[Antibioprophylaxis and itinerant ambulatory surgery in the milieu of endemic trachoma].

Between 1987 to 1992, 3,309 eyes had been operated on during the seventeen missions realized in Morrocco, by the Morroccan Itinerant Ophthalmologist Association. To prevent postoperative infectious endophthalmitis, asepsis was rigorous and local antibiotics prophylaxis were administered preoperatively, during surgery and postoperatively. Ophthalmic solutions (gentamicin, norfloxacin, or ofloxacin) were used. Six (6) eyes in our study developed infectious endophthalmitis (1.8). The fluoroquinolones are a new class of antibacterial agents with considerable potential in the treatment of ophthalmi…

[Design of Novel Ophthalmic Formulation Containing Drug Nanoparticles and Its Usefulness as Anti-glaucoma Drugs].

The ophthalmic application of drugs is the primary route of administration for the therapy of glaucoma; however, in traditional formulations, only small amounts of the administered drug penetrate the cornea to reach the desired intraocular tissue due to corneal barriers. Recently, nanoparticulate drug delivery is expected as a technology to overcome the difficulties in delivering drugs across biological barriers (improvement of bioavailability). In this study, we attempted to establish a new method for preparing solid drug nanoparticles by using a bead mill and various additives, and succeeded

A comparison of ciprofloxacin and tobramycin in bacterial conjunctivitis in children.

A study was conducted to determine the safety and efficacy of topically applied ciprofloxacin ophthalmic solution in a pediatric population experiencing acute bacterial conjunctivitis. Topically applied ciprofloxacin (3 mg/mL) is known to be a safe and effective treatment for adults suffering from bacterial conjunctivitis; however, the safety and effectiveness of this broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone in pediatric patients is not well established. Ciprofloxacin was evaluated in a double-blind, randomized, controlled study of 257 patients ranging from 0 (i.e., less than 1 year) to 12 years of age

Harmonisation of Sterility Assessment for Autologous Serum Eyedrops in Switzerland.

ABSTRACT: PURPOSE: Autologous serum eye drops (ASED) are classified as non-standardisable medicine by Swissmedic. Future approval is dependent on whether manufacturing meets the requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.). Currently there is an effort to harmonise the manufacturing process for ASED in Switzerland, in order to facilitate approval. This includes standardisation of sterility assessment. This study evaluates the relevant sterility testing methods as described in the Ph. Eur. and includes the verification of possible antimicrobial activity of serum and the suitability tes

Pharmacologic principles behind eye drop dosing: From pharmacokinetics to clinical practice.

Topical ocular therapy plays a crucial role in managing infectious and inflammatory diseases of the anterior segment. Its therapeutic efficacy depends not only on the intrinsic potency of the drug, but also on the appropriateness of the dosing regimen in relation to ocular pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics principles. Because less than 5% of an instilled dose reaches the intraocular tissues, achieving therapeutic efficacy requires tailoring dosing schedules to tear dynamics, barrier permeability, and formulation characteristics. Despite its central relevance to clinical outcomes, the appli

[Clinical application prospects and challenges of preservative-free anti-glaucoma drugs].

As the world's leading irreversible blinding eye disease, glaucoma is predominantly managed with pharmaceutical interventions in clinical practice. However, long-term use of traditional eye drops containing preservatives (e.g., benzalkonium chloride) may induce ocular surface toxicity, increase the incidence of dry eye, promote conjunctival fibrosis, and compromise the success rate of filtering surgery. In recent years, the field of ophthalmology has been actively advancing the research, development, and clinical application of preservative-free anti-glaucoma drugs. This article focuses on the

Recent advances in nanocrystal-based technologies applied for ocular drug delivery.

INTRODUCTION: The intricate physiological barriers of the eye and the limited volume of eye drops impede efficient delivery of poorly water-soluble drugs. In the last decade, nanocrystals have emerged as versatile drug delivery systems in various administration routes from bench to bedside. The unique superiorities of nanocrystals, mainly embodied in high drug-loading capacity, good mucosal adhesion and penetration, and greatly improved drug solubility, reveal a promising prospect for ocular delivery of poorly water-soluble drugs. AREAS COVERED: This article focuses on the ophthalmic nanocrys

Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis: A Systematic Review.

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic, bilateral corneal and conjunctival problem which typically presents in young individuals. VKC is characterized by itching, photophobia, white mucous discharge, lacrimation, foreign body sensation, and pain due to corneal involvement of shield ulcers. Vernal keratoconjunctivitis is categorized within ocular diseases. The diagnosis is clinical, as no sure biomarkers pathognomonic of the disease have yet been identified. The VKC therapy relies on different types of drugs, from antihistamines and topical steroids to cyclosporine or tacrolimus eye dro

[Allergic and immunopathological diseases of the ocular surface].

Allergic and immunopathological diseases of the ocular surface are inflammations that can occur with mild to severe symptoms that cause visual impairment. Allergic inflammations mainly affect the conjunctiva, causing acute and/or chronic conjunctivitis. Several forms are distinguished: seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, vernal conjunctivitis, atopic keratoconjunctivitis, contact allergy, giant papillary conjunctivitis. The most common is the seasonal form, which is linked to seasons. Allergic ocular surface processes require local treatment with artificial tears, anti-allergic eye drops. If com
