The current coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, which originated in Wuhan, China, has raised significant social, psychological and economic concerns in addition to direct medical issues. The rapid spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus (SARS-CoV)-2 to almost every country on the globe and the failure to contain the infections have contributed to fear and panic worldwide. The lack of available and efficient antiviral drugs or vaccines has further worsened the situation. For these reasons, it cannot be overstated that an accelerated effort for the development of novel drugs and vacci

After the initial outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic (now called COVID-19)-in Wuhan, China-and its subsequent fast dispersion throughout the world, many questions regarding its pathogenesis, genetic evolution, prevention, and transmission routes remain unanswered but fast explored. More than 100,000 confirmed, infected cases within a relatively short period of time globally corroborated the presumption that a pandemic will develop; such a pandemic will require a suite of global intervention measures. Consequently, different countries have reacted differently to the COVID-19 outbreak, but a un

Plague has a long history on the European continent, with evidence of the disease dating back to the Stone Age. Plague epidemics in Europe during the First and Second Pandemics, including the Black Death, are infamous for their widespread mortality and lasting social and economic impact. Yet, Europe still experienced plague outbreaks during the Third Pandemic, which began in China and spread globally at the end of the nineteenth century. The digitization of international records of notifiable diseases, including plague, has enabled us to retrace the introductions of the disease to Europe from …

Existing mortality estimates assert that the Justinianic Plague (circa 541 to 750 CE) caused tens of millions of deaths throughout the Mediterranean world and Europe, helping to end antiquity and start the Middle Ages. In this article, we argue that this paradigm does not fit the evidence. We examine a series of independent quantitative and qualitative datasets that are directly or indirectly linked to demographic and economic trends during this two-century period: Written sources, legislation, coinage, papyri, inscriptions, pollen, ancient DNA, and mortuary archaeology. Three years after the pandemic, major advances have been made in our understanding of the innate and adaptive immune responses to the influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus and those responses' contribution to the immunopathology associated with this infection. Severe disease is characterized by early secretion of proinflammatory and immunomodulatory cytokines. This cytokine secretion persisted in patients with severe viral pneumonia and was directly associated with the degree of viral replication in the respiratory tract. Cytokines play important roles in the antiviral defense, but persistent hypercyto

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) of humans is caused by two lentiviruses, human immunodeficiency viruses types 1 and 2 (HIV-1 and HIV-2). Here, we describe the origins and evolution of these viruses, and the circumstances that led to the AIDS pandemic. Both HIVs are the result of multiple cross-species transmissions of simian immunodeficiency viruses (SIVs) naturally infecting African primates. Most of these transfers resulted in viruses that spread in humans to only a limited extent. However, one transmission event, involving SIVcpz from chimpanzees in southeastern Cameroon, gave ris

The 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic took health care workers worldwide by surprise. Early in the course of the pandemic it was determined that children and pregnant women were at high risk of increased morbidity and mortality from the novel influenza virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state and local public health officials quickly rallied to develop treatment guidelines for the new strain of influenza A, including emergency approvals for off-label use of some antiviral drugs. Prevention of the spread of influenza via vaccination and environmental controls is critical to th

In Japan, influenza like epidemics were described many times since Heian era. However, Spanish flu as the modern medicine invaded Japan in 1918, thus almost infected 390,000 patients died with associated pneumonia. After the discovery of influenza virus in 1933, Japan experienced pandemic influenza--Asian flu(H2N2) in 1957. After about 10 years, Hong Kong flu (H3N2) came to Japan at 1968. However, we had many reliable antibiotics but had not any antiviral drug at the early time. After year 2000, we fortunately obtained reliable three antiviral drugs such as amantadine, oseltamivir and zanamivi

The clinical picture in severe cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza is markedly different from the disease pattern seen during epidemics of seasonal influenza, in that many of those affected were previously healthy young people. Current predictions estimate that, during a pandemic wave, 12-30% of the population will develop clinical influenza (compared with 5-15% for seasonal influenza) with 4% of those patients requiring hospital admissions and one in five requiring critical care. This review covers the background, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment. The role of immunization a

Ending the silent pandemic of unsafe abortion is an urgent public-health and human-rights imperative. As with other more visible global-health issues, this scourge threatens women throughout the developing world. Every year, about 19-20 million abortions are done by individuals without the requisite skills, or in environments below minimum medical standards, or both. Nearly all unsafe abortions (97%) are in developing countries. An estimated 68 000 women die as a result, and millions more have complications, many permanent. Important causes of death include haemorrhage, infection, and poisonin

During the past year, the public has become keenly aware of the threat of emerging infectious diseases with the global spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), the continuing threat of bioterrorism, the proliferation of West Nile virus, and the discovery of human cases of monkeypox in the United States. At the same time, an old foe has again raised its head, reminding us that our worst nightmare may not be a new one. In 2003, highly pathogenic strains of avian influenza virus, including the H5N1 and H7N7 subtypes, again crossed from birds to humans and caused fatal disease. Direct a

Children responsible for their own survival exist in all countries. Despite social and cultural differences between street youth in developing countries versus homeless youth in developed countries, the predictors and correlates of homelessness are similar among youth. The AIDS pandemic is inextricably linked to homelessness and is a particularly devastating threat to the welfare of the world's disenfranchised youth, as they are continually forced into multiple HIV-related high risk situations and behaviors. Specific recommendations regarding clinical care, prevention programs, research, and t

Physicians will recognize Lyme disease faster if they maintain a high index of suspicion in a young patient with arthritis accompanied by negative rheumatoid factor and antinuclear antibody in combination with cardiac conduction problems or lymphocytic meningitis. The Lyme spirochete (Borrelia burgdorferi) has notable sensitivity to tetracycline, penicillin, and erythromycin; therefore, proper and complete treatment of the disease, once it is identified, can be easily achieved. Finkel observed that Lyme disease manifests itself as a "great imitator," as do many disorders caused by a spirochete

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization (WHO) Pandemic Agreement, adopted in May 2025, represents a major step toward strengthening global pandemic governance after COVID-19. However, the principle of Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities (CBDR-RC) was not incorporated into the legally binding provisions of the Agreement, leaving unresolved questions regarding how equity-based obligations should be implemented in future pandemic preparedness and response.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) involves complex immunological mechanisms, and clinical presentation may be influenced by environmental factors and access to medical services. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its clinical and evolutionary profile remains insufficiently characterized.
OBJECTIVES: To compare pandemic and post-pandemic pediatric INS regarding demographic, clinical and biological characteristics and early disease evolution, and to explore factors associated with infection-related onset and corticosteroid response.
METHODS: Single-center retrospect

AIMS: The COVID-19 pandemic is often portrayed as a universal mental health crisis, especially in studies lacking pre-pandemic data. Research including pre-pandemic assessments nonetheless yields mixed results, making the pandemic's impact unclear, particularly when considering differences between general and clinical populations (defined as individuals with prior mental disorder diagnoses). This study examined depression and anxiety trajectories from pre-pandemic to pandemic phases in general and clinical populations. It also explored how symptom trajectories varied by sociodemographic and pa

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on worldwide trade and human activities extended even to ocean depths, resulting in changes in underwater acoustic environments. This study emphasizes the deep water soundscape of the Laccadive Sea by performing passive acoustic measurements over two distinct periods-November 2020-May 2021 and March 2022-December 2022-to reveal temporal variations and underlying patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic and post-pandemic periods. This research focuses on a comprehensive analysis of ambient noise spanning a frequency range from 20 to 2000 Hz. Biophonic sources do
