BACKGROUND: Olecranon fractures comprise ∼10% of upper extremity fractures, often managed with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). Despite generally favorable outcomes, short-term complications remain challenging and uncharacterized. This retrospective study aims to address this gap by evaluating short-term complications of olecranon ORIF using a large, nationwide database to determine complication rates and identify associated risk factors.
METHODS: The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database (2010-2023) was queried for patients undergoing

PURPOSE: Malnutrition has been associated with increased postoperative complications, yet its influence on distal radius open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) remains unexplored. This study compared the impact of malnutrition on complications following ORIF within both 90-day and 2-year postoperative periods.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used electronic medical records. Patients were divided into two cohorts: those with malnutrition, defined by having one or more of the following laboratory findings: albumin <3.5 g/dL; transferrin <204 mg/dL; or total leukocyte count <1,500/

BACKGROUND: Many patients with mandibular fracture need treatment with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). These patients are typically treated in hospital, as either inpatients or day surgery patients. However, it is possible to perform these surgeries in a nonhospital surgical facility (NHSF). In this study, we review the outcomes of ORIF surgery for mandibular fracture performed in an NHSF.
METHODS: A retrospective chart analysis was conducted for all patients with mandibular fracture who were referred, between 2019 and 2024, to an NHSF in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, for ORIF. Data

AIMS: Medial humeral epicondyle fractures (MHEFs) are common elbow fractures in children. Open reduction should be performed in patients with MHEF who have entrapped intra-articular fragments as well as displacement. However, following open reduction, transposition of the ulnar nerve is disputed. The aim of this study is to evaluate the need for ulnar nerve exploration and transposition.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study. The clinical data of patients who underwent surgical treatment of MHEF in our hospital from January 2015 to January 2022 were collected. The patients were alloc

This case report outlines the effective use of the Titanium Elastic Nail System (TENS) for treating a peri-implant mid-shaft radius and ulna fracture in a patient with previous elbow arthrodesis and rotational full-thickness flap coverage. Given the paucity of literature surrounding this complex problem, we present a minimally - invasive treatment option which facilitated complete fracture healing, demonstrating the TENS's efficacy in complex orthopedic scenarios.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular fractures are common facial fractures, and contemporary management of mandibular condylar fractures is controversial. The purpose of this study was to compare the outcomes of patients who sustained a mandibular condylar fracture between 2016 and 2020, who were managed by either open or closed techniques. The outcomes of this study were: post-operative facial nerve function, occlusion, and maximal mouth opening.
METHODS: This study is a retrospective multicentre cohort study which assessed clinical records for 246 patients with mandibular condyle fractures in three hospi

BACKGROUND: As health care shifts to value-based models, one strategy within orthopedics has been to transition appropriate cases to outpatient or ambulatory settings to reduce costs; however, there are limited data on the efficacy and safety of this practice for isolated ankle fractures. The purpose of this study was to compare the cost and safety associated with inpatient versus outpatient ankle open reduction internal fixation (ORIF).
METHODS: All patients who underwent ORIF of isolated closed ankle fractures at 2 affiliated hospitals between April 2016 and March 2017 were identified retro

BACKGROUND: Many fractures of the mandibular condylar neck are amenable to both open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and closed treatment. Clinical outcomes following these two modalities remains a topic of debate. This systematic review critically appraises the literature to compare them following these treatment options.
METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to test the null hypothesis of no difference in clinical outcomes in ORIF versus closed treatment of mandibular condyle fractures. The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Elsevier text mining tool database, a

BACKGROUND: Radial neck fractures are the third most common elbow fracture in children. Open reduction may be required if closed or mini-open techniques are not successful in reducing the fracture. Previous reports on open reduction have noted poor outcomes and complications with this treatment approach. However, it is unknown whether it is the open procedure itself or the severity of the initial injury that leads to the poor results. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between intraoperative findings at the time of open reduction of radial neck fractures and the clinical

INTRODUCTION: The association between obesity and the need for open reduction and surgical fixation of the syndesmosis in the setting of malleolar ankle fractures remains to be elucidated. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to assess the relationship between obesity, ankle fracture complexity, and the need for open reduction and fixation of the syndesmosis.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the NSQIP database was performed for patients undergoing surgical fixation of isolated, closed ankle fractures. Patients were grouped by fracture pattern into 6 cohorts (uni-, bi- and tr

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the humeral shaft represent 2-4% of all fractures. Fractures of the humerus have traditionally been approached posteriorly for open reduction and internal fixation. Reports of treating midshaft fractures with an open anterolateral approach and anterior plating are limited. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a series of humeral shaft fractures treated with plate osteosynthesis regarding the effect of the approach and plate location on the healing rate and occurrence of complications.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients aged over 18 yea
