Mesenteric panniculitis is an aseptic inflammation of mesenteric fat. Before the age of ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT), mesenteric panniculitis was rarely diagnosed, but today the disorder is more commonly encountered, often as an incidental imaging finding. Its exact cause remains unknown. This review illustrates the characteristic US and CT features of mesenteric panniculitis and discusses its differential diagnosis.

Factitious disorders may trouble any physician during his/her career. A considerable number of cases of Munchausen's syndrome (self-induced disorder) are misdiagnosed in clinical practice. A 36-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of fever and abdominal pain. Physical examination showed signs of inflammation of the abdominal wall, and histological examination revealed severe panniculitis. We investigated various aetiologic factors that could probably be related to fat necrosis, but we found no explanation of the phenomenon until we verified the diagnosis of Munchausen's syndrome…

OBJECTIVE: to describe the findings that allowed us to detect mesenteric panniculitis in sonographic abdominal studies.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: we retrospectively evaluated the images of 10 patients diagnosed of mesenteric panniculitis, initially detected by sonography. Diagnosis was confirmed by computed tomography (CT) in all cases, and by surgical biopsy in one of them. Two patients were symptomatic, and it was an incidental finding in the remaining eight cases.
RESULTS: the characteristic sonographic appearance consisted of thickening of mesenteric fat around mesenteric vessels, with an el…

We report a 3-year-old girl with a 12-month history of an acquired lipoatrophy that was rapidly progressive. Her karyotype revealed additional material on chromosome 10 at the 10q26 location. The human pancreatic lipase gene maps to chromosome 10q24-26, and we postulate an association. Lipoatrophic panniculitis describes the panniculitides in which atrophy is a feature. The classification of these diseases is confusing in the literature and the precise diagnosis still relies on a combination of clinical and laboratory assessment. Our finding of a chromosomal abnormality on chromosome 10q26 has…

A case of 12 year-old Nigerian male is presented. He had an unusual variant of Weber-Christian disease and manifested massive subcutaneous indurations and nodules limited to the cheeks, lips, left pectoral, infraclavicular and supraclavicular areas. A wedge biopsy revealed suppurative granulomatous eosinophilic panniculitis. Despite exhaustive investigations, no obvious trigger of the panniculitis could be identified. Response to corticosteroids and to empirical trials with other drugs was poor, and the outcome was fatal. We believe this is the first report from Nigeria of this rare variant of…

We present two fatal cases of cytophagic panniculitis (CP) and haemophagocytic syndrome (HPS). In the first of these, there was an underlying T-cell lymphoma but in the second no associated disease was found. HPS is a frequently fatal disorder of immune regulation, characterized by fever, histiocytic haemophagocytosis, hepatosplenomegaly, pancytopenia, hypertriglyceridaemia and coagulopathy; CP is a less common manifestation. A number of benign and malignant conditions may present with HPS, the clinical findings and investigations aiding in determining an underlying disorder. Therapy is both s…

Panniculitis is caused by a heterogeneous group of clinical entities that tend to manifest themselves as erythematous-violaceous subcutaneous nodules on the legs. In addition to associations with rheumatic diseases including vasculitis, its causes may include various infections. The microorganisms most commonly involved are bacteria and fungi. Among the latter, Candida Sp,, Nocardia Sp., Sporotrichosis, cryptococcosis, histoplasmosis, cromomycosis, and inter alia, have been described. We present an immu-nocompetent patient with a persistent, neutrophilic, chronic septal panniculitis caused by …

The rarest and hardly known complication of pancreas diseases is the subcutaneous nodular fat necrosis, a special type of panniculitides. It … n the blood and urine. Since the underlying pancreas diseases may be asymptomatic, the pancreatogen panniculitis should be considered as a noteworthy marker of them. The histologic findings are pathognomic. In pancreatogen panniculitis in all likelihood the remote foci of adiponecrosis are due to the local action of pancreatic lipolytic enzymes carried by the …

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic panniculitis is characterized by a prominent infiltration of subcutaneous fat with eosinophils. It has been identified in patients who have a variety of associated clinical conditions.
OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to describe clinical conditions associated with eosinophilic panniculitis.
METHODS: We describe five patients with eosinophilic panniculitis. These patients had a variety of clinical conditions including arthropod bites, gnathostomiasis, and polyarteritis nodosa. We review the literature on patients with eosinophilic panniculitis.
RESULTS: Eosinophilic panni…

Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare inflammatory process of the mesenteric fat with unknown etiology. We report two pathologically proven cases of mesenteric panniculitis. Both patients presented with abdominal pain and palpable masses. In one patient, computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a well-defined heterogenous mass containing fat density at the mesocolon. In the other patient, CT showed a fatty mass encompassing mesenteric vessels at the root of the mesentery. Although the definite diagnosis of mesenteric panniculitis depends on histopathology, recognition of CT features is helpful in the…

An immunohistochemical study on a case of lupus erythematosus panniculitis (LEP), without discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) signs, showed that the cells in skin infiltrates were immunologically committed lymphocytes (OKT4, OKT8, OKT11 and HLA-DR positive cells) and elements of the monocyte-macrophage lineage (Leu M3 and Leu M5 positive). No immunophenotypically identifiable B-lymphocytes were seen. Immunofluorescent IgG, IgM, C3 and C4 deposits were found in blood vessel walls of the deep dermis. These findings, similar to that described in the skin change…
