BACKGROUND: Mental health conditions affect tens of millions of Americans. In recent years, particularly with the advent of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, there has been a burst of interest in mental health and mental illness among orthopaedic surgical patients. The mental health of orthopaedic surgeons themselves has also come into focus, with high reported rates of burnout and depression. The aim of this article was to evaluate trends in publication on mental health and mental illness in orthopaedic surgery.
METHODS: Web of Science and PubMed were queried to conduct a systematic rev

Fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS) is an evolving field that seeks to identify important anatomic structures or physiologic phenomena with helpful relevance to the execution of surgical procedures. Fluorescence labeling occurs generally via the administration of fluorescent reporters that may be molecularly targeted, enzyme-activated, or untargeted, vascular probes. Fluorescence guidance has substantially changed care strategies in numerous surgical fields; however, investigation and adoption in orthopaedic surgery have lagged. FGS shows the potential for improving patient care in orthopaedics

The Working Group of the German Orthopedic and Trauma Society (DGOU) on Tissue Regeneration has published recommendations on the indication of different surgical approaches for treatment of full-thickness cartilage defects in the knee joint in 2004, 2013 and 2016. Based upon new scientific knowledge and new developments, this recommendation is an update based upon the best clinical evidence available. In addition to prospective randomised controlled clinical trials, this also includes studies with a lower level of evidence. In the absence of evidence, the decision is based on a consensus proce

Prosthetic joint infections (PJI) represent one of the major problems in orthopedic prosthetic surgery. The incidence of PJIs varies according to the site of intervention, and different published case studies report occurrence at 0.5 to 3.0% in the event of first implants, with a significant greater risk in the case of prosthesis revisions. The diagnosis of prosthetic infections is seldom simple, needing a multi-specialist approach, which includes the accurate collection of patient anamnesis, its clinical evaluation, the evaluation of inflammation biomarkers, and the use of imaging techniques.

Osteoporosis is common, affecting more than 40 million people, and is associated with increased fracture risk, loss of independence, chronic pain, and disability. Osteoporosis is underdiagnosed and undertreated even after fracture where secondary fracture prevention has been shown to be cost effective in reducing further fracture risk and mortality. Osteoporosis is also undiagnosed in patients undergoing orthopaedic and spine surgery in up to one-third of cases and negatively affects outcomes, need for revision surgery, and risk of complications. The diagnosis of osteoporosis was previously ba

BACKGROUND: Hand-arm vibration syndrome is an occupational disease caused by exposure to hand-arm transmitted vibration. The Health and Safety Executive has set limits for vibration exposure, including an exposure action value (EAV), where steps should be taken to reduce exposure, and an exposure limit value (ELV), beyond which vibrating equipment must not be used for the rest of the working day.
AIMS: To measure hand-arm transmitted vibration among orthopaedic surgeons, who routinely use hand-operated saws.
METHODS: We undertook a cadaveric study measuring vibration associated with a tibial

This paper describes the biological characteristics of the metal tantalum (Ts) and the application status of tantalum in artificial joints, bone necrosis, spine, defects of bone and other aspects of bone. The early clinical application results of tantalum in bone diseases were satisfactory, but it is necessary to do further study of tantalum in a deep going way, and further detailed comparison between the tantalum with other metals as orthopedics implants. The advantage of tantalum materials as orthopedic implants still needs to be verified by a great deal of clinical cases for a long period o

Despite the enormous progress made during recent decades in the treatment of long-bone fractures, fracture healing is still haunted by complications and above all non-unions. Non-unions represent a particular challenge, and the difficulties surrounding their management are frequently underestimated. Knowledge of the epidemiology of long-bone non-union can assist the treating surgeon in the application of the optimum fracture treatment.

Since 2002, the Eckart Klobe vacuum has been used in our Service as an innovate and non-invasive procedure in patients with pectus excavatum. This vacuum method contributes not only to hold promise as a valuable adjunct in minimally invasive surgery, but also as an effective method to lift and fix the funnel for repairing pectus excavatum in some patients. Our experience is limited to the use of this device in 10 patients, during the Nuss technique. This procedure has been useful for safer passage of the introducer, and as a definitive treatment in a 10 years old girl with pectus excavatum and

The knee joint is often involved in rheumatoid arthritis. Despite ever-improving medical antirheumatic therapies, surgical treatment continues to play an important role in optimal multidisciplinary care. The aim of the present work is to process current orthopedic surgical therapy procedures on the knee joint according to disease stage. In the early phase, joint-preserving arthroscopic procedures for synovectomy are used. In advanced joint destruction, joint function can be restored by total knee arthroplasty. Of central importance for optimal patient care are individual treatment and good int

In addition to standard risks associated with all orthopedic surgical procedures, posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) reconstruction poses some relatively unique potential complications. These complications arise from a combination of several factors: the relative infrequency of PCL injuries, the lack of knowledge and experience in treating them, the proximity of neurovascular structures to the PCL, and the technically demanding nature of reconstructive procedures. This article discusses the anatomy, pathogenesis, and prevention of intraoperative and postoperative complications of PCL surgery in

INTRODUCTION: Hydroxyapatite deposition disease (HADD) is caused by the presence of hydroxyapatite crystals in periarticular spaces oftentimes leading to inflammation, pain, and decreased range of motion.
CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old right hand dominant female presented with three days of atraumatic right shoulder pain. Radiographs of the right shoulder were negative. Computed tomography revealed a hydroxyapatite deposit adjacent to the acromioclavicular joint. The patient was managed with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and a referral to orthopedic surgery.
CONCLUSION: Many instances of

The virally inactivated pasteurized FVIII concentrate Haemate P contains nearly intact vWF multimers. It is currently the treatment of choice to achieve satisfactory hemostasis for moderate to severe vWD and for patients with variants of vWD that cannot be adequately treated with DDAVP or for whom DDAVP is contraindicated. Therefore, we treated patients with type Ia, type IIa, type IIb and type III vWD with Haemate P. A correction of the hemostatic defect was seen in all patients. The type of bleeding events included 24 gastrointestinal, 18 other mucosal, 5 central nervous system, 15 orthopedi

Postoperative pain is a common and distressing complication following surgery, particularly among orthopedic patients, due to extensive tissue injury and invasive procedures. Poorly managed POP can delay recovery, prolong hospital stays, increase complications, and reduce patient satisfaction. Despite the known burden, evidence on patient satisfaction with postoperative pain management among adult orthopedic patients in Ethiopia remains limited. This study aimed to assess patient satisfaction with postoperative pain management and its associated factors among adult orthopedic surgery patients

Recent advancements in the treatment of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) have improved patient outcomes, but many still experience disease progression, potentially leading to joint replacement surgery. In this scoping review, we examine the relationship between PsA and orthopedic surgery, focusing on the risks and temporal trends of total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA), the prevalence of postoperative complications, and the effectiveness of these procedures in PsA. The included studies suggest that PsA patients have an overall higher risk of undergoing THA and TKA compared t

Exposure to ionizing radiation, such as that used in fluoroscopy, can lead to cataracts. This is relevant in orthopedic surgery as fluoroscopic procedures are commonly performed. In this study, we determined perceived level of: (1) personal risk, (2) awareness of risk for cataract formation due to ionizing radiation exposure, (3) awareness of occupational dose limits for ophthalmologic radiation exposure, (4) current radioprotective practices amongst orthopedic surgeons. Canadian Orthopaedic Association members were asked to participate and 264 responses (23%) were received. Many respondents b

Talectomy is a procedure that is undertaken rarely in modern orthopedic surgery; however, it has been performed for many years. Talectomy has been used most commonly in pediatric orthopedics with some degree of success in severe clubfoot deformity, arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, myelomeningocele, tuberculosis, and tumors. In adults, talectomy has been used in salvage procedures that involve nonunion of ankle fusions, failed total ankle arthroplasty, inflammatory arthropathy, neuroarthropathy, failed talar prostheses, failed pantalar fusions, adult neglected clubfoot, posttraumatic avascul
