Wormian bones are formed due to abnormal ossification centers in various locations in the skull. Genetic and/or environmental factors have been proposed to explain their formation. These bones can be normal anatomical variants or associated with a number of pathological conditions. The literature reports the most common locations of these bones as the cranial sutures, and reports of the presence of these bones in the orbit are rare. Clinically, these bones in the orbit can simulate fractures on imaging or can dislodge during surgery causing injury to the surrounding structures. Herein, we repo…

A 6-month-old boy presented with recurrent, poorly differentiated orbital sarcoma diagnosed as nonrhabdomyosarcoma soft tissue sarcoma, as pathologic and immunohistochemical evaluation was inconsistent with rhabdomyosarcoma or other specific sarcoma subtypes. He responded favorably to a treatment regimen for poorly differentiated sarcomas.

Dermoid cyst is an example of choristoma (i.e., tumors that originate from aberrant primordial tissue which result in normal appearing tissue in an abnormal location). This particular type of cyst is formed at the site where 2 suture lines of the skull close during embryonic development, and during this time, dermal or epidermal elements are pinched off which later convert to form cysts. Approximately, 50% of these tumors that involve the head are found in or adjacent to the orbit. This article presents a similar case of the orbital dermoid cyst with its management and also a review on other v…

Diagnosis of Graves ophthalmopathy is based on the typical eye signs and symptoms, the exclusion of other orbital pathologies and evidence of thyroid autoimmunity. We report the case of a non-smoker 61 years old woman, known with Graves disease, which performed a 3T MRI examination in order to evaluate the orbits. The MRI exam revealed eye protrusion, increased orbital fat with compression on the optic nerve and increased volume of the extraocular muscles. We concluded that MRI, using high-field 3T imaging techniques, is very important for diagnosis of these anomalies, making the differential …

PURPOSE: To describe a series of orbital fractures and associated ophthalmic and craniofacial injuries in the pediatric population.
METHODS: A retrospective case series of 312 pediatric patients over a 9-year period (2002-2011) with orbit fractures diagnosed by CT.
RESULTS: Five hundred ninety-one fractures in 312 patients were evaluated. There were 192 boys (62%) and 120 girls (38%) with an average age of 7.3 years (range 4 months to 16 years). Orbit fractures associated with other craniofacial fractures were more common (62%) than isolated orbit fractures (internal fractures and fractures …

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Trochlear calcification is frequently seen on CT scans that include the orbits, but prior studies linking this finding to diabetes mellitus were based on selected populations by using relatively thick sections. We assessed the relationship between trochlear calcification and diabetes mellitus and other chronic medical conditions in an unrestricted population by using thin-section CT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Noncontrast head CT studies performed consecutively on 1000 patients between January and February 2011 were retrospectively reviewed for the presence of trochlear ca…

This article shows the pathological and physiological images of the orbit, which each radiologist will commonly see in his or her everyday CT scan practice. It explains the images, following the course of the patient's trajectory through imaging as complications develop or in the post-treatment monitoring of some common disorders (orbital trauma, retinal detachment, postoperative appearances).

Idiopathic orbital inflammation is a common cause of acute orbital signs and symptoms. It is typically confined to the bony orbit; however, it can rarely involve contiguous structures with or without lytic change raising clinical suspicion for malignancy. Three cases of idiopathic inflammation of the orbit that affected adjacent structures are reported here; 2 cases had maxillary sinus involvement, while a third had extension in the temporal fossa.

INTRODUCTION: Periorbital infection following pansinusitis is a rare complication which can lead to irreversible orbital and intracranial consequences. Chandler classified them in 1970.
OBSERVATION: An eight-year-old child presented with a subperiosteal superolateral abscess. The initial flu-like syndrome developed into pansinusitis resisting to usual treatment. Palpebral edema and major exophthalmia then appeared requiring CT scan and MRI, which confirmed a subperiosteal abscess.
DISCUSSION: A subperiosteal abscess is a serious condition requiring an early diagnosis and a medical or surgica…

A 4-year old, male intact, captive-bred chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera) was presented due to progressive exophthalmos of the right eye over a 5-month period. Ophthalmic examination revealed exophthalmos with dorsal displacement of the right globe. Retropulsion was decreased and a fluctuant, subcutaneous mass could be palpated posterior and dorsal to the central aspect of the zygomatic bone. Transdermal ultrasonography revealed a fluid-filled mass consistent with a cyst located within the ventral right orbit. Computed tomography demonstrated dorsal displacement of the globe, lateral displaceme…

The utility of angiography and embolisation of selected branches of the external carotid artery is occasionally helpful in the management of recurrent epistaxis, pre-operative devascularisation of tumours such as angiofibromas, and other head and neck conditions. The use of embolisation for recalcitrant post-tonsillectomy bleeding due to the formation of an aneurysm or pseudoaneurysm of branches of the external carotid artery has been described [P. Simoni, J. Bello, B. Kent, Pseudoaneurysm of the lingual artery secondary to tonsillectomy treated with selective embolization, Int. J. Pediatr. Ot

Cavernous haemangiomas are the most common orbital masses and the second most common cause of unilateral proptosis after thyroid ophthalmopathy. We retrospectively analysed 19 patients with retrobulbar cavernous haemangiomas, 9 of whom had lateral orbitotomy to remove retrobulbar cavernous haemangiomas located superior (n=4), inferior (n=2) or lateral (n=3) to the optic nerve. Seven patients had lateral orbitotomy together with an anterior medial approach to gain access to retrobulbar cavernous haemangiomas located medially to the optic nerve in the posterior half of the orbit. An anterior app…

BACKGROUND: A spontaneous arteriovenous fistula of the orbit is exceedingly rare. We report the first case of such condition treated with direct surgical exposure of the superior ophthalmic vein (SOV) followed by embolization.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 55-year-old man presented with upper lid swelling, conjunctival chemosis, and proptosis of the right eye. Angiography revealed an intraorbital shunt supplied by the ophthalmic artery whose venous drainage curved anteriorly to the SOV. Because transarterial and transvenous endovascular approaches to treat the fistula were impossible, we performed dire…

Human cysticercosis is caused by dissemination of embryos of Taenia solium from the intestine via the hepatoportal system to the tissues and organs of the body. We report, probably the first case, where orbital cysticercosis was associated with multiple Cysticercus cellulosae cysts in the brain and subcutaneous tissue. Thorough screening for all the sites of involvement by the cyst is extremely useful for knowing the extent of dissemination, infection control, and for epidemiological purposes.

A 61-year-old man with a history of malignant solitary fibrous tumor of the chest had development of unusual sites of metastasis involving the sphenoid wing of the orbit and soft tissues of the cheek. He was found to have a solitary fibrous tumor, an uncommon type of spindle cell neoplasm that most often arises in the pleura, which was metastatic to the orbit. This is the first reported case of malignant solitary fibrous tumor metastatic to the orbit. The clinical and histopathologic findings of metastatic malignant solitary fibrous tumor are described.

PURPOSE: To identify chromosomal gains and losses in lymphoid tumors of the orbit and to examine whether such abnormalities are related to orbital presentation, disease severity, or risk for recurrent disease.
METHODS: Biopsy specimens from 26 patients were examined by histomorphologic and immunohistochemical analysis. Lymphomas were classified according to the Revised European-American Lymphoma Classification. Chromosomal imbalances were detected by high-resolution comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). Clinical data were obtained by retrospective evaluation of medical records.
RESULTS: C…

The operation of malignant tumors must follow the rule of oncology procedure. The fact is very important to avoid complications in the short- or long-term. The complication in the short term is bleeding during the operation, and the complications in the long-term are: metastasis of the tumor and locally recidive. Metastasis is of the tumor can occur because of the opening of the vessels, so that particles or microparticles of the tumor can enter into the lumen of the artery or the vein. However, this can also happen by the lymphatic route. If the operating procedure follows the rule of oncolog
