[Orthodontic anchorage in the era of osseointegration].

The introduction of the concept of osseointegration had a profound impact on dentistry of the 20th century. The idea of using this concept in orthodontics already started in the late 70th. There demand for achieving optimal esthetic results in a minimal treatment time, and the significant increase in the number of adult orthodontic patients, made osseointegration an essential adjunct to orthodontic therapy. The use of osseintegrated anchorage devices helps the clinician to overcome one of the most limiting aspects of orthodontic therapy--inadequate anchorage. In the last years a large variety …

Hypodontia in orthodontically treated children.

The frequency of hypodontia in orthodontically treated children, both male and female, and the association between tooth type, the upper or lower arch, the affected side and Angle's classification were studied using interviews, oral, study cast and panoramic radiographic examinations of 212 patients with a mean age of 12 years 7 months. A hypodontia frequency of 11.3 per cent was found for the total sample. This was higher than the incidence of hypodontia reported in other studies of orthodontically treated children. The most frequently missing teeth were the maxillary lateral incisors, and ma

Nickel allergy and orthodontic treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Tolerance induction to prevent development of nickel allergy has been suggested with permanent dental braces. We wanted to find out which effect orthodontic treatments had had on the development of nickel allergy in university students. STUDY DESIGN: We examined and patch tested 153 students, of whom 113 had a history of pierced skin, and 70 a history of orthodontic treatment roughly 10 years earlier. RESULTS: All except one student with pierced skin were females. Development of nickel allergy was significantly associated with skin piercing (54% compared with 12%). At the time of

[Supernumerary teeth and orthodontic treatment].

According to the orthodontist supernumerary teeth on dental arches necessitate a special analysis of the occlusion to decide which to keep and which ones to pull out. Then he must solve the problem of the new occlusion to have. Thus in this study the authors, from their personal experiences of treatment of cases about supernumerary teeth go through the matter.

Eruptive abnormalities in orthodontic treatment.

In the course of orthodontic practice, it is inevitable that one will encounter what is termed here eruptive abnormalities. These abnormalities include teeth that are impacted, ectopically erupting, or transposed. Hyperdontia and hypodontia are also included for consideration. The treatment plans developed to address these anomalies must take into account the space needs of the patient and how one can best gain, maintain, or redistribute that space. Also, soft tissue reactions to the movements also should be considered.

[Orthodontic treatment and root resorption].

Root resorption after orthodontic treatment occurs frequently. The biologic process of tooth movement and root resorption is described. Furthermore, attention is given to the frequency and severity of root resorption, diagnostics and aspects of the orthodontic treatment which aggravate root resorption. Displacement of teeth with resorptions that already exist or with deviating rootforms is riskfull.

Orthodontic treatment in the mixed dentition.

In the mixed dentition, the goal of orthodontic treatment is to maintain or improve arch integrity for the eruption of the permanent teeth, and to prevent the development of a more complicated malocclusion. The importance of correct diagnosis prior to the treatment of mixed-dentition patients cannot be over emphasized. An understanding of the mixed dentition's normal development allows clinicians to determine if the occlusion is developing outside of the normal range. Appropriate treatment can only be planned after this determination has been made. Once it is concluded that orthodontic treatme

Mucogingival considerations for the orthodontic patient.

Recession of the gingival margin during or subsequent to orthodontic therapy may occur as either pseudorecession or true recession. Assessment of both predisposing and possible precipitating factors will assist in evaluating the need for surgical intervention. Unfortunately, several parameters cannot be evaluated by objective measures. The clinician must address both objective and subjective criteria. Factors predisposing a site to recession are elucidated by evaluating the anatomy of the area, including the width of keratinized and attached gingiva, the facial-to-lingual dimension of both sof

Mucogingival considerations in orthodontic treatment.

Alterations in the mucogingival complex will occur during orthodontic tooth movement, but these are independent of the apico-coronal width (height) of the gingiva. The integrity of the periodontium can be maintained during orthodontic therapy also in areas that have only a minimal zone of gingiva. In terms of changes in the position of the soft tissue margin and in gingival dimensions, the important factors to consider are the direction of the tooth movement and the bucco-lingual thickness of the gingiva. Lingual tooth movement will result in an increased bucco-lingual thickness of the tissue

Mucogingival orthodontic and periodontal problems.

The absence of keratinized gingiva alone is not an indication for a periodontal surgical procedure. However, if recession increases during orthodontic treatment, then a gingival graft may be indicated. Orthodontic therapy and removal of a mandibular incisor where excessive gingival recession is present may be the indicated treatment.

[Orthodontic treatment in mouth breathing].

Patients with severe alterations of the maxillary growth pattern, due to long term predominant oral respiration, primarily need orthopaedic appliances, rather than common orthodontic mechanics. In cases of maxillary transversal deficiency, rapid expansion is indicated to recover an adequate width. Such treatment improves the ability for nasal ventilation. When the maxilla is sagittally underdeveloped, a facial mask is used to protract the entire maxilla. Other ways of treatment include oral screens, partial glossectomy, myofunctional therapy and respiratory gymnastics. Finally orthodontic trea

[Mucogingival aspects of orthodontic patients].

During the last twenty years the opinions about the necessity of an adequate gingival band for dental health are developing. Modern tendencies, nowadays, provide gingival increase only in few cases: 1. difficulties in plaque removing; 2. frenum connection in marginal gingiva; 3. gingival absence around prosthetic crown; 4. gingival recessions. The Authors, according to literature, data consider the indications to gingival increment and affirm the importance of a correct pre-orthodontic and periodontal evaluation in order to avoid periodontal attachment-loss using an easy surgery.

Nickel allergy and orthodontic treatment.

Nickel is the most common contact allergen affecting females in Europe and the USA. Nickel-containing metal alloys are extensively used for dental prostheses and orthodontic appliances. The aim of this study was to elucidate whether nickel sensitive persons are at greater risk of developing discomfort in the oral cavity during orthodontic treatment. Data from 1085 consecutive girls in active orthodontic treatment or in retention were collected by means of a questionnaire. No nickel allergic reaction on the oral mucosa was found. The majority of the girls with unspecific mucosal reactions and s

[Periodontal reaction to orthodontic measures].

In twelve rats, the right maxillary first molar was moved mesially by means of a fixed appliance. It was not possible to find any histopathological differences with forces of 10 N, 20 N and 30 N. We also found no different cellular reactions in the tension and pressure zones between the periods of three, six, ten and 14 days. In the treated rats the first molar was tilted. The mesial root was intruded. Local pressure zones were regularly formed around the mesial root and distal aspect of the alveolar crest of the bifurcation. It could be shown by vital polyfluorochrome staining that there was
