[Acute ear trauma caused by failure of mobile phone/cellular phone].

The case of acute acoustic and burn ear trauma caused by mobile phone failure is presented. A woman aged 24 after dialling a phone number and putting a phone into the ear heard a sound of high frequency and intensity. At the same time she felt a pain and heat and there was also a smoke from the phone. With otoscopic examination a burn of external acoustic duct (I0) and sensitive hearing loss (examination made with tuning forks) were stated. The patient did not agree to stay in hospital and she was administered prednizone, trimetazidin and xantylol nicotinate. Audiometric examination, which was

Realtime telemedicine for paediatric otolaryngology pre-admission screening.

We conducted a feasibility study to examine whether a paediatric patient at a regional hospital could be assessed by an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist via videoconference, therefore saving at least one journey to the tertiary hospital for a pre-admission appointment. A video-otoscope was used with standard videoconference equipment, and realtime images were transmitted at a bandwidth of 384 kbit/s. In all, 13 telepaediatric ENT clinics were conducted between November 2003 and April 2005, and 98 consultations were facilitated for 64 patients. The main reasons for referral were recurrent

External and middle ear status related to evoked otoacoustic emission in neonates.

OBJECTIVE: Screening auditory status prior to neonatal hospital discharge to identify newborns with severe hearing impairment is an important pediatric care priority. Evoked otoacoustic emission (OAE) testing is a quick noninvasive method. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between external auditory canal and middle ear status with click-evoked OAE. It was hypothesized that vernix caseosa, debris in the ear canal, and middle ear fluid contribute to the OAE fail rate. DESIGN: All neonates had an initial OAE examination. A second investigator, "blinded" to the results,

An education model for otitis media care field-tested in Latin America.

The World Health Organization has designated the teaching of otitis media management skills a "priority" status. Effective treatment of ear disease requires that the physician be both informationally educated as well as physically trained to use otoscopy. Little is known about how well this education can be provided in a short time and in a foreign country. To more objectively assess teaching effect, results of an education session for rural Mexican pediatric primary-care providers who were given an intensive otitis media lecture and otoscopy skills workshop in 1990 were evaluated. To test imm

Screening recommendations for the elderly.

BACKGROUND: Studies have documented the potential contributions of preventive health care programs. Yet little is known about which screening tests should be included in public health programs for older persons. This study offers recommendations regarding these tests. METHODS: The recommendations come from synthesizing the findings of the US Preventive Services Task Force, the literature, and the consensus of experts in geriatrics, gerontology, and health policy research. The literature was evaluated to identify methodologically sound studies of the prevalence of selected disorders and benefi

Immitance audiometry.

Immitance audiometry is a safe, simple, reliable, and relatively objective method of determining middle-ear function that provides advantages for examining the difficult patient because minimal cooperation is needed. Acoustic-immitance measurements obtain sophisticated data that give us valuable information about the middle ear mechanism as a whole. It can be used in a quiet office environment. Immitance audiometry can confirm a doubtful otoscopic diagnosis and screen for ear disease. There are limitations to observer reliability with otoscopy, which has good sensitivity but poor specificity,

The inferiorly based pharyngoplasty: effects on chronic otitis media with effusion.

Conflicting reports in the literature on the relationship between the inferiorly based pharyngeal flap and otitis media with effusion (OME) motivated a prospective study on 51 children between 3 and 12 years of age suffering from velopharyngeal incompetence. The patient group consisted of 34 children with cleft palate and 17 children with congenitally short palate. The male-female ratio was 37 to 14, showing no differences regarding physical disability. Each child underwent an inferiorly based pharyngoplasty. Repeated otoscopic, tympanometric, and audiometric examinations revealed that prior t

Otological and audiological outcomes five years after tympanostomy in early childhood.

OBJECTIVE: Ventilation tubes in the treatment of otitis media in young children remain controversial. Despite abundant research, few prospective long-term follow-up studies have included even a minority of patients under 1 year old. We investigated long-term otological and audiological outcomes in children with recurrent acute otitis media and otitis media with effusion, who were treated early with ventilation tubes. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective follow-up. METHODS: Three hundred five children under 17 months of age received a primary tympanostomy in the Central Hospital of Central Finland (Jyvä

Timing Matters? Investigating the Impact of Age at Palatal Closure on Hearing in Filipino Individuals with Cleft Palate.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined ear and hearing outcomes in Filipino individuals with a cleft palate with/without a cleft lip and investigated whether age at palatal closure is associated with the presence or absence of hearing loss. METHODS: Participants were individuals with a repaired cleft palate with/without a cleft lip recruited from the Tebow CURE hospital (Davao, Philippines). An anamnestic interview assessed the presence of hearing-related symptoms. Otoscopic examination and pure-tone audiometry were performed bilaterally to evaluate external ear anatomy and hearing sensitivity, re

Evaluation of Cochlear Function, Hidden Hearing Loss, and Auditory Temporal Processing in Tinnitus Patients with Normal Audiograms.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Some patients complain of tinnitus despite having normal conventional audiograms. However, normal audiograms don't exclude the presence of subtle cochlear or neural damage. The study's objective was to assess cochlear function and the cochlear nerve in tinnitus patients with normal audiograms, as well as assessing temporal processing in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included a total of 40 participants: 20 tinnitus patients with normal audiograms and 20 healthy controls without tinnitus. All participants underwent otoscopic examination, tympanomet

Middle ear malformations combined with cerebrospinal fluid otorrhea: A case report.

RATIONALE: Middle ear malformations (MEMs) encompass a diverse spectrum of congenital anomalies that significantly impair auditory function. They account for approximately 0.5% to 3% of conductive hearing loss cases, with etiologies involving both genetic and environmental factors. Clinically, MEMs complicated by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) otorrhea are extremely rare. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 17-year-old male presented with right-sided hearing loss of over 7 years' duration. Otoscopic examination revealed a perforation in pars flaccid of the tympanic membrane. Pure-tone audiometry confirmed moderat

Masked Mastoiditis Presenting As Pneumococcal Meningoencephalitis in an Elderly Patient: A Diagnostic Pitfall in the Emergency Department.

Otogenic infections remain a potentially under-recognized cause of pneumococcal meningoencephalitis in adults. In elderly patients, acute mastoiditis may present without overt otological findings ("masked mastoiditis"), delaying diagnosis and increasing the risk of intracranial complications. An 86-year-old unvaccinated male patient with multiple comorbidities initially presented to the emergency department with non-specific upper respiratory symptoms and normal otoscopy and was discharged with presumed viral infection. Four days later, he returned with acute neurological deterioration and hem

Extraskeletal Chondroma in the Middle Ear: A Case Report.

Extraskeletal chondroma, also known as soft tissue chondroma, is a benign cartilaginous tumor most commonly found in the hands and feet. The occurrence of extraskeletal chondroma in the external auditory canal is extremely rare. We report the first case of extraskeletal chondroma arising in the left middle ear. A 68-year-old female was referred to our department with a diagnosis of a left external - middle ear tumor accompanied by left-sided hearing loss. Otoscopic examination revealed a mass contacting the posterior surface of the anterosuperior quadrant of the tympanic membrane, protruding o

Evaluation of a Photopolymerized Gelatin Hydrogel Network with bFGF-Loaded Alginate Microspheres for Tympanic Membrane Perforation Repair in Rats.

Tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) often leads to hearing loss and requires effective repair strategies. However, existing surgical options are invasive and lack ideal biomaterials for scaffold-based healing. Herein, we present a custom-engineered mechano-acoustic responsive hydrogel incorporating bFGF-loaded sodium alginate microspheres, designed for controlled drug release and tissue regeneration under dual stimulation: vibrational simulation and low-frequency acoustic waves (generated by radio devices) - representing its first transition from in vitro characterization to in vivo regenerati
