Labor length among overweight and obese women undergoing induction of labor.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal weight is thought to impact labor. With rising rates of obesity and inductions, we sought to evaluate labor times among induced women by body mass index (BMI) category. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of term inductions from 2005 to 2010. BMI categories were: normal weight (NW), overweight (OW), and obese (Ob) (18.5-24.9, 25-29.9, ≥30 kg/m(2)). Kruskal-Wallis tests compared median latent labor (LL) length and active labor (AL) length. Chi-square determined associations. Multivariable logistic regression controlled for confounders. Analyses were stratified by parity. R…

Acute care costs in overweight children: a pediatric urban cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence indicates obese children have increased health care utilization. It is unknown if this is true within the emergency department (ED) setting. Our purpose is to determine if overweight children presenting for emergency care have increased resource utilization over normal weight peers. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of children 2 to <18 years old presenting to a pediatric ED in 2007. Overweight was defined as >95th percentile sex-specific weight-for-age, and normal weight was defined as ≤95(th) percentile. We used a subsample validation to compare these s…

Low adiponectin in overweight/obese women: association with diabetes during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in diabetes and hypertension outcomes persist in the United States (U.S.), and worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was in part due to suboptimal implementation of telehealth in U.S. safety-net settings alongside the pre-existing "digital divide" - structural determinants that limit access to digital tools by marginalized communities. To improve health equity, it is critical that health systems in the U.S. integrate principles of digital and health literacy for more equitable chronic disease care. METHODS: We are conducting a 2x2

Evidence that cranberry juice may improve augmentation index in overweight men.

The stiffening of arteries is a key step in atherogenesis leading to cardiovascular disease. It has been suggested that dietary polyphenols may be cardioprotective through possible favorable effects on oxidative stress and vascular function. The present study was undertaken in order to examine the effect of consuming low-calorie cranberry juice cocktail (CJC), a source of polyphenols, on arterial stiffness in abdominally obese men. We hypothesize that regular CJC consumption will reduce circulating oxidized low-density lipoproteins concentrations and have a beneficial impact on endothelial fun

Musculoskeletal injuries among overweight army trainees: incidence and health care utilization.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal injuries are a major cause of morbidity in military training. They are more common among overweight/obese individuals, and the prevalence of overweight/obesity in the military has increased. During strong economic periods, the military can be challenged to recruit enough qualified personnel, and physical standards are sometimes relaxed. AIMS: This study was conducted to compare the incidence of and outpatient utilization for training-related overuse injuries among men who were over body fat (OBF) standards compared with those who were weight qualified (WQ). METHOD…

Exertional heat illness among overweight U.S. Army recruits in basic training.

INTRODUCTION: Heat illness has not declined in the U.S. military despite preventive measures. The increase in overweight recruits entering the U.S. military may lead to an increase in heat-related events. This study compares the risk of heat illness among U.S. Army recruits who exceeded body fat standards at accession to those who met standards. METHODS: Recruits with excess body fat and qualified applicants to the Army were required to take a preaccession fitness test during the study period (February 2005 through September 2006). The test included a 5-min step test and 1-min push-up challen…

Does lumbar decompression in overweight patients assist in postoperative weight loss?

STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review. OBJECTIVE: To determine if there is a weight change in overweight patients following lumbar decompression with or without fusion for lumbar degenerative conditions. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND: Anecdotal evidence suggests obesity is a risk factor for recurrent disc herniation or adjacent segment degeneration after lumbar surgery. Weight loss after surgery therefore may be important to reduce risk of these problems. Theoretically, patients who recover may be able to increase exercise tolerance and therefore the possibility for weight loss is more likely. If spine pa…

Weight loss in overweight and obese patients following successful lumbar decompression.

BACKGROUND: Neurogenic claudication secondary to lumbar stenosis is often cited by overweight and obese patients as a factor limiting their ability to lose weight. Many patients believe that they will be able to increase their activity and subsequently lose weight following relief of symptoms. The objective of this study was to evaluate weight loss in overweight and obese patients who obtained substantial pain relief after lumbar decompression surgery for spinal stenosis. METHODS: Changes in the body weight and body mass index of overweight and obese patients after lumbar decompression surger…

Diabetic and overweight cats have altered gut microbial diversity and composition.

Despite similarities in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus in humans and cats, the specific role of the gut microbiota in feline diabetes remains unclear. We determined the ileal microbiota composition of lean, overweight, and diabetic cats, and assessed the association of the ileal gut microbiota with key markers of insulin signaling and glucose regulation in the pancreas and muscle, and liver fat content. Ileal contents were collected from a client-owned population of total 32 (lean, n = 13; overweight, n = 8; diabetic=11) cats, and DNA extracted for 16S rRNA analyses. Results r…

Overweight predisposes to microvascular obstruction: insights from the TATORT-NSTEMI trial.

Microvascular obstruction (MVO) is a phenomenon associated with worse outcome after acute myocardial infarction. While some studies suggested a benefit of an increased body mass index (BMI) in terms of MVO occurrence in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), there are currently no data available on the influence of overweight on the development of MVO in Non-STEMI (NSTEMI). Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the association between MVO and BMI in NSTEMI patients. This study investigated a sub-cohort of the TATORT-NSTEMI trial. Overall, 354 patients were included with a median age o…

Investigating Overweight and Obesity Risk in Shift Workers Using Omics Technologies.

Night shift workers are at higher risk of developing overweight and obesity. The disruption of the physiological circadian rhythm leads to metabolic alterations, such as decreased insulin sensitivity, increased adipogenesis, and inflammation, with effects on their health and leading, among other diseases, to obesity. Omics technologies represent novel investigation tools to understand in depth the biological mechanisms behind the circadian disruption and consequent effects on metabolism. The data obtained from the use of omics technologies in the field of transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolom…
