Ultrastructural changes in the parathyroid glands of dexamethasone-treated mice were examined. Many chief cells of the treated mice contained a decreased number of prosecretory granules, secretory granules and storage granules, and an increased number of lipid droplets, compared with the control mice. In addition, myelin-like structures associated with cisternae of the granular endoplasmic reticulum were observed in the parathyroid glands of the treated mice. These findings suggest that cellular activity of the parathyroid gland may be suppressed by dexamethasone.

The morphological features of a functional parathyroid carcinoma in a 34-year-old female are presented. The case was unique in the high frequency of mitotic figures permitting a tentative diagnosis of malignancy already on frozen sections. The parathyroid nature of the lesion was established ultrastructurally by demonstration of secretory granules, glycogen particles and lipid material within the cytoplasm. A patient underwent reexploration for a parathyroid adenoma; following identification of four normal glands in the cervical region, the mediastinum was entered, and an intrathymic lipoadenoma was excised. These very rare tumors have been associated with hypercalcemia in approximately half of the previously reported cases; however, none has previously been described as occurring entirely in the mediastinum.

Electron-microscopic studies were made on the parathyroid gland of cadmium-treated mice. Most chief cells in treated mice were rich in free ribosomes and secretory granules compared to the control mice. In the parathyroid gland after 3 and 4 weeks of administration of cadmium, interdigitations between adjacent chief cells became more complex than in the control mice.
