Unmarried parents in college.

Noting that access to higher education has expanded dramatically in the past several decades, Sara Goldrick-Rab and Kia Sorensen focus on how unmarried parents fare once they enter college. Contrary to the expectation that access to college consistently promotes family stability and economic security, the authors argue that deficiencies in current policy lead college attendance to have adverse consequences for some families headed by unmarried parents. Although rates of college attendance have increased substantially among unmarried parents, their college completion rates are low. One explanat

Parent abuse: a review.

A recent focus of research and clinical practice has been on the issue of abuse of parents by their children (parent abuse). This paper reviews the literature on this phenomenon. While parent abuse falls under the umbrella of family violence, it appears to be qualitatively different from other forms of intra-family abuse. Research has primarily focused on prevalence rates and the characteristics of perpetrators and victims. While various factors such as gender, age, emotional attachment to parents, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, family stress and parenting style and structure have been …

[Children, parents and anxiety.].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Preoperative pediatric anxiety is characterized by stress, worry, nervosism and concern and may be expressed in different ways. Postoperative behavior changes, such as nocturnal enuresis, dietary problems, apathy, insomnia, nightmares and agitated sleep may be results of this anxiety. In some children, these changes persist for one year. This study aimed at evaluating anxiety-related aspects affecting children and parents in the preoperative period, as well as pharmacological or non-pharmacological interventions to minimize them. Who is the parent in cloning?

In July 1996, a sheep named Dolly was born in Scotland. What makes Dolly's birth noteworthy is that she is the result of the first successful cloning attempt using the nucleus of an adult cell. The technique that led to Dolly's birth involved transferring the nucleus of a mammary cell from an adult sheep to the enucleated egg cell of an unrelated sheep with gestation occurring in a third sheep. The possibility of applying this technique to human reproduction raised concerns worldwide with several countries moving for an immediate bans on human cloning. In the United States, President Clinton r

[Parents as alcohol pushers?].

In a study of 834 adolescents, age 14-17, in the Oslo area, the relationship between parental 'alcohol pushing' and the adolescents' own drinking behaviour, was investigated. 'Alcohol pushing' defined as parents who give alcohol to children under the age of 18, was quite common. This was the case in particular in the age group 16 to 17. There were big differences, however, as regards the kind of situations when this occurred. This kind of parental behaviour was most prevalent on 'special occasions' like New Years Eve, but also occurred relatively often in situations such as 'Sunday dinner'. Th

Children of Incarcerated Parents.

Psychosocial health of children of incarcerated parents is a critical area of concern and yet acutely neglected in India. Despite Supreme court guidelines on ensuring age-appropriate care for children living along with their mothers in prison, there is variance in practice, which compounds the disadvantage of being a prisoner's child. The children left behind at home due to parental incarceration also experience vulnerabilities that emanate from their pre-existing socio-economic disadvantages, the continued interface of the child with the criminal justice system, as well as societal perception

Parental overprotection revisited.

Dimensions of parental overprotection are clarified in a critical review of the research and clinical literature. An indulgent style of parenting is distinguished from an overprotective parent-child relationship. Differential antecedents and outcomes are proposed for each of these forms of parent-child interaction. Measures of protection are reviewed. A new conceptual model of parental overprotection is presented which takes into account child, parent, family, socio-cultural, environmental and resiliency factors. Directions for future research are suggested.
