not clinically suspected, which can slow the diagnosis. In this report, we present a case of Blastomyces osteomyelitis in a young, immunocompetent male.

Visceral leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease that can be transmitted from dogs to humans by a sand-fly vector. Endemic cases of visceral leishmaniasis among dogs in Oklahoma, Texas, and Ohio have been reported. Histoplasmosis is endemic to the Mississippi and Ohio River valley regions in the US. It usually affects patients with underlying immunodeficiency but can also be seen in immunocompetent hosts. Although gastrointestinal involvement is common in the setting of disseminated histoplasmosis, isolated gastrointestinal involvement is uncommon. We report a case of isolated pancreatic histoplasmosis in an immunocompetent patient, presenting as painless jaundice and pancreatic head mass.

Clinical and environmental Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 isolates from a single water source in Columbus, Ohio, exhibited five different plasmid profiles. The multiplicity of plasmid profiles observed within a single geographic area and a skewed distribution of isolates bearing these plasmid profiles within this area suggest that plasmid analyses will be useful in the study of the epidemiology of Legionnaires disease and the environmental distribution of legionellae.

Giant molluscum contagiosum (MC) has a well-known association with human immunodeficiency virus and other immune deficiency states. Although rare, it can be seen in healthy immunocompetent children. We describe eight cases of giant MC in healthy, immunocompetent African immigrant children in the Columbus, Ohio area. This report describes the clinical characteristics, treatment, and course of giant MC in this patient population.
