Effects of increased occlusal vertical dimension on the jaw-opening reflex in adult rats.

OBJECTIVE: Malocclusion with deep overbite and facial esthetics improve when facial height is intentionally increased during orthodontic extrusion of the posterior teeth. Thus, a better understanding of post-treatment stability of increased occlusal vertical dimension (iOVD) in adult patients is important. We focused on the jaw-opening reflex (JOR), which plays an important role in the control of jaw movements during mastication, and investigated the effects of iOVD on the JOR in rats with an electrophysiological technique. DESIGN: One hundred and twenty 13-week-old male Wistar rats were rand…

Root fracture and its management.

UNLABELLED: Root fractures are uncommon following dental trauma but are mostly diagnosed shortly after the injury, although occasionally at routine dental appointments. This paper presents the management of the different types of root fractures and the types of healing response suggesting the appropriate follow-up of these injuries. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A thorough clinical examination supplemented with radiographs, vitality tests, appropriate treatment planning and subsequent follow-up of root fractured teeth can improve the prognosis for these teeth and also minimize the need for subsequent e

Orthodontically induced eruption of a horizontally impacted maxillary central incisor.

This case report presents the clinical features and periodontal findings in a patient with a horizontally impacted maxillary central incisor that had been exposed and aligned after a closed-eruption surgical technique. By combining 3 treatment stages-maxillary expansion, crown exposure surgery, and induced eruption-the horizontally impacted incisor was successfully moved into proper position. The patient finished treatment with a normal and stable occlusion between the maxillary and mandibular arches, and an adequate width of attached gingiva, even in the area surrounding the crown. The 5-year

A 3D comparison of planned versus achieved anterior tooth position in clear aligner treatment.

This study has compared the predicted anterior teeth alignment with the actual clinical results after the first set of aligners without refinement using digital intraoral scans and Clincheck digital models for evaluation. The sample included 40 adult individuals, with an average age of 27.8 years, treated with clear aligners for mild to moderate crowding. Initial and final intra-oral scans, along with predicted final digital models, were used for assessment. Four specific orthodontic tooth movements, vertical movement (including both intrusion and extrusion as linear displacements), along with

Maxillary anterior en masse retraction using different antero-posterior position of mini screw: a 3D finite element study.

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, mini screws are used in orthodontic tooth movement to obtain maximum or absolute anchorage. They have gained popularity among orthodontists for en masse retraction of anterior teeth after first premolar extraction in maximum anchorage cases. The purpose of this study was to determine the type of anterior tooth movement during the time when force was applied from different mini screw placements to the anterior power arm with various heights. METHODS: A finite element method was used for modeling maxillary teeth and bone structure. Brackets, wire, and hooks were also desig

Intrusion of supra-erupted molars using miniscrews: clinical success and root resorption.

INTRODUCTION: Conventional orthodontic techniques do not intrude posterior teeth effectively, and almost all methods result in anterior extrusion rather than posterior intrusion. New absolute anchorages (miniscrews and miniplates) are said to make posterior tooth intrusion possible. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical success of a new method for molar intrusion with miniscrews and its probable accompanying side effects. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten women with overerupted upper first molars participated in this study. Upper molar bands with brackets were cemented. Two miniscrews we

The clinical features and aetiological basis of primary eruption failure.

Primary failure of eruption (PFE) is a poorly understood condition associated with tooth eruption failure. This investigation systematically reviews the literature, evaluates clinical features and associations with PFE, and describes five further cases. Publications were selected and identified as describing PFE when there was no identifiable aetiological factor contributing to eruption failure and no evidence of successful orthodontic extrusion of the affected tooth or teeth. A data abstraction form recorded the following additional information; subject age, gender, general health status, and…

Evaluation of Treatment Effects of en Masse Mandibular Arch Distalization Using Skeletal Temporary Anchorage Devices: A Systematic Review.

Mandibular arch distalization using temporary anchorage devices (TADs) is effective in correcting borderline Class lll cases without surgery. This review analysed the existing literature evaluating the dental, skeletal, and soft tissue changes after en masse mandibular arch distalization using TADs. We followed PRISMA guidelines and registered this review in PROSPERO database CRD42023450524. PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane, Web of Science, and SCOPUS databases were searched. Orthodontic patients requiring en masse mandibular distalization using TADs were compared with different modalities of
