Osteopetrosis is a hereditary form of sclerosing bone dysplasia with various radiological and clinical presentations. The autosomal recessive type, also known as malignant osteopetrosis, is the most severe type, with the early onset of manifestations. A 5-month-old infant was admitted to our hospital with recurrent respiratory tract infections. Chest X-ray and skeletal survey revealed the classic findings of osteopetrosis, including diffuse osteosclerosis and bone within a bone appearance. At follow-up, the patient presented with, thickened calvarium, multiple prominent encephaloceles, and dur…

We report a patient with Langerhans-cell histiocytosis (LCH) localized to the hard palate that was later proven to be associated with Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD), involving the right breast, skeleton, retroperitoneum and left orbit. The diagnosis was based on the symmetric osteosclerosis of the long bones diaphyses (tibias and fibulas), breast lump histopathological/immunohistochemical findings and retroperitoneum and left orbit images in magnetic resonance. Mammary involvement by ECD is an extremely rare condition, which should be differentiated from some benign and malignant mimickers, esp…

The author compares dental, periodontal, and bone system status of children living in two regions characterized by different degrees and patterns of environmental pollution. Children living in regions polluted by aluminum plant waste (sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, dust, hydrogen fluoride) developed specific abnormalities because of body poisoning with fluorides, namely, dental fluorosis, osteoporosis and osteosclerosis of the bones; periodontal diseases in these children were more incident than in controls. These findings prompted the development of a complex of sanitary, …

Nine horses with clinical and radiographic findings of cervical vertebral malformation that were necropsied and examined using frozen cervical spinal cord cross sections were reviewed. Only cases with actual distortion of the spinal cord due to compression were selected. The goal of the study was to determine the morphologic features responsible for narrowing of the spinal canal and compression of the spinal cord. In individual cases, bony changes are associated with osteochondrosis and osteomyelitis of the dorsal articular facets and osteosclerosis of the dorsal cervical lamina. Soft tissue p…

Bone alterations in the patients undergoing periodic dialysis represent a frequent and invalidating complication and cause the pattern called uremic osteodystrophy. In this study we have examined 173 pelvic X-rays of 73 patients affected with chronic renal insufficiency and undergoing periodic dialysis. The results indicate the presence of all the lesions characterizing uremic osteodystrophy. Arterial calcifications and osteoporosis are the most frequent patterns; with various incidence, osteomalacia, osteitis fibrosa, osteosclerosis and brown tumors are associated. In this group of patients, …

Radiography disclosed an incomplete femoral fracture and osteosclerosis. Bone survey revealed diffuse, symmetric osteosclerosis of both the axial and the appendicular skeleton. The long bones showed areas of almost complete obliteration of the medullary canal, along with prominent hyperostosis. Additionally, a "bone-wit …

Skeletal fluorosis is a rare toxic osteopathy characterized by massive bone fixation of fluoride. The disease occurs as an endemic problem in some parts of the world and is the result of prolonged ingestion or rarely by inhalation of high amounts of fluoride. Radiographic presentation is mainly characterized by bone changes with osteocondensation and later ossification of many ligaments and interosseous membranes. Skeletal fluorosis is not clinically obvious and can be confused with other rheumatologic disorders. Its severity lies in the development of skeletal deformities and neurological com

Osteopathia striata with cranial sclerosis (OSCS) is a rare but well-described pathology characterized by abnormalities in bone deposition in the axial and cranial skeleton as well as other abnormalities and associated deficits. These skeletal abnormalities can lead to significant intra-operative challenges for the surgeon and influence outcomes for the patient. In this report, we present a case of a patient with OSCS who was involved in a traumatic motor vehicle crash and underwent posterior cervico-thoracic fusion for a T4 chance fracture. Bony abnormalities in the cervico-thoracic spine pre

OBJECTIVE: Correct application of the Kellgren and Lawrence (K&L) classification system is difficult due to inexact wording of the descriptors. We summarised different descriptions and searched for evidence on the impact of such variations on classification of knee osteoarthritis (OA) in epidemiological studies.
METHODS: We searched Medline/Pubmed (1966 to August 2006) for studies of epidemiological cohorts that professed use of the original K&L scale (grades 0-4, with 0 being normal and 4 severe OA), and recorded their descriptions of the five grades. The descriptions were compared with each

We reviewed the CT studies of 176 patients with biopsy-proven inflammatory pseudotumour of the orbit, in an attempt to establish the incidence of bone sclerosis in this condition. We found 20 patients (11.5%) to show definite bone sclerosis and/or hyperostosis, and in a further 10 (6%) there was probable sclerosis, giving a total of 30 patients (17%) with some evidence of bony change. Bone-window films were available for a minority of patients, and the frequency of sclerosis was therefore probably underestimated. This feature, which presumably represents a low-grade, chronic sterile osteitis,
