Ophthalmologic features of Parkinson's disease.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) commonly complain of impaired visual function and difficulty reading, despite normal visual acuity. Although previous studies have evaluated contrast sensitivity, color vision, visuospatial processing, visual hallucinations, and ocular movements, none has systematically evaluated the ocular complaints and ocular findings of PD patients. Thirty patients with early untreated PD and 31 control subjects without neurologic or known ocular diseases were ophthalmologically evaluated for the frequency of visual complaints, dry eyes, blepharitis, visual hallucinat

Neonatal candidiasis: ophthalmologic infection.

Endophthalmitis results from hematogenous seeding of the eye in preterm infants with candidiasis. Early systemic therapy decreases the frequency of eye involvement, now only about 6% in infants with systemic candidiasis. Eye disease can occur on the first day, but is more likely with prolonged candidemia. Candida albicans and C tropicalis predominate in newborns. Indirect ophthalmoscopy will identify the characteristic unilateral or bilateral, yellow-white, fluffy, retinal or vitreal balls with frequent hemorrhage or inflammatory vitreous haze. Systemic antifungal therapy alone usually results

Ophthalmological problems of the premature infant.

Preterm infants are more likely than term infants to have significant abnormalities of all parts of the visual system leading to reduced vision. The most common problem is retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). The frequency and severity of this disorder is inversely related to gestational age. Damage ranges from minor to catastrophic. Preterm infants also have higher rates of amblyopia, strabismus, refractive error, and cortical visual impairment. The later problem is largely associated with neonatal brain injury. Years later, these children may develop glaucoma and retinal detachments.

[Pathologic ophthalmologic changes in prematurity].

The personal author's experiences has been presented, with regards to the early discovering and adequate preventing of ophthalmology diseases at prematurely born children. Thanks to the development of perinatology, almost every organ can be monitored and functionally examined even before the child is born. Despite all problems, the work of ophthalmo-paediatritians is extremely challenging, because that is the only situation in which embryology of the eye can be seen "In Vitro" and in which the physiological development of the eye's function can been monitored. During the period from 1999 to 20…

[Ophthalmological diagnosis in systemic vasculitis].

Ocular manifestations of systemic vasculitides are extraordinarily pleomorph and have been described for many decades. In the introduction the special interaction of the immune system and the eye is outlined. Thereafter diagnostic procedures of patients suffering from systemic vasculitides are shown from an ophthalmological view point. Many examples, which show multiple possibilities of ocular manifestations on systemic vasculitides, are given. With regard to the anatomy of the eye, a review is given on the involvement of the 1) outer eye and a tear film, 2) lacrimal duct diseases, 3) diseases

Ophthalmologic abnormalities in mentally retarded.

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence and types of ophthalmologic abnormalities in mentally retarded subjects. METHODS: Seventy-three institutionalized mentally retarded subjects (41 boys and 32 girls) aged 5 to 19 years (mean: 11.5 years) were examined ophthalmologically during a three month period (from May to July 1999). The eye examination consisted of visual acuity testing (illiterate Snellen E-chart or acuity card procedures), pupillary reflex and motility evaluation, cover test for phoria and tropia, examination of adnexa and anterior segment (magnifying glass or slit-lamp biomicroscopy

The puzzle of autism: an ophthalmologic contribution.

PURPOSE: A previous study of 86 thalidomide-affected subjects with ophthalmic manifestations revealed the unexpected finding of autism in 4 of the 5 severely retarded individuals. The subjects had anomalies associated with an early gestational effect of thalidomide, including facial nerve palsy and incomitant strabismus. Because autism has been observed in a few cases of Möbius sequence (Möbius syndrome), a condition characterized by involvement of the sixth and seventh cranial nerves, the similarity to early thalidomide embryopathy suggested a relation between cranial nerve involvement and au

Ophthalmologic findings in patients with ataxia.

PURPOSE: To determine the frequency and spectrum of ophthalmologic findings in a large, heterogeneous group of patients with ataxia. METHODS: Medical records of 184 patients from a university-based ataxia clinic were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were classified as having Friedreich's ataxia, spinocerebellar degeneration, cerebellar degeneration, familial or sporadic olivo-pontocerebellar atrophy, multisystem atrophy, spastic ataxia, myoclonic ataxia, or other diagnoses such as mitochondrial myopathy. All had complete ophthalmologic examinations, and 107 underwent electro-oculography. R

[Ophthalmologic signs in children with autism].

PURPOSE: Autism is a clinical entity defined by characteristic association of a lack of social interactions and communications, beginning before three years of age. The purpose of this study was to screen ophthalmologic findings in autistic children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten autistic children, 6 girls and 4 boys, underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination in the Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology at the Hospital La Timone, Marseilles, France. Their age ranged from 1 to 14 years (mean = 8.5 +/- 3.8). RESULTS: Refraction showed hypermetropia in 7 cases (70%), astigmatism more than 1 …

Ophthalmologic manifestation of Behçet's disease.

Loss of vision in Behçet's disease is one of the most common, as well as one of the most serious, of its varied manifestations. Total blindness may often be the eventual outcome. The underlying problem in the eye, as well as in other organ systems, is an occlusive vasculitis. Although the most common ocular symptom is that of iridocyclitis, the presence of retinovascular lesions, especially necrotizing retinitis, is well known but often obscured by the severity of the anterior reaction, which precludes a good view of the retina. While Behçet's disease is characterized by spontaneous remissions

[Ophthalmologic causes of traffic accidents].

The review deals with association of traffic accidents and visual state of drivers. The study in healthy professional drivers covered influence of visual defect patterns (short sight, lower visual acuity, unilateral amblyopia and single eye) on quality of car driving. The driving quality appeared to be influenced by factor causing lower visual acuity (changes in refraction and opacity of transparent eye structures). Binocular vision plays insignificant role in driving and maneuvering. Lower quality of maneuvering results mainly from diplopia, but not from loss of stereoscopic vision.

Neuro-ophthalmologic Aspects of Ameloblastoma.

Ameloblastomas are histologically benign tumors derived from the odontogenic apparatus. Although these tumors are locally invasive, they rarely invade the paranasal sinuses, orbits, or intracranial cavity, and, thus, they rarely produce ophthalmologic signs and symptoms. In this report, we describe the neuro-ophthalmologic features of three patients with chronically aggressive ameloblastoma. Two of the patients developed a progressive and recurrent orbital apex and cavernous sinus syndromes. One of these patients is, to our knowledge, the first patient described with orbital and cavernous simu

[Ophthalmological aspects of systemic vasculitis].

Ocular findings of systemic vasculitis, such as polyarteritis nodosa, giant cell angitis, and aortitis syndrome were reviewed. Systemic lupus erythematosus is not categorized as systemic vasculitis, however its ocular findings are microangiopathic. Therefore review of its ocular findings was included in this paper. The most common fundus finding in these diseases is ischemic optic neuropathy or retinal vascular occlusions. Therefore several points in diagnosis or pathogenesis of optic neuropathy and retinal and choroidal vaso occlusion were discussed. Choroidal ischemia has come to be able to

Ophthalmological complications of cryptococcal meningitis.

Two patients with cryptococcal meningitis associated with ophthalmological complications are described. One patient developed a cryptococcal fundal lesion which disappeared during chemotherapy. Chronically raised intracranial pressure was associated with a visual field defect. This resolved with repeated lumbar punctures. The second patient developed visual deficits secondary to papilloedema and responded to optic nerve decompression. In both cases CT scanning demonstrated swelling of the optic nerves. In the second patient this regressed after decompression. A review of the variety of the oph

Ophthalmologic use of botulinum A exotoxin.

Purified botulinum A exotoxin was used to treat 9 adults with strabismus, 22 adults with incapacitating essential blepharospasm and 1 adult with "senile" spastic lower-eyelid entropion. Eight of the strabismus patients received one injection each into one horizontal extraocular muscle under electromyographic control in the outpatient clinic; the ninth patient received two injections. One week after the injection there was an 81% change on average in the angle of deviation. In the three patients followed up for 4 to 9 months the average change was 66%. For the patients with blepharospasm the to

Ophthalmologic oncology: alopecia of the eyelashes.

The variety of lesions that can cause alopecia of the eyelashes (Table 1) demonstrates the need for accurate diagnosis. A full-thickness biopsy of lid margin with appropriate three-suture closure can leave an imperceptible defect and may provide invaluable information. Although a partial-thickness lid biopsy is certainly appropriate for many common eyelid tumors such as basal-cell carcinomas or nevi, we feel strongly that a full-thickness lid biopsy is indicated when discussing chronic eyelid lesions that cause alopecia. The information gathered from a full-thickness biopsy is far superior esp
