PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate and compare effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) and low-magnitude high-frequency mechanical vibration (HFMV) on orthodontic retention.
METHODS: Sixty-four female Wistar albino rats were divided into 9 groups (2 negative and positive controls each, 3 PBM and 2 HFMV groups) and studied for 25 days. In the experimental groups, closed nickel-titanium closed coil springs with a 50 cN force were placed for 10 days between the maxillary incisor and molar. PBM and HFMV were applied daily over long- (15 days) and short-term (7 days) retention periods. The PBM groups recei

A 12-year-old female patient was initially referred to and examined in the oral surgery department at the School of Dentistry, Belfast following referral from her high street orthodontist. Reason for referral was extraction of two supernumeraries associated with the palatal aspect of the maxillary central incisors along with removal of two retained maxillary primary canines, to facilitate orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances. Although not clinically evident, dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) revealed fusion between the right maxillary central incisor and adjacent palatal super

Compromised first permanent molars (FPMs) in children pose major challenges for dentists and patients even in low-caries-risk populations. Whether due to caries or Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH), compromised FPMs at an early age require careful treatment planning and timing of extraction, if necessary, to eventually have good space closure with healthy dentition. This comprehensive review explains the concept of early extraction of the FPMs in children and lists the results of published studies and systematic reviews regarding spontaneous or orthodontical space closure after the extrac

The aim of this study was to characterize the main indications, contraindications and prophylactic actions for third molar extraction according to the literature. The Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science databases were searched using a total of 3 search keys, including publications up to 5 years old, in English or Spanish, with availability of full text. Eighteen articles were selected and showed that the most frequent indication for third molar extraction was the diagnosis of pericoronaritis, followed by distal cervical caries in the lower second molar, and root resorption in adjacent teeth and

INTRODUCTION: Postorthodontic occlusal changes may stem from true relapse or may be a consequence of characteristic temporal changes. The aims of this research were to identify occlusal discrepancies related to the mandibular labial segment prompting a decision to undergo orthodontic retreatment.
METHODS: A mixed-methods assessment was undertaken comprising a qualitative analysis involving focus groups exploring the relative importance of a range of occlusal features in the decision to undergo retreatment and investigating the motives for seeking retreatment. Quantitative assessment of these

BACKGROUND: Mucogingival interceptive therapy in patients with buccally erupting teeth is performed to prevent the ectopic permanent tooth from developing periodontal lesions. The keratinized tissue entrapped between the erupting tooth and the deciduous tooth is retained to maintain a satisfactory width of the gingiva for the permanent tooth. The aim of the present study on buccally-erupted premolars scheduled for orthodontics was to evaluate the keratinized tissue width 3 months, 2 years, and 7 years subsequent to mucogingival interceptive therapy and orthodontic treatment.

Class III malocclusions present a great challenge for many orthodontists, especially if malocclusions are found in adult patients and alongside other dental problems. This case report shows an adult patient with a skeletal class III anterior crossbite, a unilateral posterior crossbite on the right side, a congenital absence of both lateral incisors and retained deciduous teeth, and shift in the lower midline. The upper retained deciduous teeth and lower premolars were extracted. Leveling and alignment were initiated. Build-up composite resin placed on the first molars allowed for bite opening.

In this case report, an eleven-year-old female presented to a rural dental clinic for routine dental examination. Upon evaluation of the dentition, the attending dentist discovered an over-retained primary tooth. Radiographically, a compound odontoma was present, gingival to an unerupted permanent maxillary left central incisor (number nine) and apical to the erupted primary central incisor (F). The odontoma and its overlying primary tooth were removed by an oral surgeon. The extraction site has healed uneventfully and an Orthodontic treatment plan was formulated. The etiology of odontomas is

OBJECTIVE: Understanding the chief complaints of patients is essential for effective communication and successful orthodontic treatment. Although previous studies have often used structured questionnaires, few have applied data-driven methods to unstructured free-text responses. Furthermore, how these complaints from distinct semantic structures based on molar classifications remains underexplored. This study aimed to examine these structural differences using correspondence and co-occurrence network analyses.

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) are structural anomalies resulting from the failure of craniofacial prominences to fuse during embryonic development. Orthodontic treatment seeks to address these conditions by improving dentofacial balance and restoring oral function, but long-term post-treatment stability continues to pose a challenge. This systematic review included a literature search of four electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane CENTRAL) to identify observational evidence on the stability of orthodontic treatment in CLP. Six studies, comprising three cohort studies a

INTRODUCTION: Impacted anterior teeth are common, with sequalae including root resorption of adjacent or nearby teeth. Management depends on patient- and tooth-specific factors; however, in cases of severe resorption, elective tooth loss may be favoured. This case discusses an aesthetic solution to disimpaction of an anterior tooth, involving multidisciplinary input.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A girl aged 13 years 10 months presented to an orthodontic department, complaining of missing teeth and poor dental aesthetics.

Solitary median maxillary central incisor (SMMCI) syndrome is a rare developmental disorder in which a patient presents with only one upper central incisor located in the midline, along with some other features - such as deviant sella turcica and pituitary gland morphology, panhypopituitarism, hypothyroidism, and hypoplasia of the inner genitals - that may or may not be present. Although some authors consider it a mild manifestation of holoprosencephaly, others classify it as a distinct entity. The aim of this case report is to describe the orthodontic treatment of an 11-year-old female patien

The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of a copper-calcium-hydroxide-based compound to remove microbial plaque naturally produced onto orthodontic clear aligners. A commercially available dental paste, named Cupral, based on copper-calcium-hydroxide, was used. A healthy volunteer (female, 32 years old), undergoing orthodontic treatment with thermoplastic clear aligners was enrolled. By conventional/confocal microscopy and colony-forming unit (CFU) assay, 2-week used aligners were examined for microbial plaque, prior and following exposure to Cupral. Confocal microscopy revealed a

INTRODUCTION: Alveolar distraction is mainly used to increase height and width of the alveolar crest. This technique, however, is not typically used for lengthening the perimeter of the dental arch or improving teeth axes. We applied alveolar distraction in a tooth-borne manner in the second stage of our original method and obtained favorable results. We therefore present an outline of this method.
