A 5-year-old, male African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus) was presented with multiple, slow-growing, firm, bilateral masses around the dorsal orbital rims. Computer tomographic imaging revealed mild, incomplete bridging bone formation on the rostrodorsal aspects of the head. A moderate amount of smooth bone formation was identified at the rostrodorsal aspect to the left orbit, with minimal associated soft tissue swelling. Surgical biopsies were collected from the masses and histopathological analysis of the most rostral right mass showed well-differentiated bone, surrounded by dense fibrous

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of bone within extraskeletal soft tissue. The development of mature lamellar bone within soft tissues can be acquired in cases like trauma. Clinical manifestations of HO primarily include pain at the site of the extraskeletal ossification and limited range of motion or function when it involves a joint. This case report presents a 56-year-old man with severe HO. His past medical history included a traumatic hip dislocation in 1996. He denied any other past medical, family, or surgical history. This patient had severely limited range of motion and

PURPOSE: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a process by which bone forms abnormally in soft tissues. Known risk factors for developing HO include male sex, spinal cord injury, trauma, and surgery. We investigated additional risk factors in the development of HO after hip arthroplasty.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of electronic medical records of 4070 individuals who underwent hip arthroplasty from September 2010 to October 2019 at the University of California, San Francisco Hospital. Demographics, anthropometrics, medications, and comorbid conditions were used in logistic regre

INTRODUCTION: HO with concurrent chronic osteomyelitis is extremely rare. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first case in the English-language literature with wound infection and mature HO with chronic osteomyelitis caused by mixed infection of Pasteurella canis, Peptoniphilus coxii, Peptostreptococcus canis, and Fusobacterium nucleatum following licking of a wound by a domesticated dog.
CASE REPORT: A 49-year-old female with a painful, swollen, and purulent wound with bone exposure, measuring 2.5 cm × 1.5 cm, on the right leg was referred after an unsuccessful 3-month treatment regimen

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is common following surgery for elbow trauma and can have a significant impact on elbow function. The use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) for HO prophylaxis following total hip arthroplasty is well described, with the gold standard of indomethacin 25 mg tid for 6 weeks. However, there is sparse evidence relating to the elbow joint, particularly after elbow trauma surgery. We aim to investigate the efficacy of NSAIDs in the primary prevention of HO amongst all adult patients undergoing surgery for elbow trauma and identify risk factors for

OBJECTIVES: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a common complication in patients who have sustained high-energy trauma to the hip region. Traditionally, resection is performed after ectopic bone maturation. We hypothesized that early HO resection in patients with hip ankylosis after trauma can be performed with little chance of recurrence.
DESIGN: Retrospective clinical cohort.
SETTING: Level I Trauma Center PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: 14 patients with resection of HO about the hip performed by the senior author during a six-year period.
INTERVENTION: Early resection of Brooker Class III or IV HO.

INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic ossification may develop after major hip surgeries, thus preventive strategies including radiation therapy and non steroid anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly employed. There are certain concerns regarding the effects of radiation therapy on implant loosening and carcinogenesis. Our study aims to evaluate whether radiation therapy results in implant loosening or radiation-induced tumours in the long term.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a prospective study including 97 high-risk patients for heterotopic ossification who underwent total hip arthroplasty. Patients were

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a relatively common complication following hip surgery treated with open reduction and internal fixation, total arthroplasty or hemiarthroplasty. Development of HO after hip surgery is an important clinical issue as it can affect functional status. We aimed to determine whether there was association between severity of heterotopic ossification about the hip and the interval between the time of hip fracture and surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our retrospective study included 151 patients (age range 33-95 years) treated for hip fractures by hemiarthr

BACKGROUND: The cause of postoperative heterotopic ossification (HO) after cervical disc replacement (CDR) is unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the incidence of HO, its clinical significance, and whether the degree of preoperative degeneration was associated with its occurrence.
METHODS: Patients who had undergone CDR using the Prestige-LP disc with a minimum of 48 months of follow-up were included. The patients were divided into 2 groups stratified by the presence of HO. The clinical outcomes (visual analog scale for neck and arm pain, neck disability index, and Japane

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification is the most common extrinsic cause of elbow contracture and may lead to clinically important stiffness, and rarely, complete bony ankylosis. Surgery sometimes is performed to treat this problem, and published reports differ regarding the factors that are associated with success or failure after this operation and whether the procedure is effective for patients with elbow ankylosis.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We wished (1) to identify potential patient characteristics and modifiable risk factors that are associated with improvements in ROM after surgery for hetero

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a pathological bone formation process in which ectopic bone is formed in soft tissue. The formation of bone depends on the expression of the osteoblast phenotype. Earlier studies have shown conflicting results on the expression of phenotype markers of cells originating from HO and normal bone. The hypothesis of the present study is that cells from HO show an altered expression of osteoblast-specific phenotype markers compared to normal osteoblasts. The aims of the study were to further characterize the expression of osteoblast phenotypemark

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate (1) the magnitude of falsely elevated bone density results caused by heterotopic ossification (HO) around the hip and (2) effect of age of patients when the measurement was taken, age of patients at injury, and age of injury (time since event) to the prevalence of HO.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We blindly analyzed plain radiographs of the hip [(obtained within 1 month of dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA)] in 107 spinal cord injured (SCI) patients for HO and matched the result to the three regions of interest (ROI): the femoral neck, Ward's triangle, and the trochanter.

Open reduction and internal fixation was performed on 50 displaced acetabular fractures in 49 patients by nine different attending surgeons over a 10-year period. At an average follow-up of 38 months, poor results were noted clinically in 38% and radiographically in 40%. The incidence of short- and long-term complications was greater than in other studies. Particularly distressing was the 58% incidence of heterotopic ossification (HO). Twenty-four percent had grade III or IV; five hips were autofused and the remainder had 40-60% loss of motion. There was no correlation of HO with age, sex, fra

Fracture care and osteogeneic response deviate significantly from normal in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) or spinal cord injury (SCI). In TBI open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) are recommended whenever possible to improve mobilization in the face of spasticity and the formation of heterotopic ossification (HO). In the patient with SCI, immobility and paralysis negatively alter healing. A fracture above the level of SCI, although not altered in healing, when treated by ORIF will facilitate transfer training and self care. Lower extremity fractures in SCI have a high incide

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a pathological process, featured by the aberrant mature bone tissue in soft tissues outside the normal skeletal system, commonly occurring following trauma or major joint surgery. Ribosomal RNA Processing 12 Homolog (RRP12) has been confirmed to display multiple roles in ribosome synthesis, DNA damage, cell cycle and cell differentiation processes. However, the regulatory influences of RRP12 in HO progression keep vague and require further investigation. In this project, it was illustrated that RRP12 expression was markedly up-regulated in HO mice. Inhibition o

UNLABELLED: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a pathological process in which ectopic bone tissue forms within soft tissues such as tendons, resulting in pain, limited range of motion, and functional disability that reduces the quality of life. In recent years, tendon stem/progenitor cells (TSPCs) have been considered a key cellular source of HO due to their inherent multilineage differentiation potential. This review aims to systematically elaborate on the advances in the functional regulation and mechanisms of TSPCs in HO. Existing evidence (including lineage tracing and clinical studies) ind

MicroRNAs are small non-coding RNAs that regulate cellular pathways by targeting multiple mRNAs, playing critical roles in skeletal development and homeostasis. Our previous miRNA profiling studies identified higher levels of miR-127-3p in the hypertrophic zone of developing human growth plates while another group found this miRNA to be more highly expressed in murine hindlimb cartilage compared to calvarial bone. Other published work revealed elevated circulating miR-127-3p levels in osteoporotic patients and in long bones of ovariectomized mice. Collectively, these findings suggest a role fo

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with heterotopic ossification (HO) formation following cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA), including postoperative non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: CDA preserves segmental motion in treating cervical degenerative disc disease but is susceptible to HO formation, which may compromise surgical outcomes. While NSAID prophylaxis is well-established in total hip arthroplasty to reduce HO risk, its role in CDA remains underexplored.
METHODS: A retrospective review was cond
