Transmigrant mandibular canines: a record of 28 cases and a retrospective review of the literature.

The transmigrant mandibular canine is a rare phenomenon. Most authors have described singular cases of unilateral or bilateral occurrence; however, a few authors have published more cases. This paper describes 28 cases exhibiting transmigratory canines. The observations are compared with observations from 39 earlier reports. Women are affected more than men. The left canine undergoes transmigration more commonly than does the right canine. Transmigration and impaction appear to be more common. Most of the patients do not have any symptoms, and these canines are often discovered at the radiolog

Physical properties of root cementum: part 11. Continuous vs intermittent controlled orthodontic forces on root resorption. A microcomputed-tomography study.

INTRODUCTION: There is still ambiguity about whether continuous or intermittent orthodontic forces produce more root resorption. This prospective randomized clinical trial was designed to compare root resorption with these 2 force application patterns. METHODS: The sample consisted of 16 maxillary first premolars from 8 patients who required bilateral extractions as part of their orthodontic treatment. In each subject, a fixed experimental appliance was placed on the maxillary teeth on each side, allowing a buccally directed force. The force was generated by a segmental wire of beta-titanium-

Multiple Impacted Supernumerary Teeth in a Non-syndromic Class III Malocclusion Patient: A Case Report.

Supernumerary teeth are considered a numerical dental anomaly characterized by an excess of teeth. They may appear as single, double, or, more rarely, multiple teeth and can be associated with various syndromes. A 21-year-old male patient presented to the orthodontic department at the Dental Consultation and Treatment Center in Rabat, Morocco, seeking care for esthetic concerns. Clinical examination revealed a Class III malocclusion with crowding, the absence of tooth 44, and arch asymmetry. Panoramic radiography revealed the impaction of tooth 44 along with five additional supernumerary teeth

Recurrent oral granuloma gravidarum during two pregnancies of a patient with orthodontic treatment: A case report.

The aim of this article was to present the medical management and follow-up of a recurrent oral granuloma gravidarum (OGG). OGG is a common benign tumour that can occur during pregnancy in response to poor oral hygiene and hormonal factors. Its identification and management by primary health care professionals is necessary, including an orientation to a dentist, if needed. Indeed, this lesion may induce troubles such as gingival bleeding, oral hygiene difficulties, and sometimes pain or eating difficulties, but also presents a high risk of relapse. An early twenties woman consulted several tim

Parathyroid hormone increases alveolar bone homoeostasis during orthodontic tooth movement in rats with periodontitis via crosstalk between STAT3 and β-catenin.

Periodontitis patients are at risk of alveolar bone loss during orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate whether intermittent parathyroid hormone (1-34) treatment (iPTH) could reduce alveolar bone loss during orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) in individuals with periodontitis and the underlying mechanism. A rat model of OTM in the context of periodontitis was established and alveolar bone loss was observed. The control, iPTH and iPTH + stattic groups received injections of vehicle, PTH and vehicle, or PTH and the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3)

Dental Therapeutic Applications of Nanotechnology and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The integration of nanotechnology and artificial intelligence (AI) in dentistry offers transformative potential for diagnostics, treatment, and prevention. Guided by AI, nanobots can deliver targeted anesthesia, enhance caries prevention strategies, and support orthodontic realignment, whereas advances in nanotechnology simultaneously optimize dental materials and enable more personalized care. To realize this potential, however, challenges ranging from cost and toxicity to data limitations must be addressed. Although some applications (eg, diagnostic nanoparticles) are closer to clinical use,

Periodontal cosmetic surgery.

Periodontal plastic procedures are performed to prevent or correct anatomical, developmental, traumatic, or plaque induced defects of the gingiva, alveolar mucosa, or bone. The majority of these procedures are performed in combination with restorative and/or orthodontic therapy with the primary goal of enhancing aesthetics. In this review some of the more prominent techniques currently available to address mucogingival deficiencies including pedicle grafts, free soft tissue grafts, and combination grafts are illustrated. In addition, potential complications associated with periodontal plastic

Does invasive surgical acceleration of orthodontic tooth movement increase root resorption? A harms-focused systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontically induced root resorption (RR) is frequent, and invasive surgically accelerated orthodontic (ISAO) procedures may increase it. This study aimed to assess the effect of ISAO on RR in teeth adjacent to surgically treated segments compared with conventional orthodontic treatment. METHODS: Following PRISMA, five major databases and four grey literature sources were searched through August 2025 without language or date restrictions. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials and comparative non-randomized intervention studies, including split-mouth designs, that r

A cross-temporal multimodal fusion system based on deep learning for orthodontic monitoring.

INTRODUCTION: In the treatment of malocclusion, continuous monitoring of the three-dimensional relationship between dental roots and the surrounding alveolar bone is essential for preventing complications from orthodontic procedures. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides detailed root and bone data, but its high radiation dose limits its frequent use, consequently necessitating an alternative for ongoing monitoring. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to develop a deep learning-based cross-temporal multimodal image fusion system for acquiring root and jawbone information without additional radiation

[Research progress on the pathogenesis of inflammatory external root resorption].

Inflammatory external root resorption (IERR) refers to the pathological process of dissolving the hard tissue on the outer surface of the tooth root by the body's own immune system under the stimulation of various physical and chemical factors such as infection, stress, trauma and orthodontic treatment. Severe IERR can lead to endodontic and periodontal diseases, and even the loss of teeth. Therefore, understanding the etiology and the pathogenic mechanism of IERR are of importance in its prevention and treatment. This article will review the etiology and the regulation mechanisms of IERR.

[Can inferior alveolar nerve lesions be avoided during sagittal splitting? Anatomy, surgical technique and neurological aspects].

The overriding principle in surgery should always be "nihil nocere". This is particularly true for maxillofacial surgery and assumes critical importance in orthognathic operations in which the prevention of motor and sensory nerve lesions should have priority. Considering that orthodontic surgery is increasingly done in an ever growing number of situations, it is obvious that this issue has become central to the decision-making process in each and every case. This contribution is designed to review the basic anatomy, to outline a useful surgical management concept and present the results obtai

A randomized controlled trial of orthodontist-based brief advice to prevent child obesity.

OBJECTIVE: We conducted a randomized controlled trial to test whether brief exercise and diet advice provided during child patient visits to their orthodontic office could improve diet, physical activity, and age-and-gender-adjusted BMI. METHODS: We enrolled orthodontic offices in Southern California and Tijuana, Mexico, and recruited their patients aged 8-16 to participate in a two-year study. At each office visit, staff provided the children with "prescriptions" for improving diet and exercise behaviors. Multilevel models, which adjusted for clustering, determined differential group effects
